It appeared to be another typical ransomware attack that impacted the city of Columbus, Ohio, this past July. Connor Goodwolf (legal name is David Leroy Ross) is an IT consultant who plumbs the dark web as part of his job. So when word got out that the city of Columbus, his hometown, had been breached, Goodwolf did what he does: he poked around online. "Lawsuits against data security researchers are rare," said Raymond Ku, professor of law at Case Western Reserve University. Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein said during a September press conference that the case was "not about freedom of speech or whistleblowing.

Social Security recipients can expect next year's annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to be the lowest since 2021, following cooler inflation readings in July and August. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official cost-of-living adjustment for 2025 on Oct. 10. Much of the political debate about Social Security remains focused on reforming — and ultimately paring back — the entire program. But earlier this year, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania introduced the Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act, designed to increase Social Security benefits at a rate "that actually reflects the costs seniors face." "The Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act would help seniors contend with rising costs and ensure that Social Security remains a lifeline for all who need it.”

Even more interestingly, Walz told the Journal that he made a roughly $135,000 early withdrawal from a workplace retirement account last year to fund his daughter's college education. Walz is in an unusual situationFor Walz, $135,000 represents a relatively small chunk of what he can expect to earn in retirement. The Wall Street Journal estimates the Walzes' retirement savings at more than $1 million, meaning that the early withdrawal likely represented somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% of the retirement fund. Of Walz and his wife's roughly $300,000 in 2023 income, about $135,000 came from pensions or annuities. But it's especially dangerous for the majority of Americans who will have to rely heavily on their investments to fund their retirement.

Though many say they are thankful to have Social Security payments at all, they aren't enough to fill the gap. To help pay the bills, nearly 80% of retirees receive some Social Security income, per BI's calculations, and the Social Security Administration estimates that 97% of older adults will ultimately receive benefits. She told BI that her expected $2,000 monthly Social Security payments may not be enough. As pensions dissipate and only higher-earning retirees have savings, Social Security might only become more pivotal for retirees. Advertisement"I don't want to be rich, I just need to be comfortable," 62-year-old Angela Babin — who lives on her $1,100 monthly Social Security check — told BI.

While locking their credit won't solve all cybersecurity issues related to stolen Social Security numbers, it's one extra layer of protection parents can implement. Parents can take these steps proactively even if there's nothing to suggest a minor's credit has been compromised such as unexpected credit card solicitations or bills received in the minor's name. It can take some time and effort to lock a child's credit, but the outlay is minimal compared with what can be a lengthy and emotional credit restoration process. Locking a child's credit won't protect against all of these, but it's a solid step in the right direction, financial professionals said. To check to see if their child has a credit report, parents can mail a letter with their request to each of the credit bureaus.

Sakorn Sukkasemsakorn | Istock | Getty ImagesAbout 2.9 billion people may have had their personal information hacked, a new proposed class-action lawsuit alleges. If true, reports suggest all Americans may have had valuable personal information compromised — including full names, current and past addresses, Social Security numbers and information on parents, siblings and other relatives. In 2013, a Yahoo data breach may have hit all the company's accounts, or a total of 3 billion people. "Freezing your credit is the single most important thing you can do when you get a data breach notice," Lee said. While freezing your credit will limit access to your credit reports, it won't block it completely.

But the widowed 78-year-old now has to skimp on her meals because her Social Security benefits haven’t kept up with the rising costs for food, housing and health care in recent years. Social Security benefits have lost 20% of their buying power since 2010, according to a recent analysis by The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. Every January, Social Security recipients get an annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as a COLA, but the increases often don’t keep up with the actual rise in prices – hurting senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes and depend heavily on their Social Security benefits. Social Security benefits have risen by 58% between 2010 and 2024, but the cost of goods and services purchased by typical retirees jumped 73% during that time, the league said. For Albrecht, it feels like her Social Security benefits have lost more than 20% of their buying power.

In the capital Ankara, opposition parties are calling for mass deportations, and the government is calling on the Syrian regime it once sought to topple to help resolve the problem. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is now publicly seeking a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad, the man he once labeled a terrorist, to reset relations. Before the Syrian civil war, the two leaders vacationed together, but years later, after the Syrian regime brutally crushed a public revolt, Erdogan sought to oust him from office and backed local forces fighting against him. Turkish troops remain in control of a swath of Syrian territory along the Turkish border where Syrian opposition groups are sheltering. Syrian opponents denounce the Turkish President's statements for normalization with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime in the city of Idlib, Syria on July 12.

Updating your name with the credit bureaus can prevent delays in credit applications and other credit reporting errors. Hinterhaus Productions/Getty ImagesTransgender and nonbinary people can report their legal name change to credit bureaus. One of the many steps in your legal transition is to report your legal name change to all three credit bureaus — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — so it'll appear on your credit report. How to report a name change with the credit bureausBefore you update your name with the credit bureaus, you first need to update your name on your driver's license, Social Security card, and utility bills first since credit bureaus ask for copies of those documents to verify your name change request. Vance, the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, has embraced a vision to lift the American working class with policies that would break radically with Republican economic orthodoxy, and at times with former President Donald J. Trump’s own plans. Now he faces questions from left-leaning and right-leaning economists on whether it would actually work. The broad vision, laid out in the Ohio senator’s acceptance speech on Wednesday night and through interviews and detailed somewhat in the truncated Republican platform, seeks to raise wages and restore American manufacturing in two basic ways: impose across-the-board tariffs on all imports to favor American-made products, and reduce downward pressure on wages by deporting millions of undocumented immigrants and narrowing the path into the country for legal immigrants. Meantime, the Republican platform, adopted just ahead of the convention, pledges to end inflation, increase energy production, stop sending manufacturing jobs overseas, cut taxes for workers and corporations, keep the dollar the world’s reserve currency and protect the largest domestic programs, Social Security and Medicare, from any cuts.

New York CNN —An activist hacking group claimed it leaked thousands of Disney’s internal messaging channels, which included information about unreleased projects, raw images computer codes and some logins. Nullbulge, the “hacktivist group,” claimed responsibility for the breach and said they leaked a gigantic, roughly 1.2 terabytes of information from Disney’s Slack, a communications software. In an email on Monday to CNN, the group claimed it gained access through “a man with Slack access who had cookies.” The email also claimed the group was based out of Russia. The hackers said they leaked the data because making demands of Disney would be futile. “If we said ‘Hello Disney, we have all your slack data’ they would instantly lock down and try to take us out.

The pace of inflation is coming down, which continues to point to a lower Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for retirees and other beneficiaries in 2025. The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, may be 2.7% next year, according to an estimate from Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst, based on new government data released on Thursday. In 2024, Social Security beneficiaries received a 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment. To be sure, the estimate for the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2025 is subject to change. The Social Security Administration officially determines the cost-of-living adjustment by comparing the third quarter CPI-W data for that year to the third quarter of the previous year.
