Almaty, Kazakhstan CNN —Several cities around the globe have reinvented themselves in recent years, but none more successfully than Almaty. Since the collapse of the USSR, Kazakhstan’s largest city (population 2.2 million and growing) has evolved from a drab, run-of-the-mill Soviet metropolis into the urban star of Central Asia. “It’s an incredibly livable city,” says long-time American resident Dennis Keen, a historic preservation advocate and founder of Walking Almaty. Over and underground artThe Abilkhan Kasteev State Art Museum is filled with more than 20,000 works of art. Other good collections include the Ihlas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments (in a Russian-style wooden mansion built in 1908) and the ethnographic artifacts of the Almaty Museum.

FARUKH NAGAR, India — The words “Indian Fireworks” are spelled out faintly in Hindi on the disused storefront. The small factory and dozens of others in this town a couple of miles from India’s capital, New Delhi, once produced a dizzying array of fireworks. Now there are neither fireworks nor any shoppers at the abandoned workshops of Farukh Nagar, which had produced the pyrotechnics since before the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The town stands as a grim reminder of the government’s crackdown on pollution and what it deems dangerous fireworks. “No place celebrated Diwali like we did.”

Tuesday’s election results, in which Prime Minister Modi sealed a rare third term, only enhance the sense of gloom and doom for Indian Muslims like me. With the BJP back in power – albeit without the supermajority it had vowed – my only hope lies in a politically weakened Modi now. A weakened Modi shall, hopefully, translate into a more robust India and more secure minorities. In the days and months to come, things could get seriously tough for Indian Muslims. It could be the norm for the rest of India soon as the BJP tries to deny Indian Muslims the right to follow Islamic laws in civil matters, a right granted by the Indian Constitution.

Cricket Australia's concussion protocols mean that Maxwell's condition will be monitored for a few days. I think it rattled everyone to be fair once it came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game. Maxwell broke his leg in a freak accident at a birthday party in Melbourne last November and had also missed Australia's recent tour of South Africa with an ankle issue. Maxwell has been in superb form in the tournament and hit a 40-ball hundred against the Netherlands.
