CNN —A 43-year-old father was shot and killed in his home by a Las Vegas police officer last week, authorities said, after he called 911 for help. Early in the morning of November 12, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police received multiple calls about a shooting on Wine River Drive. CNN has reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police for more information about any prior incidents at Durham’s home. Durham’s shooting remains under investigation by the police department’s critical incident review team. CNN —One person was killed and several others were injured in a shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama early Sunday morning, according to the university. The person who died, who has not been named, was not a student at the university, Tuskegee University said in a news release. “Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery,” according to the university. “The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents,” Tuskegee University said. A shooting at Albany State University after homecoming game on October 19 left one dead and injured multiple others.

The longtime elected coroner in Hinds County, Mississippi, who faced withering criticism last year for burying men in pauper's graves without notifying their families, is stepping down early. Sharon Grisham-Stewart, a Democrat, announced Monday that she would retire Dec. 31, three years before the end of her current term. CNN —Suspicious packages were sent this week to election offices in more than 20 states, leading to an FBI investigation, triggering evacuations and rattling staff, according to a CNN survey of state offices and Associated Press reporting. Karen Brinson Bell, the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, told CNN that that the battleground state was also targeted this week. Officials in Kansas and New York said in statements and interviews that, after the letters were noticed, they evacuated their offices. The first ballots of the 2024 general election are heading to voters, as Alabama officials started mailing them out Wednesday. Alabama requires that voters have a reason to vote by mail, such as being absent from the county or working during Election Day. In 2022, just over 45,000 voters cast absentee ballots, accounting for roughly 3% of all the state's ballots. Officials in Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Mississippi, Oregon, and Vermont will begin sending mail ballots later this month. And Virginia voters will be the first to cast in-person ballots in significant numbers, with early in-person voting kicking off on Sept. 20.

As Hurricane Francine pushed northeast through the Gulf of Mexico, preparations were underway in Mississippi, a state with only a short coastline — but one that has been repeatedly battered by hurricanes in the past. Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency. They poured the sand into white bags, tied them up and loaded them onto pickup trucks for residents to take home. They rode out Hurricane Katrina there in 2005, but said they wouldn’t stay if another storm of that strength threatened the area. Katrina came ashore in Louisiana and Mississippi as a Category 3 hurricane, with wind gusts of more than 120 miles per hour.

The drug works in part by clearing toxic plaques in the brain called amyloid, a hallmark of Alzheimer's, according to its manufacturers. The Mayo Clinic's center, which began screening patients for Leqembi in October, has 50 to 60 patients currently taking the drug, according to Petersen. The Mayo Clinic's Alzheimer's center similarly stops dosing patients if ARIA appears on an MRI, according to Petersen. Meeks' neurologist, Dr. Wendell Helveston, said a follow-up MRI picked up one small area of bleeding in her brain that didn't cause any symptoms.

The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process is under control, after a botched overhaul over the past year that some colleges say has dented incoming classes. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has vowed that the FAFSA process is being improved after recent missteps. I want to close up [the] Department of Education, move education back to the states. In May, Cardona announced a “full-scale review” of the Federal Student Aid office that oversees FAFSA and promised “transformational changes” at the division. I’ve taken a college and career readiness class from my high school, but it all sounded really confusing,” she said.
