The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency didn’t immediately respond with comment. Maui fire commanders discussed the forecast, but “no evidence of pre-event preparedness plans by the MFD were produced,” the report said. Maui County and the state use private contractors to help fight fires with water tankers and heavy equipment. And despite the warnings, the heads of the county emergency management agency and the Maui Fire Department were off-island that day, attending conferences in Honolulu.

Donald Trump has transformed the Republican Party on all kinds of issues — trade, foreign policy, immigration. To be clear, I think most of Trump’s policies and many of his stories are quite different, bad and often false. The world has changed, their party has changed, their voting base has changed, and so they need to change. The Democratic Party has been unified the past few years, but it has been unified against Trump, against MAGA. Brian Schatz is the senior senator from Hawaii and one of the Democrats doing the most work on these issues.
