The Titan submersible plunged thousands of feet down the forbidding depths of the North Atlantic Ocean in search of the Titanic wreck site when it imploded, killing all five on board. OceanGate came under heavy scrutiny as a result of the disaster — an almost unheard-of occurrence in the submersible industry. But after the Titan didn’t return at its scheduled time, the Polar Prince contacted the Coast Guard. The suit remains ongoing, and a former OceanGate engineering director, Tony Nissen, named as a defendant, is expected to appear Monday at the Coast Guard hearing. “The Titan submersible did not just go down with its inventor — it went down with paying passengers.”

CNN —The US Coast Guard on Monday will begin a multi-day hearing to examine the loss of the Titan – the ill-fated submersible authorities said imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean in June 2023, killing all five people aboard during a dive to the wreckage of the Titanic. The public hearing will be conducted by the Marine Board of Investigation that was convened within days of the submersible’s disappearance. The MBI – the highest level of inquiry by the Coast Guard – was tasked with reviewing the cause of the tragedy and offering recommendations, including about potential civil penalties and criminal prosecution. The MBI is made up of numerous Coast Guard officials and at least two from the National Transportation Safety Board, according to a list provided by the Coast Guard. When the investigation is complete, the US Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board will each conduct an independent analysis and complete reports, Neubauer said Sunday.

If Bill Gates had to start all over again, he'd join the artificial intelligence arms race with an "AI-centric" startup, he says. Over the last year, a growing number of cinnamon products have been recalled in the U.S. due to high levels of lead. That prompted Consumer Reports to test brands such as Badia, McCormick and Morton & Bassett, along with smaller brands, across 17 mainstream and niche grocery stores. It found high levels of lead in 12 products, with levels reaching 3.5 parts per million. Paras cinnamon powder had the most lead, according to Consumer Reports, containing 3.52 ppm. The FDA has wound down some of its response efforts to its cinnamon applesauce investigation but will continue to monitor other products in stores for high lead levels.

All legislation must also be passed by the Senate before it can be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. It is unclear how many of the measures will make it that far given the limited number of days the Senate is in session for the rest of the year. But their success in the House could pave the way for even stronger regulatory moves in the next Congress, Singleton said. The Chinese companies, whose work includes cancer research and manufacturing for American drugmakers, say data privacy is not at risk and that the measure will limit competition. “We are disappointed that the U.S. legislative process is being used to pick winners and losers,” Shenzhen-based BGI Group said in a statement.

CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. A Delaware judge agreed to send another 2020 election defamation case to trial Thursday, ruling that the Newsmax Media published false claims saying Smartmatic voting machines rigged the 2020 election. Florida-based voting machine company Smartmatic, alleging defamation, sued Newsmax Media, also based in Florida, in 2021, arguing that the network claimed its devices rigged the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly claimed that the 2020 election was rigged. But in wins for Smartmatic, he ruled firmly that the rigged election claims were definitely false, published by Newsmax and specific to Smartmatic. Smartmatic's case is quite different, in large part because the voting machine company was used only in Los Angeles during the 2020 election.

Aid workers reached more than 90% of targeted vaccine coverage in the first phase of the UN-led campaign, according to the UN’s agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA. Israel’s offensive in Gaza, launched after the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, has precipitated a humanitarian crisis and flattened critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, Israeli aid restrictions have severely depleted fuel stocks, chlorine and spare parts, stifling water production, purification and sewage pumping, according to the agency. Then in August, an 11-month old boy became the first person in Gaza in 25 years to be diagnosed with polio. Relief workers described repeated challenges to the campaign rollout – especially in northern Gaza – citing Israeli evacuation orders, roads damaged by bombardment, increased hostilities and scant fuel supplies.

On Thursday, another near-miss was added to the list when an Alaska Airlines plane and a Southwest plane nearly collided in Nashville. In some cases, hero pilots such as Bradeen and Carvajal have kept collision courses from turning deadly. In it, she speaks to key figures of the tech industry, including Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, about the impacts of AI. London CNN —OpenAI has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model that it says can “reason” and solve harder problems in science, coding and math than its predecessors. The model, the first in a series called OpenAI o1, was released Thursday as a preview, with the firm saying it expects regular updates and improvements. “We trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would,” the maker of ChatGPT said on its website. The new OpenAI model doesn’t yet have many of the features “that make ChatGPT useful,” the firm said, like browsing the web for information, and uploading files and images. In tests, OpenAI o1 performs similarly to PhD students on difficult benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry and biology, according to the company.

Many mental health advocates worry whether the Georgia community will receive the mental health support it is likely to need in the wake of the shooting. Andy Miller for KFF Health NewsSo health providers worry that in the coming days, months, and years the community will struggle to find help for their mental health needs. Georgia ranks nearly last among states in access to mental health care resources, according to Mental Health America, a nonprofit that advocates for increased mental health spending. The lack of mental health care remained a top concern in the region during a follow-up assessment in 2022. But immediately following the shooting, mental health providers across the region still had to cobble together free resources for area residents.
