In a closed-door Democratic caucus meeting, the secret-ballot vote was 131 to 84, according to a lawmaker in the room. After the vote, Connolly told reporters the most "capable" candidate won. "Again, I think my colleagues were measuring their votes by who's got experience, who's seasoned, who can be trusted, who's capable, and who's got a record of productivity. The full Democratic caucus also ratified other steering panel recommendations on Tuesday. For the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, the steering committee recommended Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., over the more junior Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M.

The position opened up after the top Democrat on Oversight, Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., challenged Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., for a similar post on the Judiciary Committee, prompting Nadler to bow out. In an upset, the Steering panel on Monday recommended Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota to be the top Democrat of the Agriculture Committee. For the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, the Steering panel recommended senior Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., over more junior Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M. The full Democratic Caucus is expected to vote on the Steering panel's recommendations Tuesday morning. While the caucus typically adopts the committee's recommendations, there have been instances where the full caucus overruled the panel's votes and picked someone else.

When he began teaching behavioral finance at the Claremont Colleges, Amos Nadler decided he needed some hands-on experience to discuss with his students. I needed to talk about gains and losses," Nadler, the founder of Prof of Wall Street and a Ph.D. in behavioral finance and neuroeconomics, tells CNBC Make It. As of market close on Dec 11, Nvidia shares were going for $139.31 apiece. "That amount of money is enough to buy a nice house somewhere," Nadler said in a discussion with fellow behavioral finance expert George Dan. "The classic behavioral finance reason is risk aversion," he says, which manifested as fear that his soaring stock pick would soon plummet back to Earth.

“If she wins, it’s the end of seniority,” said a House Democrat who has served decades in Congress. Some powerful committee leaders have already stepped aside amid challenges from relatively younger upstarts. For Democrats, seniority has long played an outsized role in determining whom rank-and-file members selected as their committee leaders. So the once-small CBC prioritized seniority to help some of its members secure committee gavels and ranking member slots. 'It takes experience to do things well'Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., 68, another CBC member, said she takes no issue with younger members’ challenging senior colleagues.

The White House said Tuesday that Biden would veto the bill – passed unanimously by the Senate this summer and set for a House vote this week – that would add judgeships to the most overburdened federal courthouses in the country. Judges across the ideological spectrum have warned that staffing shortages have created a major backlog in cases. Democrats are now pointing to House GOP leadership’s failure to do so as reason why they’re reversing their support. Judges – including in interviews with CNN – have said that the judiciary faces a staffing crisis that is undermining litigants’ right to speedy justice. Lawmakers may try to get the bill passed in the new Congress, but getting Democratic support may require delaying the first allocation of new judges until 2029, when White House control will be unknown.

A third Democratic lawmaker reported being told this week by Ocasio-Cortez, 35, that she was definitely running. The contest will serve as a gauge of whether the Democratic caucus still values seniority or truly wants generational change. “AOC is very collaborative on the committee and helps lift up all members,” Khanna said in a brief interview. The Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which is closely aligned with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., is planning to make recommendations for committee leaders later this month. After that, all 215 House Democrats who will serve in the new Congress will vote on who they want as their committee leaders for the 119th Congress.

WASHINGTON — Longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., said Wednesday he was dropping his bid to remain the top Democrat on the powerful Judiciary Committee for the next two years and endorsed Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who announced just two days ago he would challenge Nadler for the coveted job. “Therefore, I have decided not to run for Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee in the 119th Congress.”Nadler has held the top job on the Judiciary panel since 2019 and has served in Congress since 1992. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., had challenged Nadler for the Judiciary post. Raskin, a former constitutional law professor, was elected to Congress in 2016 and has served as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee for the past two years. His move to Judiciary opens up the race to lead Oversight; Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., has already announced a bid for that job, while other Oversight members, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., are testing the waters.

Donald Trump could use Joe Biden’s pardon of Hunter Biden for his own gain, some worry. Hunter Biden pardon gives Trump political coverPresident Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden was a move by a father to protect his son that some lawmakers said they could understand. “I’ll put it this way — if it was my son, I’d pardon him too,” Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville said. What hasn’t resonated as widely is Biden’s stated reason for pardoning Hunter Biden. WASHINGTON — Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., a former constitutional law professor who served as Democrats’ lead prosecutor in the Trump impeachment trial after the Jan. 6 attack, told colleagues Monday he will challenge Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., for the top Democratic spot on the powerful Judiciary Committee. Nadler, 77, has held the top job on the Judiciary panel since 2019, served in Congress since 1992 and has suffered some health scares in recent years. In his three-page letter, Raskin, the current ranking member of the Oversight Committee, also offered praise for Nadler, who is running for his fourth term leading Democrats on the Judiciary panel. CNN —House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is facing his first big leadership test in the new Trump era as congressional Democrats push for a shakeup in their party’s approach to countering the incoming president. A number of Democrats who were once willing to wait their turn on the leadership ladder have suddenly lost their patience. Two other Democrats are vying to replace Rep. David Scott, who is 79, at the House Agriculture Committee. Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, whose longshot primary challenge to Biden quickly failed, praised his colleagues for taking on committee leadership. Throughout the impeachment investigation, Jeffries appeared to defer to committee Democrats at every turn and only got involved when needed.

The debate has grown most intense in recent days as dozens of Democrats have been privately pressing Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland to challenge Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York for his position as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. They are doing so out of concern that Mr. Nadler will be ineffective in pushing back against any efforts by Mr. Trump to abuse his power. Mr. Nadler, 77, the dean of New York’s congressional delegation, has made it clear he has no plans to step aside. And while Mr. Raskin, 61, is mulling a challenge, he has not yet decided whether to pursue one, according to colleagues familiar with his thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter. “As a New Yorker, I have stood up to Donald Trump my entire career,” Mr. Nadler wrote in a letter to colleagues announcing his run for re-election to the post, in which he emphasized his history of going after Mr. Trump.

As federal investigations swirled around Eric Adams over the past year, the New York City mayor stuck to a familiar script. In one instance, an unidentified Adams staffer agreed to an interview with FBI agents. In March 2019, an Adams staffer was exchanging text messages with the then-Brooklyn borough president about another possible trip to Turkey. “To be o[n the] safe side Please Delete all messages you send me,” the staffer wrote Adams, according to the indictment. What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.

The case for a Biden comeback always presumed that voters would mostly cast their ballots based on their views about Donald J. Trump. So long as that’s true, the path to a Biden comeback will be long and arduous. The best that can be said for Mr. Biden is that the worst of the post-debate crisis might — might — be over. Even skeptics like Jerry Nadler, who had reportedly told his colleagues that Mr. Biden should end his candidacy, appeared newly resigned to Mr. Biden’s renomination. And all of this follows a steady stream of Democrats who affirmed their support for Mr. Biden on Monday, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

But the president’s abject debate performance and defiance in the aftermath have badly weakened his standing in a party already unenthusiastic about his campaign. Any slip ups or confusion would rip off the fragile patch Biden has fixed on the dam of Democratic Party support. Biden needs one of his classic comebacks more than everStill, it’s too early to count Biden out. “We concluded that Joe Biden is old; we found out, and the polling came back that he’s old,” Fetterman told CNN. Many of the CBC’s members are in solid blue districts and may be under less pressure than frontline Democrats who have criticized the president’s debate performance.

President Joe Biden arrives to speak to supporters and volunteers during a campaign stop at a Biden-Harris campaign election office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 7, 2024. President Joe Biden defended his place at the top of the Democratic ticket Monday in a surprise television interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," after more lawmakers and donors came forward over the weekend with concerns about his reelection bid. "I'm getting so frustrated by the elites in the party" calling on him to step down, the president fumed. Biden insisted to hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that the concerns of his wealthy backers would not dictate his political future. More than a handful of top House Democrats told Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday that Biden needs to step aside amid concerns about down-ballot Democratic races. President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats increasingly appear to be on a collision course. Reporters are going to be asking any Democratic lawmaker in sight whether they believe Biden should remain their party's nominee against former President Donald Trump. As of Monday morning, five House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to step aside, while two have pointedly said that he can't win. AdvertisementAll of this makes the week ahead extremely important for Biden and the Democratic Party. The worst possible outcome for Biden is that a public consensus emerges among congressional Democrats that he must go, and that party leaders follow suit by issuing calls for him to drop out.

Some House Democrats in battleground districts are weighing whether to distance themselves from Biden. "President Biden is a good man & I appreciate his lifetime of service," she wrote in a post to X.
