A Spirit Airlines flight to Haiti was hit by gunfire on Monday, injuring a flight attendant, as the State Department warned of "gang-led efforts" to stop travel to the country. Here’s what I remember most about my childhood growing up under a dictatorship in Haiti: fear. My classmates, the children of regime officials, were dropped off at school by big men with guns. Sometimes we would walk by the National Palace and avert our eyes, too afraid to even look onto the grounds. Haitians deserve better. In many cases, nonessential personnel can include the families of diplomats, but the embassy had already ordered departure for nonessential staff and all family members in July. The personnel ferried out of the embassy may have simply been rotating out, to be refreshed by new staff.

CNN —Intruders broke into a major port terminal in Haiti Thursday as violence in the country escalated after the government extended its state of emergency. It comes as Port-au-Prince’s Caribbean Port Services (CPS) terminal, a major player in Haiti’s food import supply chain, was broken into around 8 a.m., two security sources told CNN. Haiti’s security crisis is reaching a breaking point. An alliance of armed gangs is pressing the country’s prime minister to resign, placing the United States in the middle of a power struggle gripping the country. Aiming to ease the standoff, the Biden administration is increasing pressure on Prime Minister Ariel Henry to enable a transfer of power. The United States was not actively “calling on him or pushing for him to resign,” Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the State Department, said. The standoff emerged after Mr. Henry, who has been backed by the United States since becoming Haiti’s de facto leader after the assassination in 2021 of President Jovenel Moïse, was unable to return to Haiti on Tuesday because of doubts over safely landing at the airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince, which has been targeted in recent days by gang assaults.

CNN —Heavy gunfire has forced flight cancellations at Haiti’s main airport and killed at least four at a police station, as the Caribbean nation grapples with surging gang violence and political instability. Haiti has been gripped by a wave of unrest and gang violence in recent years. A powerful Haitian gang leader said gun fights that broke out across Port-au-Prince on Thursday were aimed at overthrowing Henry’s government, multiple media outlets reported. An attack on Bon Repos Police Station, north of Port-au-Prince, on Thursday left at least four people dead and three wounded, a security source told CNN. The security mission, authorized by the UN, has been seen by the international community as key to contain a full-blow fallout in Haiti.

CNN —The wife of Haiti’s former President Jovenel Moïse, Martine Moïse, and the former prime minister Claude Joseph are among 51 people who have been indicted over the assassination of the former president, according to a 122-page document from the judge presiding over the investigation. Mrs. Moïse was also shot multiple times but survived. The judge called for the arrest and trials of those charged. Haiti's former prime minister Claude Joseph in Port-au-Prince in July 2021. The prime minister has no direct relationship with the examining magistrate, nor does he control him.
