In this 2004 photo, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris waits for a proceeding to convene in San Francisco. The long-standing problem of racial inequities in the criminal justice system is among the issues that prompted Harris to become a prosecutor in the first place. “I grew up knowing about the disparities, inequities, and unfairness in the criminal justice system,” Harris said during a 2019 town hall hosted by MSNBC. And I am proud of the work that I did.”As a prosecutor, Harris adopted what she called a “smart on crime” approach to law enforcement. Her cautious stance on the issue frustrated many advocates of criminal justice reform, including those who expressed support for Harris on other issues.

I thought I was ready for my son to go to kindergarten, as I've done this before. But the morning I walked my son to the open double doors of his new school and hugged him goodbye, it felt different. The decision to blow open five tank cars and burn the toxic chemical inside them after a freight train derailed in Eastern Ohio last year wasn't justified, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board told Congress Wednesday. “There was another option: let it cool down.”However, that information was never relayed to Ohio Gov. But the agency won't release its final report on what caused the Feb. 3, 2023, derailment until it holds another hearing this June. "The successful controlled release prevented a potentially catastrophic uncontrolled explosion.”Krissy Ferguson, 49, has not been able to return home since the derailment. Gavin Newsom said he will not sign a proposed ban on tackle football for children under 12, ending advocates' short-lived hopes of having the bill become law this year. “I will not sign legislation that bans youth tackle football,” Newsom said in a statement late Tuesday. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesThe proposal to ban youth tackle football gained momentum this year amid increasing concern about concussions along with the rise in popularity of flag football. The goal was to have kids play flag football until age 12, which would give athletes about three years of playing tackle football before entering high school. “We collectively look forward to working with you and the California legislative body to drive the California Youth Football Act as the most comprehensive youth tackle football safety measure in the country,” White said.

(AP) — Regulators on Thursday gave the go-ahead for a multistate wind-energy power line to provide the equivalent of four nuclear power plants' worth of energy to Missouri consumers. At issue is the Grain Belt Express, a power line that will carry wind energy from Kansas across Missouri and Illinois before hooking into a power grid in Indiana that serves eastern states. Under the new plan, approved 4-1 by Missouri's Public Service Commission, Grain Belt Express plans to bring as much as 2,500 megawatts of power to Missouri. Previously, state utility regulators approved a line that would have brought only 500 megawatts of energy to the state. The project will help unlock $7.5 billion in energy cost savings in Missouri and Illinois, according to its developers.

A family businessThis picture shows Illinois Senator Dave Koehler with teenager Shreya Nallamothu, who helped inspire new legislation protecting child influencers. Although children are predominantly featured in these monetized videos, parents have had no legal obligation to give them any portion of the earnings. “But we know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetize kids being on videos. That California law required parents to set aside a portion of 15% of child earnings in a blocked trust account that the child actor could access after the age of 18. “Even though Illinois is the first state to pass such a law, this legislation is a long time coming,” Maddox said.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management has set aside areas for free camping in national forests, national grasslands and BLM-managed lands.

WASHINGTON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - An expected showdown between President Joe Biden's Democrats and a newly minted Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives over the debt ceiling is threatening to push Washington to the brink of a debt crisis. WHAT'S THE DEBT CEILING? IS THE DEBT CEILING GOOD FOR ANYTHING? Others argue the debt ceiling itself violates the U.S. Constitution. In a 2011 showdown, House Republicans successfully used the debt ceiling to extract sharp limits on discretionary spending from Democratic President Barack Obama.
TikToker Rory McCarty helped raise more than $100,000 so an 82-year-old Walmart employee could retire. Butch Marion, of Cumberland, Maryland, was finally able to retire after receiving a check for $108,682 in online donations from GoFundMe. His initial post introducing Marion, shared on Dec. 16, garnered more than 3.3 million views. McCarty wrote on the GoFundMe page that he was inspired after seeing a video of a fellow TikToker raising money for another older Walmart employee who wasn't financially able to retire. "I wanted to help this navy veteran to live the remainder of his years traveling to see his kids in Florida," McCarty wrote on GoFundMe.
The last time the House failed to elect a speaker on the first ballot was in 1923, during a contest that took nine ballots to resolve. Possibilities include number two House Republican Steve Scalise and Representative Jim Jordan - who received 20 votes when nominated on Tuesday. But House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters that Republicans have not reached out to discuss that option. Well, I am not going to surrender," Republican Representative Trent Kelly said at a news conference on Wednesday evening. Wednesday's three failed votes - following three failed votes on Tuesday - also served as a rebuke to Trump, who had urged Republicans to unite behind McCarthy.
Matt Gaetz criticized Kevin McCarthy who is seeking to become House speaker. The vote to elect a House speaker takes place on Tuesday. "If you want to drain the swamp, you cannot put the biggest alligator in charge of the exercise," Gaetz said. "We offered Kevin McCarthy terms last evening that he rejected," Gaetz said, adding that those opposed to McCarthy's bid also "struggle" with trusting him. If Republicans continue their protest against McCarthy, it could take hours, days, or even weeks until a speaker is chosen.
