The hearing which will decide whether Manchester City broke 115* of the Premier League’s financial rules begins today (Monday) in London. It has been a long time coming — over 18 months since the Premier League announced its investigation had escalated into charges in February 2023. This is The Athletic’s guide to the 115* alleged charges (yes, we will explain the asterisk). AdvertisementIf the commission finds on “the balance of probabilities” that this was not the case, City will be found guilty. Should the Premier League rules be shown to be unlawful, their argument that City have broken those rules is significantly weakened.

This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. None of the lingering questions over this England team have been solved.

CNN —Reigning champion Italy was knocked out of Euro 2024 in the last 16 after Switzerland produced a stunning upset to win 2-0 on Saturday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Swiss supporters didn’t have to wait long after the break for a second goal – only 27 seconds to be exact. Italy’s continued sloppiness on the ball carried over into the second half, immediately giving the ball away from it’s own kickoff. While Switzerland deservedly advanced, it was an uncharacteristically out-of-sorts performance for Italy, who’s defense of its title ends in the first knockout game of the tournament. Italy’s defeat means that the reigning champion has been eliminated in the round of 16 at the last three Euros.

CNN —Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable season took another extraordinary turn on Thursday as a late 2-2 draw against AS Roma stretched the club’s unbeaten run to 49 games. The 4-2 aggregate victory saw Leverkusen reach a first European final in 22 years, while Josip Stanišić’s 97th-minute strike ensured that the recently-crowned German champion remains undefeated this season. It means that Leverkusen has now surpassed Portuguese team Benfica’s record from 1963-65 for the longest unbeaten run across all top-level matches since the introduction of European competitions, according to UEFA. “It says a lot about the team, the conviction that we have and it’s great to finally reach the final. According to UEFA, Scottish side Celtic’s unbeaten run of 62 games between 1915 and 1917 is the outright record for a European club, although that only included domestic league matches.

Gold, typically seen as a haven in periods of economic turmoil, especially as a hedge against inflation, has risen sharply in price over the past month, even as the outlook for the economy has improved and inflation, although still elevated, is well below recent highs. The precious metal has set a series of record highs as it surged roughly $300, to $2,350 per troy ounce, since the start of March. The move has been attributed, at least in part, to a burst of gold buying from central banks around the world, including China. But investors said that central bank purchases did not fully explain such a sudden price increase. “It’s perplexing to anybody in the gold market,” said Chris Mancini, a gold portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds.

By Nandita BoseWASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will spotlight Republican curbs on abortion rights this week, a galvanizing issue for Democrats that they hope will boost enthusiasm among their base, attract independent voters, and increase turnout in November. The Biden campaign is putting abortion rights front and center in 2024, and argues abortion access is a personal freedom that former President Donald Trump and Republicans are denying women. Democrats hope a threat of further curbs on abortion will bring voters to the polls in November. All seven statewide ballot initiatives to enshrine reproductive rights since 2022 have succeeded, including in conservative Ohio, Kansas and Kentucky. Abortion rights groups are collecting signatures in Arizona, Nevada and Florida to put a reproductive rights amendment on the ballot in 2024 as well.

Last year, anti-abortion activists descended on the National Mall in triumph for the annual March for Life, eager to enter a new era for their ambitions to end abortion following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that established federal abortion rights. But this year, the first presidential election year in post-Roe America, the movement finds itself marching once more in Washington not in triumph, exactly, but grasping to advance their cause after a series of political defeats, fewer powerful allies, and setbacks in the court of public opinion. “We are experiencing the reverberations of that massive historic shift,” said Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life. “We certainly do have our work cut out for us, but that’s why we started.”The end of Roe has greatly shifted the political calculus. Abortion rights have proven to be a mobilizing force for a new coalition of Democrats, independent voters and even some moderate Republicans.

“We have undeniable evidence of victory — lives being saved,” said John Seago, president of Texas Right to Life. For abortion-rights activists, Cox’s case was a powerful illustration of how abortion bans could be dangerous for women with pregnancy complications. Over and over, people talked about her with awe, her courage in going public.”Seago, the Texas Right to Life president, defended Texas’ abortion ban. Among leading anti-abortion activists, there’s a general consensus that women should not be prosecuted for seeking or obtaining an abortion. Conversely, some abortion opponents — including Chris Smith — fear a Democratic sweep might lead to a law overriding the state abortion bans that are now in effect.

LEVERKUSEN, Germany, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Italy qualified for Euro 2024 after drawing 0-0 against Ukraine in their final Group C qualifier on Monday although the Ukrainians can still secure a spot through the playoffs. European champions Italy finished second, level on 14 points with third-placed Ukraine but with a better head-to-head record after a tense affair that could have gone either way. The Italians ended six points behind England, who had sealed qualification after beating Italy 3-1 at Wembley in October. "Ukraine showed that they are an equipped team and they gave us a hard time," Italy coach Luciano Spalletti told Rai Sport. Defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo then nearly nodded home for Italy from a corner just before the half-hour mark before Trubin pulled off a stunning save to deny Davide Frattesi.

There are a slew of users and uses that compete for curb space. The solution, some advocates say, is removing free parking and charging for spots based on demand. Free parkingThe root of the chaos at the curb stems from free on-street parking, critics say. Cities “squander curbs for free parking for cars because drivers are the people who show up at public meetings,” Shoup said. Smart loading zonesEven if cities managed their on-street parking problems for private vehicles more effectively, bikers, delivery workers, outdoor dining and other uses would still crowd the curb.

CNN —England came back to beat Italy on Tuesday to book its spot at Euro 2024 and leave the reigning champion’s hopes of qualifying hanging by a thread. The result enacted a modicum of revenge for England, which lost to Italy in the same stadium in the Euro 2020 final two years ago. However, the defeat leaves Italy’s hopes of qualifying in the balance with the Azzurri on 10 points after six games, three points behind Ukraine which has 13 points after seven games. For a four-time world champion and the reigning European champion, not making it to Germany would signal another major failure. Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti said he thought his side didn’t deserve Tuesday’s result with the way it played.

Italy remain third in the group level on four points with fourth-placed North Macedonia although the Italians have only played three games to their opponents' four. Aug 27 (Reuters) - Former Italy boss Roberto Mancini said he aims to make history after being named the new head coach of the Saudi Arabia national team by the country's football federation (SAFF) on Sunday. "I made history in Europe, now is time to make history with Saudi," Mancini said in a video posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Former Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti replaced Mancini as Italy boss after he resigned on Aug. 13, ending a five-year spell in charge of the national team in which they won the European Championship but missed out on qualification for the World Cup.
