CNN —The US men’s national soccer team (USMNT) booked its place in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals next year with a thrilling 4-2 win over Jamaica in St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday night. The victory secured a 5-2 aggregate win over the Reggae Boyz after a hard fought first leg in Jamaica finished 1-0 to the US last week. Mauricio Pochettino’s side opened up a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to Christian Pulisic’s brace and Ricardo Pepi’s low strike from outside the box. The 32-year-old was introduced as a substitute in the 77th minute of the team’s 5-4 AFC Champions League Elite win against Al Ain on Monday. “I’m so happy,” the Brazilian said to Al-Hilal’s media department following his return on Monday. Emirates Stadium CNN —It wasn’t pretty and at times it wasn’t pleasant, but Arsenal got the job done in the Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. After Riznyk saved Leandro Trossard’s second-half penalty, Shakhtar went in search of a late equaliser but a combination of poor final passes and resolute Arsenal defending mean it leaves north London empty handed. The home fans responded to Arsenal’s positive start, as the first chants of “Arsenal, Arsenal,” echoed around the Emirates. After successfully riding the early waves of Arsenal attacks, Shakhtar grew into the game and started to look like a threat on the counterattack. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya had to get down smartly to save Pedrinho’s long-range shot, but that was the closest Shakhtar came to snatching a point.

CNN —Thomas Tuchel has been announced by the English FA as the next head coach of the England men’s football team, three months after Gareth Southgate resigned from the role. This will be Tuchel’s first appointment in international football. He has previously taken charge of Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League side Chelsea, guiding the Blues to the UEFA Champions League title in 2021, before managing Bayern Munich in Germany. Despite high expectations, England finished runner-up at back-to-back European Championships under Southgate, while also reaching the semifinals and quarterfinals of the past two World Cups. Tuchel will be tasked with guiding England to the next World Cup in 2026, jointly hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, with hopes of winning the men’s team its first major international title in 60 years.

CNN —The long-awaited official hire of former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino as the new head coach of the US men’s national soccer team (USMNT) has finally come to fruition. Pochettino represents a significant get for the US and will bring a wealth of top-level coaching experience to the team. Pochettino has also notably been the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain, where he led PSG to a Ligue 1 title. Pochettino joins the US after previous head coach Gregg Berhalter was fired following a disappointing Copa América exit in July. Expectations were high for France going into the men’s gold medal match, but the reality of the first half was brutal for Thierry Henry’s side.
