Washington CNN —A six-month House GOP government funding plan cleared a key hurdle on Tuesday, but remains at risk of failing as Speaker Mike Johnson attempts to navigate a shutdown fight with his narrow majority. The House voted 209-206 to approve a rule to govern debate for the funding plan, which includes a controversial measure that targets noncitizen voting. But at least six House Republicans have come out against the funding bill, which is enough to sink it in the House amid Democratic opposition, and the bill is considered dead-on-arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would extend government funding until March 2025. Many House conservatives are also generally opposed to short-term funding bills, arguing instead in favor of spending cuts.

SAF has a lower carbon footprint than traditional jet fuel because it’s made from waste products, where the carbon has already been emitted; or from plants that absorb CO2 as they grow. That was much higher than the 5% reduction target in international aviation emissions by 2030 agreed by 193 countries at a United Nations-backed conference last November. The aviation industry accounted for 2% of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). “Planned production capacity for sustainable aviation fuels will provide just a small fraction of jet fuel demand by 2027,” notes the IEA on its website.

Former President Donald Trump claimed that the United States has given more in aid to Ukraine than European countries put together. “The European nations together have spent $100 billion, or maybe more than that, less than us,” Trump said. From just before Russia’s invasion in early 2022 through April 2024, European countries contributed more aid to Ukraine than the US, according to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany. Additionally, Europe had committed more total military aid to Ukraine, at about $76 billion to about $69 billion for the US. And the Kiel Institute found that Ukraine itself was getting only about half of the money in a 2024 US bill that had widely been described as a $61 billion aid bill for Ukraine.

But an Air New Zealand plane had a very different reason for making an unplanned stop yesterday – they were picking up the country’s prime minister after his government aircraft broke down. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and a group of prominent business leaders were en route to Tokyo for a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. They were traveling on a Royal New Zealand Defense Force plane, which stopped in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea to refuel. Mitt Romney said that if he were President Joe Biden he would have “immediately pardoned” former President Donald Trump. “Had I been President Biden, when the Justice Department brought on indictments, I would have immediately pardoned him,” Romney told MSNBC’s “The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle” in an interview set to air Wednesday. “I’d have pardoned President Trump. Washington CNN —The House voted swiftly Wednesday evening to kill Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson from his leadership post. Johnson spoke briefly with reporters following the vote, calling Greene’s campaign against him “misguided” and thanking colleagues for a “show of confidence” in his leadership.
