More younger women are getting breast cancer, and doctors are scrambling to understand why. While having a baby may temporarily increase a woman’s breast cancer risk, it slightly lowers long-term risk, said Dr. Ann Partridge, co-founder and director of the Program for Young Adults with Breast Cancer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. What’s known about breast cancer in younger womenDoctors are still scratching the surface in researching why breast cancer is becoming more prevalent at a younger age. They’re not breastfeeding as much, which does increase breast cancer risk. That would indicate that obesity likely isn’t much of a factor in the rising rates of breast cancer among younger women, said Toriola, of Washington University.

CNN —An immunotherapy approach to treating advanced Hodgkin lymphoma may drastically increase patients’ chances of survival, including those as young as 12, according to a new clinical trial. “The standard endpoint in studies of Hodgkin lymphoma is progression-free survival, because we think that best predicts the future,” he said. Hodgkin lymphoma can develop at any age, but it’s most common in early adulthood. ‘An immunotherapy revolution’The new study included nearly 1,000 people who were at least 12 years old and newly diagnosed with stage III or IV Hodgkin lymphoma that had previously been untreated. “However, insights in the field of cancer biology identified other potential approaches to cancer treatment in general and Hodgkin’s lymphoma in particular.

Former film producer Harvey Weinstein appears in court in New York, U.S., September 18, 2024. Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a new sex crime charge in New York, as he awaits retrial in his landmark #MeToo case. Prosecutors revealed last week that Weinstein had been indicted on additional sex crime charges that weren't part of the case that led to his now-overturned 2020 conviction. While bracing for the new charges, Weinstein also is awaiting retrial after New York state's highest court this spring overturned his 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges involving two women. Weinstein, who also was convicted in 2022 in a Los Angeles rape case, remains behind bars while awaiting his New York retrial.

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul whose alleged sexual misconduct fueled the #MeToo movement, has been indicted on new charges by a New York City grand jury, Manhattan prosecutors announced during a court hearing Thursday. The new indictment is under seal, prosecutor Nicole Blumberg told Judge Curtis Farber, who has set a trial date for Nov. 12. NBC News was the first to report this month that a grand jury had been convened to hear from women who had come forward with new accusations against Weinstein, 72. Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of third-degree rape of one woman and first-degree criminal sex act against another woman after a trial in New York, where he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. New York prosecutors announced months later that they intended to recharge Weinstein for the same crimes and possibly bring forward new charges.

CNN —Four days after a faulty software update from a cybersecurity company unexpectedly brought down computers and technical systems across the world, airlines and some other companies are still experiencing delays and other technical problems. The outage was related to a software update rolled out by CrowdStrike, a major US cybersecurity firm. The issue is specific to Falcon, one of CrowdStrike’s main software products, and is not impacting Mac or Linux operating systems, according to the advisory. US-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. More than 1,200 Delta flights were canceled on Sunday, after the carrier canceled 1,208 flights on Saturday, according to FlightAware.

Manhattan prosecutors on Tuesday said they were “actively pursuing” additional allegations of sexual assault against the disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein ahead of a new trial that was likely to begin in the fall. Nicole Blumberg, an assistant district attorney, said in Manhattan criminal court that her office had identified allegations of rape and sexual assault against Mr. Weinstein that had occurred within the statute of limitations, and that prosecutors planned to ask a grand jury to indict him. She said they were working in a “trauma-informed” manner with his accusers. “In 2020, there were women who were not ready to proceed with the legal process,” she said. “Some of those women are now ready to proceed.”When the judge in the case, Justice Curtis Farber, pressed for a date when a grand jury could hear new charges, Ms. Blumberg could not give one, but she said prosecutors could be prepared to go to trial by the fall, at one point indicating November.

NEW YORK CNN —A Manhattan prosecutor said Wednesday a new indictment against Harvey Weinstein is possible as additional accusers have come forward with claims against the powerful Hollywood producer whose downfall became a symbol of the #MeToo movement. That trial similarly used “prior bad acts” witnesses and has also been appealed. In addition, three other women testified at trial as “prior bad acts” witnesses. They argued the “prior bad acts” witnesses should not have been allowed to testify and the court should not have given prosecutors the ability to question Weinstein about instances of verbal abuse and bullying on cross-examination. In sexual assault cases, their testimony can turn a difficult “he said, she said” case into a more convincing “he said, they said” case.

As a medical oncologist, I am heartbroken — but hardly surprised. In fact, it is part of a rising global trend in which newly diagnosed cancer patients are getting younger. The global incidence of early-onset cancer increased by 79.1% and early-onset cancer deaths rose by 27.7% from 1990 to 2019, a 2023 study in the journal BMJ Oncology found. And because early-onset cancers are often diagnosed at advanced stages, they were once thought to be biologically different and more pernicious than their older counterparts. NEW YORK (AP) — New York prosecutors abruptly dropped their criminal case midtrial Wednesday against three men who had been accused of conspiring to possess a cache of hand-drafted lyrics to “Hotel California” and other Eagles hits. The raft of communications emerged only when Eagles star Don Henley apparently decided last week to waive attorney-client privilege, after he and other prosecution witnesses had already testified. “Witnesses and their lawyers” used attorney-client privilege “to obfuscate and hide information that they believed would be damaging," Judge Curtis Farber said in dismissing the case. Through their lawyers, the men contended that they were rightful owners of pages that weren't stolen by anyone. In a letter to the court, Ginandes, the prosecutor, said the waiver of attorney-client privilege resulted in the belated production of about 6,000 pages of material.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday it was trying to reach Nasser Hospital, after the Israeli raid. The Gaza Health Ministry said earlier this week that there were 10,000 people sheltering at the hospital but many had left because they feared the Israeli raid was imminent. Gaza's health authorities said Israel had forced out dozens of staff, patients, displaced people and families of medical staff sheltering in the Nasser hospital. The Gaza health ministry said Israeli forces inside Nasser Hospital forced women and children to go into the maternity department, which it had turned into a military area.
