"I just thought [Too Good To Go] was the most genius app, and I loved the concept," she says. "[Food waste] a massive, massive issue, and it's important that we solve it fast," Lykke says. Conviction to stay the courseToo Good To Go, which has nearly $158 million in investment funding, isn't the only for-profit company trying reduce food waste. Some app users like Niles, the dumpster diver in Brooklyn, worry that Too Good To Go "greenwashes" the issue of food waste, giving users false impressions of environmental responsibility. But if every food retailer in the U.S. used a similar markdown mechanism, they'd save one million tons of food annually, according to calculations by Chicago-based nonprofit ReFED.

In an instant, the impacts of her state’s restrictive laws on abortion care became clear: Had Bell been bleeding from a car accident or a burst appendix, doctors could help her right away. But because she was having a miscarriage in a hospital in Georgia, surgery had to wait. Several others restrict it to certain points in pregnancy, including Georgia, which limits abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy. Bell’s pregnancy was at 18 weeks — too early for her fetus to survive outside the womb but well past Georgia’s limit. Doctors told Bell she’d have to wait, unless her condition grew worse: Georgia makes people wait 24 hours before they can have an abortion except in medical emergencies.

— A Washington state man who pleaded guilty to killing at least 118 eagles as part of a wildlife trafficking ring that operated on a Native American Reservation in Montana faces sentencing Thursday before a federal judge. The trafficking ring sold eagle feathers and parts on a black market that exploits high demand among tribal members who use them in powwows and other ceremonies. The defendant and others killed at least 107 hawks and as many as 3,600 birds overall, prosecutors said. It’s illegal to buy or sell eagle feathers or other parts. Branson made between $180,000 and $360,000 from 2009 to 2021 selling bald and golden eagle parts illegally, court records said.

The hospital, Baptist Health in Richmond, Kentucky, and the organ procurement group declined interviews with CNN. At the federal level, the Health Resources and Services Administration, through the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, is investigating, as well. She said the hospital told her that another scan showed no brain activity. The coordinator was in tears, Miller said, and the doctor who was supposed to do the organ procurement was upset and left. Some advocates for gender-affirming care for youth say the report mischaracterizes the normal caution being taken by researchers to carefully present and interpret scientific data. “They’re in really good shape when they come in, and they’re in really good shape after two years,” Olson-Kennedy told the Times. Her description appears to contradict the baseline characteristics of the 95 study participants, which were published in 2022. Numerous studies have documented high rates of suicide and suicidal thoughts in transgender children and teenagers, and the physical changes of puberty can greatly increase the distress of feeling trapped in the wrong body. Nine children – about 4% of the sample – expressed regret over puberty blockers or hormones, and four discontinued their therapy.

The Many Links Between Project 2025 and Trump’s WorldFormer president Donald J. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he had nothing to do with Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s conservative policy initiative to reshape the federal government. But Project 2025 has numerous ties to Mr. Trump and his campaign, a New York Times analysis has found. L. ZorcJump to the full list of authors, editors and contributorsSpokespeople for Project 2025 have denied that they are advocates for any particular candidate, and Project 2025 has no official ties to the Trump campaign. To limit the appearance of connection, Mr. Trump’s transition team has been excluding prominent people linked to Project 2025 from its preparations. Project 2025 additionally calls for the dismantling of the federal Education Department, which Mr. Trump has also pledged to do.

Country music superstar Garth Brooks has named the woman who, as Jane Roe, accused him of rape in a lawsuit last week. In an amended complaint filed in federal court in Mississippi on Tuesday, Brooks’ lawyers publicized the accuser’s name. And in another filing, they said that Brooks “is the victim of a shakedown” and that the woman “flouted” the authority of a judge in a related case. Out of spite and to punish, he publicly named a rape victim,” the woman’s attorneys said. She did not use her name, but she named Brooks.

CNN —Amid an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, travelers coming into the United States who have been in Rwanda in the previous 21 days will be screened starting next week, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. There are no confirmed cases of Marburg virus disease – a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – outside Rwanda, and officials have said that the current risk to the US is low. The CDC is also issuing a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, recommending that people reconsider nonessential travel to Rwanda, and sending automated texts to air travelers arriving from Rwanda to share information and instructions. As of Monday, there have been 56 confirmed cases of Marburg in Rwanda, with 36 people in isolation and treatment, and 12 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. The CDC and the World Health Organization have deployed teams of experts to Rwanda to provide guidance and assistance to public health workers there.

A new lawsuit filed in California state court alleges country star Garth Brooks sexually assaulted and battered a hair and makeup artist working for him. In the 27-page lawsuit, Roe makes several allegations against the country singer. The lawsuit notes Roe first worked for Brooks’ wife, Trisha Yearwood, starting in 1999 and only started working for Brooks in 2017. Roe’s lawsuit is seeking damages and a jury trial. “We applaud our client’s courage in moving forward with her complaint against Garth Brooks,” Roe’s legal team wrote in a statement.

CNN —Country music star Garth Brooks has been accused of sexual assault and battery in a lawsuit from a “Jane Roe” who says she worked as a hairstylist and makeup artist for the award-winning singer. The complaint, filed in a state court in California on Thursday and obtained by CNN, states the alleged incidents occurred in 2019. According to the suit, Brooks and Roe traveled to Los Angeles on Brooks’ private jet. “Usually there were others on Brooks’ private jet but this time, Ms. Roe and Brooks were the only two passengers,” the complaint states. The complaint states Brooks “repeated remarks” about “having a threesome” with his wife.

CNN —For the first time in Rwanda’s history, its health ministry is dealing with an outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – but unlike Ebola, there is no treatment or vaccines for Marburg, and it has a fatality rate of 88%. In addition to sending medical supplies, the World Health Organization said over the weekend that it is deploying a team of seven global experts in hemorrhagic disease to Rwanda who can provide guidance for public health experts on the ground. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that it is also sending experts to Rwanda to help support testing and contact-tracing efforts. There are no cases of Marburg in the United States, and the risk to Americans with this outbreak is low. Unlike in some other sub-Saharan African countries that have dealt with Marburg virus disease, Rwanda has a strong public health system, according to WHO.

Mental health concernsStill, other than rushing water, the biggest health concern from a flood may be mental, studies show. Storms can exacerbate existing mental health problems or lead to new ones. The federal government offers a Disaster Distress Helpline to help those struggling with mental health problems resulting from a storm. That toll-free number, staffed by mental health professionals, is 1-800-985-5990. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides free emotional support to people in mental health crises and connects them to local resources.

The study found that self-reported suicide attempts among these young people did not seem to increase while these bills were under debate in their state. But once the bills became law, the researchers saw a statistically significant increase in suicide attempts among young trans and nonbinary people who lived in those states. “Enacted anti-transgender laws may really be a source of increased minority stress that leads to increased suicide risk or other mental health issues,” Nath said. When legislation is affirming of a member of the community, research shows, suicide attempts decrease. “So it’s not surprising that these laws we now see are demonstrated to have an association with risk of suicide attempts.”

My mom is a little old-fashioned and has been upset with me for letting my boyfriend significantly influence my financial decisions. She has said multiple times that a man should have no say in my finances until he's put a ring on my finger. One, your mom has hard-won life experiences to offer, and you would be wise to hear her out. Only that we shouldn't reject our parents' advice out of hand simply because they're "old-fashioned" or we think they're "projecting". Instead, it's about nobody having a say over anyone else's finances until they have a genuine stake in them.
