Two people were killed and a third was injured after a house in an Ohio village exploded and caught fire Tuesday morning, officials said. The home exploded at around 8:44 a.m. in Bethel, a village of around 2,600 southeast of Cincinnati, Bethel Fire Chief Christopher Cooper said at a news conference. “It was a large explosion that had sent debris across the neighborhood,” Cooper said, describing the scene as chaotic. A burning body was discovered in a driveway of a home in Northeast Philadelphia early Tuesday morning, as police describe the death as “suspicious.”The Philadelphia police and fire departments responded to a report of a fire in a driveway in the 8000 block of Leonard Street shortly after 3 a.m., and found a man “with severe burns laying in the driveway,” officials said in a news release. The man, whose age was not known, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:23 a.m.A gas can and struck matches were found near the body, police said. The body was taken to the medical examiner's office and the investigation is ongoing. NBC News has reached out Philadelphia medical examiner's office for comment. A fence neighboring the driveway appeared to be damaged by the fire and NBC Philadelphia reported a K-9 officer was sniffing for clues at the scene early Tuesday.

CNN —Travelers aboard a Southwest Airlines flight preparing to leave Denver Friday had to evacuate after a passenger’s cell phone battery caught on fire and caused an airplane seat to catch fire as well. The Boeing 737-700 was still parked at a gate with 108 passengers on board when the incident occurred at Denver International Airport, according to Southwest. Crew members were able to extinguish the seat fire, the statement said. “Southwest’s customer care team is working to accommodate the passengers on another aircraft to their original destination of Houston,” an airline spokesperson said. A New Jersey school district faces legal action from three separate lawsuits filed this year, following the firing of its openly gay school superintendent. In a lawsuit filed in May, John Berenato, the former superintendent of the Manchester Township School District, accused the district of sexual orientation discrimination that led to his firing in November of last year. According to court documents, Antonucci was with Berenato when he received “disgusting derogatory texts regarding sexual acts” from district board members. President-elect Donald Trump is planning to nominate South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem to serve as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, according to four sources familiar with the decision. As Homeland Security secretary, Noem would oversee a number of key federal agencies including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Secret Service, TSA and the Coast Guard. Noem has criticized President Joe Biden's handling of the border, echoing arguments made by Trump that violent criminals are flooding into the country. Similar to Trump's other allies, Noem had signaled support for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s top leader on Tuesday warned President-elect Donald Trump not to interfere in the Chinese territory’s internal affairs after he said he would “100%” free the imprisoned pro-democracy activist and tycoon Jimmy Lai. He said Hong Kong, whose government denies that judicial independence is under threat, also valued the rule of law. “In these respects, I hope that all countries will respect the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and avoid political interference that could affect the judiciary and normal commercial activities in Hong Kong,” he said. Marco Rubio of Florida for secretary of state in his administration in the coming days, according to three sources familiar with the selection process. Foreign policy is one of the few areas in which there is a deep philosophical disagreement among Trump's base. But there remains a different strain of foreign policy thinking among even prominent Trump supporters. Even though Rubio is an avowed Trump supporter, the perception is that he was one of the "less MAGA" options, a Trump ally told NBC News. Trump had considered Rubio as a running mate before he ultimately chose Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio.
