As of Sunday afternoon, Yevgeny Prigozhin had not posted to Telegram for more than 24 hours. The Wagner boss normally shares multiple posts a day with his more than 640,000 followers. But ever since announcing an abrupt end to his rebellion in a 58-second audio message, the normally outspoken Wagner boss has gone silent. Prigozhin, in his last message, claimed he was ending his march on Moscow to avoid bloodshed. It has now been viewed more than 8.1 million times on his corporate "Concord" press account, which has some 1.3 million followers.

Russia back in investors' focus after weekend mutiny

Financial markets have often been volatile since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, which caused ruptures in markets and through global finance as banks and investors rushed to unwind exposure. After Saturday's events, some investors said they were focused on the potential impact to safe-haven assets such as U.S. Treasuries and on commodities prices, as Russia is a major energy supplier. Goldberg said that despite the de-escalation, "investors may remain nervous about subsequent instability, and could remain cautious." “Markets typically do not respond well to events that are unfolding and are uncertain,” particularly relating to Putin and Russia, said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial. Year-to-date the S&P 500 (.SPX) is up 13%, although it has lost steam in recent days with interest rates in focus.

US agencies had intelligence suggesting Yevgeny Prigozhin was planning action in Russia. There were enough signals to know "something was up," a US official told The Washington Post. "There were enough signals to be able to tell the leadership that something was up," an anonymous US official told the news outlet. This weekend, Prigozhin's Wagner Group launched a remarkable armed mutiny in Russia, with fighters first seizing the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don before marching on the country's capital. The announcement was generally seen as a means of bringing the mercenary group under official Russian military control.

Members of the Wagner Group prepare to depart from the Southern Military District's headquarters and return to their base on June 24, 2023 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. Chaos in Russia works to Kyiv's advantage, Ukraine officials said on Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his army can capitalize on the disorder caused this weekend as mercenaries marched towards Moscow. Just complete chaos," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address, urging Ukraine's allies to use the moment and send more weapons to Kyiv. "Any chaos behind the enemy lines works in our interests," State-run Ukrinform news agency quoted Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba as saying on Saturday. Putin called Prigozhin's actions a "blow to Russia," but there were no immediate signs his rule was threatened.

Russia's mercenary Wagner Group rebelled this weekend, nearly reaching Moscow before calling it off. The Wagner Group, a powerful paramilitary organization led by former Putin ally Yevgeny Prigozhin, took over a Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don without issue on Saturday and then continued to push toward Moscow. Blinken was just one of many US officials monitoring the situation in Russia on Saturday as the Wagner Group marched toward Moscow. "I think we've seen more cracks emerge in the Russian facade," Blinken added. "We'll see if this means that Wagner forces are coming out of Ukraine.

And they clearly had little interest in helping Mr. Putin avoid a major, embarrassing fracturing of his support. While it is not clear exactly when the United States first learned of the plot, intelligence officials conducted briefings on Wednesday with administration and defense officials. Still, American officials concluded that Mr. Prigozhin’s public statements were not controlled by Mr. Putin. But it was only in recent days that intelligence officials got the initial warnings that Mr. Prigozhin might take action. President Biden, speaking in October, talked of the dangers that Mr. Putin would pose if he felt cornered and said the United States was looking for “off ramps” for Mr. Putin.

Yulia Morozova/Reuters/FILEThe chief of the Wagner private military group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, on Friday accused Russian military leadership of striking a Wagner military camp and killing a "huge amount" of his mercenary forces. Prigozhin claimed that the Russian Ministry of Defense tricked Wagner and he vowed to "respond to these atrocities." Prigozhin claimed that the "evil that is being carried out" by Russia's military leadership "must be stopped" following the alleged attack. "The details started to appear; Minister of Defense arrived to Rostov especially to conduct an operation to destroy Wagner PMC. And earlier this month, the Wagner boss said he won't sign contracts with Russia’s defense ministry, rejecting an attempt to bring his force in line.

Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Western countries against exploiting the “attempted armed mutiny” in its country to achieve what it called Russophobic goals and said it was convinced the situation would be resolved in the near future. The events of the past 24 hours had aroused deep resentment in Russian society, the ministry said, adding that Russians strongly support President Vladimir Putin. The ministry didn't mention Wagner or its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose forces are headed in column toward Moscow having taken Rostov some 600 miles to the south of the capital earlier Saturday.

He said he would do everything to protect Russia, and that "decisive action" would be taken to stabilise the situation in Rostov-on-Don, a southern city where Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said his forces had taken control of all military installations. CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing the greatest threat to his authority in two decades after Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner paramilitary group and Putin’s former ally, launched an apparent insurrection. Prigozhin has been highly critical of Russia’s military leadership and their handling of the war in Ukraine, but he had always stopped short of criticizing Putin directly. Wagner group also claimed to have seized Russian facilities in a second city, Voronezh, some 600 kilometers (372 miles) to the north of Rostov-on-Don. Alexander Gusev, the governor of the Voronezh region, said the Russian military was engaging in “combat measures” in the area. Stunning escalationSaturday’s dramatic events come off the back of Prigozhin’s very public and months-long feud with Russia’s military leadership.

For years, Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the Wagner mercenary leader who conducted a brief rebellion against the Russian military, had been a loyal supporter of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. In recent months, he continued to steer clear of directly criticizing Mr. Putin, even as he increasingly used social media to lambaste Russia’s military, accusing its leaders of treason and blaming them for failing to provide his forces with enough resources. Mr. Putin mobilized Russian troops to quell what he called an armed rebellion, and the Belarusian president, a Putin ally, negotiated a halt to the Wagner advance. Here’s a look at Mr. Prigozhin’s history and some of the claims he has made:December 2016The United States imposed sanctions against 15 Russian entities, including Mr. Prigozhin, for their dealings in Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, and in Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatists seized territory the same year. The Treasury Department targeted businesspeople who were associates of Mr. Putin or were involved in activities that aided in Russia’s destabilization of Ukraine.

LONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - Britain's defence ministry said on Saturday that the Russian state was facing its greatest security challenge of recent times, following what it said appeared to be a move by Wagner Group mercenary forces towards Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an emergency televised address on Saturday that an "armed mutiny" by the Wagner Group was treason, and that anyone who had taken up arms against the Russian military would be punished. "Over the coming hours, the loyalty of Russia's security forces, and especially the Russian National Guard, will be key to how this crisis plays out," Britain's defence ministry said in a regular intelligence update. "This represents the most significant challenge to the Russian state in recent times," it added. "With very limited evidence of fighting between Wagner and Russian security forces, some have likely remained passive, acquiescing to Wagner," the defence ministry added.
