SAVANNAH, Ga. — David Shockley doesn’t understand his son Darius’ political ideology. “It makes no sense,” said David, who is Black and plans to vote for former President Donald Trump for a second time. The latest NBC News Stay Tuned Gen Z poll, powered by SurveyMonkey, found that more than half of Gen Z respondents ages 18 to 29 say they have different political views than at least one of their parents. Both David and Darius — two Black men in a battleground state — are emblematic of a voter base that Democrats and Republicans see as integral to success. “Despite the chasm between the political views, we still come together on our—” said David as he searched for the right word.

Some officials pointed to Colorado as a strong example of planning for potential chaos surrounding the electors meeting. GeorgiaIn Georgia, state law mandates that electors “shall” meet at the state Capitol, and elections officials there are making sure they will. MichiganIn Michigan, state law requires electors to meet this year on Dec. 17 in the state Capitol’s Senate chamber. State officials indicated there was no leeway to change that. Per state law, the electors meet in the state House chamber of the state Capitol on the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday in December (Dec. 17).

A flurry of remarkably good economic news over the past week could create a daunting mandate for whoever is elected the next U.S. president: Don't mess it up. The whole damn world," President Joe Biden said Tuesday during an event announcing new infrastructure grants at the Port of Baltimore. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are both pitching themselves as the best steward of the future health of the U.S. economy. Trump has pledged universal tariffs on all imports from all countries, a sweeping immigrant deportation program, deepening corporate tax cuts and more. Economists and even some of Trump's own allies note that his proposed universal tariffs, mass deportations and tax cuts could, at least temporarily, send major shockwaves through the economy, triggering potential market crashes.

That shortage also affects rent prices. In August, Harris unveiled a multi-pronged plan to lower housing costs. The plan also includes two main proposals to lower rent costs. Both plans to lower rent would be subject to congressional approval, meaning that the measures may be difficult to pass even if Harris wins the presidency. Unlike Harris, Trump has not rolled out a formal housing plan, but he has tied plans to deport undocumented immigrants to housing.

The handful of Americans who have won $1 million checks from tech billionaire Elon Musk’s super PAC have a few things in common. He said he didn’t know the process the super PAC used to pick his name and didn’t ask. He said he believes Democrats are not ideologically predisposed to sign Musk’s petition in support of the First and Second Amendments. It was the second piece of sophisticated Russian disinformation in a week to gain traction online that falsely asserted voter fraud in a key swing state. Easterly said she expected more attempts by Russia and foreign adversaries to spread false information before and after Election Day. The first video falsely claimed to show a person ripping up filled-in ballots in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. U.S. intelligence officials said the video was Russian made and designed to shake public faith in the democratic process. Federal authorities were countering foreign disinformation by “flooding the zone with accurate information,“ Easterly, of CISA, said in her interview on MSNBC.

The DOJ and FBI are preparing to combat election lies but have limited authority. Affordable Care Act coverage is available for DACA recipients for the first time. For the DOJ that means setting up an Election Threats Task force, focusing on the prosecutions of people who threaten election officials. To understand how that might play out, NBC News interviewed current and former Justice Department and FBI officials, as well as legal experts. For many DACA recipients who are unable to get job-based health insurance, a lack of access to government-funded programs meant their insurance options were limited or too expensive.

Voter turnout among this group is low — less than 8% in the 2020 presidential election, according to FVAP, compared with almost 67% overall. Overseas voters “can sway an election, especially in the swing states,” said James Lockett, chair of Democrats Abroad Hong Kong. During the 2022 midterm elections, overseas voters also made the difference in close races in Connecticut, New Hampshire and North Carolina, the DNC said. Even as Republicans raise concerns about overseas voters, their presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump, appears to be seeking their support. “You can’t treat overseas Americans as second-class citizens, and I don’t care if they are Republicans, Democrats or independents.”

But the former president, no stranger to personal attacks, reserved his most violent comments for former Rep. Liz Cheney. In a lengthy and uncompromising riff on Cheney, Trump seemed to insinuate that the former congresswoman would be less of a “war hawk” — as Trump referred to her — if she was in a war herself with guns “trained on her face.”“She’s a radical war hawk. You know when the guns are trained on her face — you know, they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building,” Trump continued. In the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the relationship between Trump and Cheney frayed. Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the architects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, have endorsed Harris over Trump.

Those rules were designed to prevent a repeat of the abuses of Richard Nixon, who improperly used the Justice Department to punish his political enemies. A new president appoints roughly 300 senior Justice Department officials, including the U.S. attorneys who run offices across the country. Atlanta rap star Young Thug agreed to change his plea to guilty Thursday in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, a stunning turn that, if approved by the judge, would bring his high-profile case to a close. The agreement comes after three of Young Thug's co-defendants took plea deals this week following mounting speculation that Whitaker could order a mistrial. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis used Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, statute to claim Young Thug and his associates are a street gang with ties to the national Bloods gang. Whitaker this week approved plea deals for three of them: Quamarvious Nichols, 29; Marquavius Huey, 28; and Rodalius Ryan, 18. Young Thug first gained mainstream success with his 2014 drug anthem "Stoner."

The early votes of new voters — voters who did not show up in 2020 — are of particular interest because they are votes that could change what happens in 2024 relative to the last presidential election. The data out of Pennsylvania shows large differences in the number of votes cast by new voters, both by party registration and by gender. More new voters are registered Democrats than Republicans, and new female voters are driving this partisan gap. The new male voters are only slightly more likely to be Democrats than Republicans, but among new female voters, Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1. But the Republican advantage in new Arizona voters so far is being driven largely by male voters.
