General Motors and Stellantis said they have laid off additional workers because of consequences related to the United Auto Workers strike. The plants make parts for Jeep vehicles built at the automaker's Toledo Assembly Complex, where workers are also on strike. GM's Fairfax Assembly plant builds the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Cadillac XT4 crossover. "We have said repeatedly that nobody wins in a strike," GM said in a statement. Nearly 13,000 GM, Ford and Stellantis workers are on strike at the Wentzville, Toledo and Wayne plants.

Stellantis said the facility would "continue to be our North American headquarters and North America technical center." It's not guaranteed the facilities would close under a labor deal; however, Stellantis is required to include potential closures or sales of any location where a UAW member works, a company source said. Stellantis North American Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart, who is overseeing the UAW talks, said the company needs to "modernize" the Mopar facilities. Stewart, without disclosing details of the plan, described the company's proposal for Belvidere as a "very compelling offer." The Mopar facilities that could close include Atlanta PDC; Boston PDC; Centerline Warehouse & Packaging; Chicago PDC; Marysville PDC; Milwaukee PDC; New York PDC; Orlando PDC; Sherwood PDC; and Warren PDC.

The standoff between the UAW and major automakers Stellantis, Ford and General Motors reached a fever pitch Friday, with the union starting work stoppages after an agreement wasn't met by a Thursday night deadline. UAW President Shawn Fain said earlier this week that Stellantis had previously offered a 17.5% increase. Under the new proposal, starting pay for supplemental employees would increase by $4.22, or nearly 27%, to $20 an hour. Stellantis leadership also pushed back against the union's descriptions of the automaker's plans to close or sell 18 facilities. The company has said it aims to run parts distribution centers more efficiently and continue shifting resources toward electric vehicles.

Here are the big questions about the move, which led to a slide in shares of Chinese EV makers on Thursday:WHY EXPORT TO EUROPE AND HOW MUCH HAS IT GROWN? That is mainly due to Beijing's decade-old industry promotion policy of incentives and subsidies that enabled China to become the world's biggest EV market and control the global EV supply chain, including raw materials. The single largest exporter is Tesla, accounting for 40% of China's EV exports between January and April, U.S. thinktank the Center for Strategic and International Studies says. Chinese state subsidies for electric and hybrid vehicles totalled $57 billion between 2016 and 2022, consultants AlixPartners have estimated. It paid out nearly $15 billion to encourage EV purchases through 2021, China Merchants Bank International has estimated.

Walter Isaacson's book "Elon Musk" hit shelves Tuesday, and the author told CNBC's "Squawk Box" about a heated exchange he documented between the Tesla CEO and Bill Gates. Isaacson said his book chronicles the good, bad and ugly behind Musk, and that one of the things that upsets the billionaire is when people short Tesla stock to try and make a profit. Early last year, Musk met with Gates, co-founder of Microsoft , who had previously shorted the automaker's stock and bet that it would decrease in value. "The demons and dancing in Elon Musk's head include people who short Tesla," Isaacson said Tuesday.

Tesla stock rallied over 5% on Monday after a Morgan Stanley (MS.N) note suggested the automaker's Dojo supercomputer could bolster Tesla's market value. Hazeltree, which tracks 12,000 equities globally, said the second and third most shorted stocks last month were Charter Communications (CHTR.O) and Apple (AAPL.O) respectively. Those included investors with funds taking long and short positions in stocks: Diamond Hill, Leuthold Funds and Forum Funds. "Taking out a short position against Tesla, as Gates did, results in the highest return only if a company goes bankrupt!" Hedge funds were net short consumer discretionary stocks, which would include Tesla, for the year ending Sept. 8, according to the Goldman note.

Dojo can open up new addressable markets that "extend well beyond selling vehicles at a fixed price," Morgan Stanley analysts led by Adam Jonas said in a note on Sunday. The Wall Street brokerage upgraded Tesla's stock to "overweight" from "equal-weight" and made it their "top pick," replacing Ferrari's U.S.-listed shares . That's about 76% higher than Tesla's market value of about $789 billion, based on the stock's close of $248.5 on Friday. Morgan Stanley raised its revenue estimate from Tesla's network services business to $335 billion in 2040, from $157 billion earlier. Jonas expects the unit to account for more than 60% of Tesla's core earnings by 2040, nearly doubling from 2030.

Some Tesla engineers "hated" the look of the Cybertruck, design chief Franz von Holzhausen told Walter Isaacson. Certain engineers secretly worked on a alternate version, Isaacson wrote in his new book on Elon Musk. "A majority of the people in this studio hated it," von Holzhausen said of the futuristic design, according to the book. Musk, von Holzhausen, and a spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication. Those who have pre-ordered the vehicle with a $100 deposit have been nitpicking the final version of the Cybertruck.

A United Auto Workers union strike could occur as soon as Friday. A 10-day strike could cost the economy $5.6 billion and hurt Biden in the election. A 10-day strike of over 143,000 workers could reduce the nation's gross domestic product by $5.6 billion, AEG found, which could push Michigan into a recession. Despite a lack of inventory, industry profits skyrocketed, even though 2022 was the worst year for sales for the auto industry in over a decade. A UAW strike could damage the Fed's progress in bringing inflation down to its 2% target.

Demonstrators during a United Auto Workers (UAW) practice picket outside the Stellantis Mack Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan, US, on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023. The automaker's offer would provide a 14.5% wage increase over the four-year term of the proposed deal for most of Stellantis's roughly 43,000 UAW-represented hourly workers. The proposed wage increase is larger than those offered to the union by rivals General Motors and Ford Motor, which offered raises of 10% and 9%, respectively. But the proposed deal still falls well short of the union's demands, which include a 40% hourly pay increase, a 32-hour workweek, and restoration of traditional-style pension plans, among other items. Only about 30% of Stellantis's UAW-represented workers — those hired before October 2007 — currently have pension plans.

Mercedes will also offer a lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP, battery in the new CLA model lineup due to hit showrooms in early 2025, a first for any Mercedes EV, the CEO said in an interview. Mercedes will preview the future electric CLA with a prototype to be unveiled at the IAA auto show in Munich, Germany on Sunday. Getting more driving range using less energy from the battery is the key target for the German automaker's future EV development, Kaellenius said.
