CNN —Germany is set to hold a snap election on February 23 after an agreement was reached among parties in the country’s fractured parliament on Tuesday, according to reports from public broadcaster ARD. The confidence vote will be held on December 16 following an agreement from all parliamentary parties, according to ARD. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier needs to rubber-stamp the date of the election, but reports suggest this is a formality. Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, said last week, “there is absolutely no reason to wait until January” to call the confidence vote. His government has grown increasingly unpopular in Germany, with Scholz also one of the least popular chancellors ever, according to a September opinion poll.

CNN —A group of people carrying Nazi flags demonstrated outside a community theater performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in Livingston County, Michigan, in a display of antisemitism. Several masked men showed up waving Nazi flags and reportedly shouted antisemitic and racist slurs outside the American Legion Post 141 in Howell on Saturday during the play, according to CNN affiliate WXYZ. “The Diary of Anne Frank” was published posthumously and has been translated into more than 70 languages in more than 60 nations, with several film and stage adaptations. Her diary is often a teen’s first introduction to the horrors of the Holocaust during World War II. In July, a statue of Anne in a local park was vandalized with the word “Gaza” scrawled in red paint.

The price of bitcoin hit an all-time high this weekend, a rally that started shortly after Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election. From March to November, the price has been mostly confined to a range of $50,000 to $70,000. Trump's election has been heralded by some as a positive sign for the prices of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Investors may also be responding to fears of inflation resurfacing under Trump, after months of price increases settling in at a more subdued pace. Robinhood, the app-based trading platform that allows for crypto trades, was also set to hit an all-time high.

HONG KONG — They rode for soup dumplings — and a sense of youthful liberation in pressured times. But the band of university students who cycled through the night would ultimately be met by a red light from authorities, after their viral quest grew so popular that it snarled traffic in central China and overwhelmed the ancient capital, Kaifeng. By the weekend, tens of thousands of students had joined this self-proclaimed "night riding army," seeking not just breakfast, but also a way to travel and socialize without spending much money. They rented shared bikes and cycled in groups through the night from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng. SEOUL, South Korea — As foreign governments prepare to deal with a second Trump administration, at least one key U.S. ally is hoping to make headway on the fairway. CNN —Haiti swore in a new prime minister on Monday after a Spirit Airlines plane was hit by gunfire over the country’s capital Port-au-Prince, according to a diplomatic source in the country. All flights to Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport have been suspended until Nov. 18, according to Haiti’s civil aviation authority. It added that the aircraft has been taken out of service, and Spirit services to Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien have been suspended. Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, 45, was detained without incident on Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina, after being recognized at a local hospital, according to the sheriff’s office in Monroe County, Tennessee. Hamlett has pending charges for first-degree murder out of Monroe County, Tennessee, and a parole violation out of Alabama, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Investigators also discovered Hamlett had been using Andrade’s identification and that he was wanted in Alabama on a parole violation, the sheriff’s office said. He had a mental health disorder and “was known to leave home and live on the streets,” the sheriff’s office said. Steven Douglas Lloyd, 34, was identified as the victim by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee.
