Japan is considering using its Kawasaki C-2 tactical transport aircraft to drop stand-off missiles. A Kawasaki C-2 flies around the Hawaiian Islands in September 2022. The Rapid Dragon allows the deployment of long-range cruise missiles using standard airdrop procedures from a cargo aircraft. After successful extraction, the AGM-158B JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range) missiles extend their wings and turn on the engine. The Kawasaki C-2 is a long range twin-engine transport aircraft designed to replace the old C-1.

Raised in affluence, Senator Feinstein has long been among the wealthiest members of Congress. Among the backdrops to the fight over Mr. Blum’s estate, however, are questions about the extent of his fortune, as well as the out-of-pocket cost of home health care that Senator Feinstein has received since her bout with shingles earlier this year. During his lifetime, Mr. Blum, Senator Feinstein’s third husband and a private equity magnate, was often referred to in public accounts as a billionaire. However, people familiar with the family’s finances dispute that characterization and say that Mr. Blum’s wealth was less than some heirs had expected. Mr. Blum’s friends said that the pandemic cut deeply into his investments, particularly his extensive holdings in hotels.

But plans to introduce bilingual road signs featuring both the English and te reo Maori languages have sparked a divisive, racially charged debate ahead of the country’s looming general election. Slightly less than a quarter of New Zealand’s 892,200 Maori speak te reo Maori as one of their first languages, according to the latest government data. Part of the reason that te reo Maori is not so widely spoken is that back in New Zealand’s colonial era there were active efforts to stamp it out. The Native Schools Act 1867 required schools to teach in English where possible and children were often physically punished for speaking te reo Maori. “The primary objective of these standards is to guarantee that all road signs are unambiguous, uniform, and legible to all,” he said.

Joan and Ned Woodward had a feeling they'd enjoy their stay at Timbers Kaua'i, but they had no idea the Hawaii resort would become a permanent fixture in their lives. The Washington, D.C.-based couple decided to vacation at the 450-acre resort community last summer after receiving a glowing review from their daughter, who had already been and raved about the golf course and restaurant. The pair booked a three-bedroom suite and took the family for what was supposed to be a short stay. "By day three, I was talking with the salesperson about buying into it," Joan, an insurance executive, tells CNBC Make It. "It was the cherry on the cake, especially since we're such big hockey fans," Joan says.

CNN —Hawaii’s Big Island is under a tropical storm warning as Tropical Storm Calvin is forecast to pass over or just south of the island, threatening to bring dangerous coastal surf, heavy rain and gusty winds to the area, according to the National Hurricane Center. Calvin is expected to remain a weak tropical storm as it swiftly presses westward and passes by the state. The heavy rainfall poses the most significant threat, prompting flood watches for the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon. Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms will reach the Big Island by Tuesday evening, and continue through the night. Flash flooding is the primary threat, especially for Big Island.

When they first began dating, both had been adamant that marriage was not in the cards. “Getting married was almost the scariest thing I could do,” said Ms. Rinehart, who goes by Brooke. Starting a family and the resulting closeness ameliorated their fears about marriage, and led to them independently changing their perspectives. “I thought, am I punishing myself by saying I’m not going to get married again and drawing that line in the sand?” Ms. Rinehart said.

The Vietnamese American Artists Searching for Identity

An-My Lê can barely recall the Hawaiian shirt that the blond American wore when he put her into a black cargo van. When dawn broke, she took one last glance at the landscape through the windows of the American C-130 aircraft as it disappeared into the clouds. Complicated emotions of uncertainty and anger, guilt and abandonment all intersect for artists from Lê’s generation; those who are not fully Vietnamese in Vietnam nor American in America. Shrouded in war, these Vietnam-born American artists use their memories not so much as a political protest as an emotional inquiry, through the generational traumas that have plagued their families since the day they left home. And only now are Western institutions finally giving these displaced artists room to engage with these traumas.

CNN —A sparkling new supernova has appeared in the night sky, and a telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii was perfectly poised to capture the aftermath of the cosmic burst. The supernova was first spotted within the spiral arms of the Pinwheel Galaxy by Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki on May 19. The Pinwheel Galaxy is in the direction of the Ursa Major constellation, about 21 million light-years from Earth. The new supernova glimmers bright blue in one of the galaxy’s spiral arms in the bottom left of the image. It’s the second supernova observed in the Pinwheel Galaxy in 15 years.

Kilauea, the most active volcano on Hawaii's Big Island, erupted and began spewing lava on Wednesday after a three-month pause. The US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory noticed a glow in a webcam at Kilauea's summit early in the morning before fissures opened up. The observatory said the lava was confined to the crater floor. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea is located, said it was expecting large numbers of people to view the eruption. Scientists at the observatory said that they were monitoring the eruption but that no communities on the island were currently at risk.
