It seems like only yesterday that the best golfers in the game were battling for a green jacket at the Masters Tournament, the season’s first major. With mid-July here, however, the stage is set for the final major, the British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, which begins on Thursday. It will be fascinating to see if Wyndham Clark, who was a surprise winner in the United States Open in June, can back it up at the British Open — and whether the world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, whose name always seems to be on the leaderboard, will make enough putts to win his second major after taking the Masters last year.

Fleetwood was born in Southport, around 30 miles north of Royal Liverpool, and the world number 21 would be a popular champion after a couple of near-misses. "It's nice to have a week that feels so close to home," Fleetwood told reporters on Wednesday. "As soon as the week starts you start sort of feeling The Open atmosphere, which you always think is very, very cool," Fleetwood said. Winning a major is a dream, winning The Open is a huge, huge dream. Fleetwood will play the first two rounds at Hoylake with American world number one Scottie Scheffler and Australian Adam Scott, both former Masters champions.

Victory at the Scottish Open on Sunday, however, continued a consistent year in which McIlroy has recorded eight top-10 finishes. He was second at last month's U.S. Open and the world number two is glad to be back at Hoylake. "It feels like such a long time ago," McIlroy said. "You're trying to rekindle the memories as I was driving from the airport last night and getting onto the Wirral. World number one Scottie Scheffler will lead the challengers along with third-ranked Jon Rahm and defending champion Smith while Tommy Fleetwood could be the best hope of a first English Open champion since 1992.

Australian Cameron Smith begins his title defence at 0958 in the company of U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark and Olympic gold medallist Xander Schauffele. Scheffler happy to fly under the radar

Scheffler was in contention to win last year's Open at St Andrews before fading with a closing 74 to finish tied 21st. Just trying to hit it a little bit better, chip a little bit better and putt a little bit better." Missed putts have proved costly for Scheffler but he believes he is close to rediscovering his touch on the greens. "I'm hitting a lot of good putts," he said. "Pretty soon, a lot of those good putts will start falling in the middle of the hole instead of dodging around the side of it."

When asked how the Fed plans for the worst case scenarios on the geopolitical front, he first responded in Fedspeak. Since the debut of the Grimace shake earlier this month, TikTok users have been excitedly ordering the shake, released in honor of McDonald’s character Grimace’s “birthday,” and then pretending to die on camera after consuming the purple beverage. They often dump the shake over their convulsing bodies, apparently signaling that Grimace, that bumbling bestie of Ronald McDonald, killed them. The Grimace shake, though, has become more infamous than beloved. In a typical “Grimace Shake” TikTok, an enthusiastic young person, Grimace shake in hand, will wish the big purple mascot a happy birthday before taking their first sip. When reached for comment, McDonald’s referred CNN to a tweet from Grimace: “meee pretending i don’t see the grimace shake trendd,” along with a photo of the purple one himself, eyebrows raised.

CNN —American golfer Gordon Sargent was the victim of a freak incident at the US Open on Sunday as he watched his two-and-a-half-foot putt bounce out of the hole. Sargent, who has just finished his sophomore year at Vanderbilt University, ended the tournament on four-over-par to claim low amateur honors – a medal awarded to the amateur with the best performance at the US Open. His impressive one-under final round included a bizarre moment on the 18th when his seemingly perfect putt somehow ended outside the hole. It has since been adjusted back into place.”Although the issue with the hole cost him a shot, Sargent still took low amateur honors by nine strokes at Los Angeles Country Club. “I think it just gives you confidence and also kind of shows what you need to work on,” he said.

Wyndham Clark wins the U.S. Open for his first major title

Wyndham Clark of the United States reacts to his winning putt on the 18th green during the final round of the 123rd U.S. Open Championship at The Los Angeles Country Club on June 18, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. "I just felt like my mom was watching over me today," Clark said after hoisting the silver U.S. Open trophy. McIlroy played a final round that typically wins a U.S. Open — 16 pars, one bogey. "I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship." Scheffler missed too many putts early on the back nine and needed help from Clark and McIlroy that never arrived.

Yet not everyone has given the host glowing reviews, including the major’s reigning champion Matt Fitzpatrick. And following Saturday’s third round, Fitzpatrick – whose hopes of becoming the first player to defend the US Open title since Brooks Koepka look slim – again spoke about the quality of the course and the atmosphere. Fitzpatrick added: “I’ve seen Brooks’ comments and I tend to agree with what he feels like that about this golf course. Yet firmer greens and fairways brought fresh criticisms of the course, and atmosphere, from Fitzpatrick on Saturday. “Very poor … It’s disappointing on the USGA side,” said Fitzpatrick of the atmosphere, according to Barstool Sports journalist Dan Rapaport.

CNN —Rickie Fowler led the US Open by two shots heading into the last hole of his third round. Clark continued to dazzle on his first ever US Open weekend, rebounding superbly after back-to-back bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes threatened to send him sliding. “I felt like I handled all of it really well,” Clark said. ET tomorrow, but will have to hold off the chase of seasoned winner Rory McIlroy to achieve their major aspirations. "Sort of felt somewhat stress-free out there, if you can ever call golf at a U.S. Open stress-free." This week marks the fifth time McIlroy has opened a major championship with three rounds in the 60s. While plenty confident in his ability, McIlroy admitted he was unsure what sort of boost he could take from his past major triumphs into Sunday's final round. Fowler leads midway through U.S. Open first round

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - American Rickie Fowler held the early lead at the U.S. Open on Thursday with Xander Schauffele in a group one shot back and Masters champion Jon Rahm four adrift midway through his first round at the Los Angeles Country Club. Fowler, runner-up in 2014, started on the back nine and produced six birdies and two bogeys through his first 10 holes. The 123rd U.S Open got underway against the backdrop of the bombshell announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the Saudi backers of the LIV circuit. Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick is in a group with last year's British Open winner Cameron Smith, one of the breakaway tour's biggest recruits. One of the morning's biggest attractions was an all-American grouping of world number one Scottie Scheffler with twice major champion Collin Morikawa and home favourite Max Homa.

It’s also the first major since the golfing world was rocked by the announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf earlier this month. 2 Jon Rahm spoke of the “betrayal” felt by PGA Tour players following the “bombshell” announcement, expressing his discomfort at the perceived lack of clarity and unanswered questions surrounding the deal. However, one of the partnership’s primary architects, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, was not on site to respond as he recuperates from a medical situation. Monahan has been relieved of day-to-day duties while he recovers, the PGA Tour announced Tuesday. After a second PGA Tour victory at the RBC Heritage in April earlier this year, the world No.

CNN —Two record-breakers, a pair of hole-in-ones, and a sea of low scores: Los Angeles Country Club served up a Hollywood blockbuster with a thrilling first round at the US Open on Thursday. The pair of hole-in-one’s highlighted a day of widespread low scoring, as birdies rained down around the North Course. Thursday’s 71.34 scoring average marked the lowest ever recorded in a first round at the US Open, beating the previous low of 72.29 at the 1993 tournament. Fowler’s 10 birdies marked the most ever recorded in a US Open round. “I joked a bit earlier, I think the USGA will be a bit frustrated that the number was that low today,” Scheffler told reporters.

For much of Collin Morikawa’s life, the Los Angeles Country Club was a mystery. “It’s demanding — it’s very different than what you expect from a Los Angeles golf course,” Morikawa said in an interview. The West Coast is known for Kikuyu grass and very sticky poa annua greens, bumpy greens in the afternoon. That’s not what Los Angeles Country Club is.”Instead, players will confront a course of Bermuda grass, with bentgrass on greens that Morikawa sees as PGA Tour-like because of their slopes and designs. 2 Jon Rahm has said “a lot” of players on the PGA Tour feel “betrayal” after the shock announcement of its partnership with LIV Golf. The decisions of some players to leave the established PGA Tour and DP World Tour to sign up with LIV Golf last year were met with consternation by many others. Now, with the two sides uniting once again, it opens questions about LIV Golf players’ eligibility for this year’s Ryder Cup which begins in September. Rahm has been a strong advocate of allowing LIV Golf players to be allowed to compete in the biennial tournament. However, players who left to join LIV Golf resigned their DP World Tour membership to do so.

Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will go head-to-head with reigning British Open winner Cameron Smith - another LIV recruit - and American Sam Bennett. World number one Scottie Scheffler headlines the morning action when he starts his bid alongside two-times major champion Collin Morikawa and home favourite Max Homa. The field of players teeing it off on Thursday is unchanged since the USGA previously said that, like the three other majors, it would allow both PGA Tour and LIV golfers to compete. But the feuds that broke out between golfers from the rival leagues is unlikely to be patched up so quickly.
