While we didn't work together directly, I interacted with him sometimes. But even back then, I knew that dating a coworker was a bad idea. AdvertisementThough our company didn't forbid colleagues from dating one another, we both already sensed the taboo nature of our dalliance so we tried to keep it a secret. When you add in the chance of sexual harassment allegations, I would never recommend dating a coworker. Even if you work in different departments, dating a coworker is opening a Pandora's box of emotions that are difficult to navigate professionally.

Over the last two years, my 12-year-old son has become increasingly consumed with going to the woods near our home. But just like many other tweens, he's also asked, "Can you get me a cellphone?" We bought him a pocket knife. He mostly keeps the knife in his pocket when he heads outdoors, only bringing it out when a project calls for a sharp object. As for the pocket knife, when it's not in use or at the bottom of his camo pants pocket, it stays safely displayed in his bedroom, a token of independence and ingenuity.

The last thing I expected after graduating from college and moving back home with my parents was to find my soulmate. I took a job waiting tables at a local Tex-Mex restaurant while I killed time applying to the Peace Corps. She has written a memoir about working for a secretive and wildly prestigious Wall Street hedge fund. Recruiters are one of the main gatekeepers for the hedge fund and private equity industries. I hadn't — but I had heard of Argon, a hedge fund that had long and widely been seen as financial royalty. A leading financial publication had called Carbon the world's hottest hedge fund. Another had named it one of the world's top-performing large hedge funds, ranking it among other hedge fund titans and their flagships, like Ray Dalio's Pure Alpha II and Ken Griffin's Citadel.

Read on for some of the things that surprised me when I first got to Ireland. I thought a lot of the phrases in Ireland would be similar to what I heard in the UK. But I knew I finally adapted to the language when I found the words "thanks a million" (or "thanks a mil") and "bye bye bye … bye bye bye bye" after any phone call slipping off my tongue. Although it's been an adjustment, unpredictability is what makes Ireland feel like things are still run by people, not by algorithms and advancement. But my alcohol consumption has definitely increased since living in Ireland because socializing here often happens exclusively at the pub.

However, I quickly learned that having a common name was going to make that difficult. Instead, the precocious little diva that I was, every Sarah I encountered posed a threat to my uniqueness. I combined my first and middle names, Sarah Elizabeth, into something I thought was unique, yet not so different that friends and family couldn’t catch on: Sarahbeth. No sooner than the ink dried on my new Social Security card did I learn the challenges of having a unique name, which I hadn’t anticipated. One particular annoyance sprouted immediately: having to spell it out or explain it every time I introduced myself (“Sarahbeth, one word, no hyphen, lowercase b…”).

Fourteen years ago, at a human rights conference in Oslo, I met Julian Assange. From the moment I encountered the wraithlike WikiLeaks founder, I sensed that he might be a morally dubious character. Though Mr. Assange insisted that his purpose was to expose American abuses, the leaks were also a boon to the Taliban and other authoritarian forces around the world. “Well, they’re informants,” Mr. Assange defiantly told them. In 2012, Mr. Assange hosted a talk show on RT (formerly Russia Today), the Kremlin-funded propaganda network that beams conspiracy theories and anti-Western narratives around the world.

Discussions of pay came up rather frequently and I felt it was my responsibility to be an ally to my female colleagues when it came to salaries. But I want to share my experiences to encourage other men in the workforce to share what they make with their female colleagues. For family bedtime reading, we just started “Julie of the Wolves” by Jean Craighead George. Mostly I try to write books that I would enjoy reading myself. But more than a decade into this career, I would still rather spend my time writing than doing just about anything else. It has a lot to do with perspective, which is something we can cultivate if we’re intentional about it. Piecing together a bunch of random scenes until they become one coherent story, like building a complicated jigsaw puzzle.
