CAAT will assure that workers get defined benefits in retirement, CAAT and Unifor said. Separately, the UAW and companies have not agreed on the complex issues raised by new electric-vehicle battery plants owned by joint ventures. Under U.S. labor law, the UAW would have to organize the battery joint ventures, which are separate entities from the automakers. So far, Ford and Stellantis have not matched GM's proposal on battery plants. Three of four battery plants Ford plans will be operated as joint ventures with South Korean battery maker SK On.

An Israeli couple was found alive hiding in their shelter after Hamas attacks on Saturday. Their family feared they were dead or kidnapped once communication with the couple was cut off. The IDF eventually found the couple, who had been hiding for 58 hours in their shelter. As Hamas launched brazen attacks across towns in Israel bordering Gaza, one Israeli couple took shelter in their kibbutz near the border, hiding so well that their family feared they were missing or dead. The IDF returned and found David and Denise Heiblum still hiding in their shelter in their home, some 58 hours later.

Next EU chief will need cash more than trade wars

What she sidestepped was how to find more cash and convince member states to pay up. Von der Leyen, or her successor, will have to figure out how to pay for enlargement. Von der Leyen tapped into trade frustrations with her pledge to investigate and possibly punish Chinese subsidies for car and battery makers. During her first term, von der Leyen succeeded in connecting the EU with bond investors via the 800 billion euro NextGenerationEU borrowing programme. A second term will require even more finesse to convince EU member states to raise money not just from markets, but from themselves.

In online forums, some Mack workers complained the raise was too small to keep up with inflation. Canadian workers at GM also face a contract talk deadline at midnight on Monday that could lead to another strike. In addition to the novel flat-pack delivery, Luvly is hoping that the electric car’s other features – including its super-light frame and swappable batteries – will make sustainable transport more affordable, says Håkan Lutz, Luvly CEO and co-founder. LuvlyA “Luvly” solutionLuvly O is a “light urban vehicle,” also known as a microcar. Luvly plans to license its patented light vehicle flat-pack framework to other car manufacturers to build their own branded versions. Resource-light and requiring less energy to manufacture than electric passenger cars, light electric vehicles (LEVs) such as microcars could make a serious dent in transport carbon emissions, says Brost. This is where Luvly hopes to add value: inspiring more car manufacturers to develop light urban vehicles with its patented framework.

Mack Trucks and UAW announced the tentative agreement early Monday, followed by releasing "highlights" of the deal later in the week to members. Neither UAW nor Mack Trucks have publicly released the tentative contract ahead of employee meetings to detail the agreement and voting this weekend. "Our strike is working, but we’re not there yet," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a livestreamed update on negotiations with the three automakers. Threatening to strike against GM's Arlington, Texas, plant that makes cash-cow SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade spurred GM to agree that EV battery factories would become union plants with UAW contracts, Fain said. GM is building three Ultium joint-venture battery plants with South Korea's LG Energy Solution (373220.KS). GM is building a fourth U.S. battery plant with Samsung SDI (006400.KS) in Indiana. Fain also said on Friday that the UAW could still strike against highly profitable pickup truck plants if progress stalls.
