Broadcom reported an earnings beat Thursday, driven by strong sales of its AI products and VMware software. We view Broadcom as one of the biggest AI beneficiaries through its networking and custom chip businesses. However, Broadcom generated $5.3 billion in free cash flow when excluding restructuring and integration cash costs in the quarter. The semi number is a slight miss versus expectations, and the difference is probably due to the non-AI business lines because AI sales are humming. Broadcom raised its full-year AI revenue forecast to $12 billion, up from prior guidance of over $11 billion.

The company slipped into the FTSE 250 during September's quarterly rebalancing, index provider FTSE Russell said in a statement, bringing its 15-year run in the U.K. large-cap FTSE 100 blue-chip index to a close. The company's current market cap of £2.34 billion ($3.06 billion) now puts it well below the other constituents of the FTSE 100, as well as some of the top performers in the FTSE 250. As such, funds that invest in the FTSE 100 will exit their Burberry holdings. The luxury label's addition to the FTSE 100 in September 2009 was taken as a further mark of its enduring appeal and its resilience, even amid the global financial crisis. The luxury sector as a whole has suffered from a prolonged downturn in consumer spending amid inflationary pressures and broader economic uncertainty.

Critical chip equipment supplier ASML is set to face softer demand from buyers of its products in the coming years — and the artificial intelligence boom won't be enough to offset these downside risks, according to analysts at investment bank UBS . Such memory chip makers include Samsung and Nvidia supplier SK Hynix. ASML is behind a key technology involved in chip manufacturing known as EUV, or extreme ultraviolet radiation. DRAM is a type of memory chip that's needed for a computer to function. Shares of the company were down more than 6% Wednesday, alongside a raft of other chip stocks , following a deep slide in Nvidia shares Tuesday .

While expectations are high and caution is certainly warranted, we don't think it's quite that simple. While the Oscillator and Williams' work do point to possible selling pressure ahead, we don't want to get too bearish. However, we don't think the risks are so elevated as to warrant more than a small cash raise. We still view Nvidia as an "own it, don't trade it" stock, but we also don't keep our heads in the sand. U.K. inflation rose to 2.2% in July, coming in slightly below expectations but inching back above the Bank of England's 2% target, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday. The headline inflation had come in at 2% in both May and June, in line with the Bank of England's target rate. So-called core-CPI — which excludes food, energy, alcohol and tobacco prices — came in at 3.3% in July, down from the 3.5% print of July, the statistics office said. The data comes after the Bank of England earlier this month cut interest rates for the first time in over four years, taking the key bank rate to 5%. Uncertainty remains about when the central bank will cut rates again, and whether another cut will even take place this year.

Gold prices edged lower on Wednesday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of a key U.S. inflation print later in the day that could set the tone for the Federal Reserve's September policy meeting. Data on Tuesday showed that U.S. producer prices increased less than expected in July, reinforcing market view that cooling inflation will allow the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates soon. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said he wants to see "a little more data" before he's ready to support lowering interest rates. Dollar tenses for data verdict on rate cut risks
  + stars: | 2024-08-13 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The greenback was idling at 147.17 yen , having briefly touched a one-week high of 148.23 overnight before profit-taking emerged. More important will be the consumer price report and retail sales for July which could have a material impact on whether the Fed eases by 25 basis points or 50 basis points in September. The former outcome would likely lift Treasury yields and support the dollar, while the latter would have the opposite effect. The futures market clearly still sees recession as a risk with 101 basis points of Fed easing priced in by Christmas, and more than 120 basis points for next year. "Although the trend is moderating, inflation is too high for the Fed to justify the market pricing 100bp of rate cuts between September and year-end."

The connection between business credit cards and personal creditWhen you apply for a business credit card, the process largely looks the same as getting approved for a personal credit card. Failure to make payments, as well as other delinquent behavior on a business credit card, will impact your personal credit because of this personal guarantee clause. How business card usage affects personal creditBeyond the initial hard inquiry from an application, you may be curious to know whether using a business credit card will impacts your personal credit. The same rule applies to business credit cards — and the effects of business card defaults on personal credit scores can be detrimental. As with personal credit cards, applying for multiple business credit cards can impact your personal credit score.

I traded for a hedge fund and served as senior technical analyst for an foreign exchange company during the great financial crisis of 2008 that saw a severe yen carry unwind. If the line is headed south the dollar is weakening relative to the yen, and the yen is strengthening relative to the dollar. On Monday, stocks struggled ahead of this week's inflation data, which will likely set the tone for short term market action. The S & P 500 was little changed, the Nasdaq Composite made a small advance while the Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back about a third of a percent. The first trade is a so-called tail hedge against a hotter-than-expected CPI print, i.e. buying S & P 500 put options. The value of the put contracts will increase if the S & P 500 falls on a surprising resurgence of inflation.
