The result at Bain Capital-backed Kioxia, formerly Toshiba Memory, compares with a loss of 130.8 billion yen three months earlier. Merger talks between Kioxia and Western Digital (WDC.O) have stalled, Reuters reported previously, after Kioxia investor SK Hynix (000660.KS) said it did not back the deal. Selling prices have bottomed out, Kioxia said, pointing to expected higher shipments of smartphones and PCs next year. Revenue fell quarter-on-quarter with Kioxia saying the smaller loss was because of higher average selling prices with a boost from the weaker yen. Separately, Toshiba (6502.T), which holds a stake in Kioxia after selling its chip unit to the Bain-led consortium in 2018, posted a 26.7 billion yen net loss in the second quarter.

"I do believe if the groups come together, there will be serious disorder," said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, the officer in charge. "The policing operation this weekend is huge," he told reporters, saying it would be "challenging and tense". There has been strong support and sympathy for Israel from Western governments, including Britain's, and many citizens over the Hamas attacks. Arm's big break came in 1993, when Apple launched its early handheld Newton device on the Arm610 processor. Arm's big break came in 1993 when Apple released its handheld Newton device on the Arm610 processor. Apple moved to its own Arm-based processors in Mac computers in 2020, breaking away from the Intel x86 processors that had powered them for 15 years. Qualcomm is another major customer making its latest PC processors using Arm, although that relationship is strained. This simplification is also making Arm the choice for non-chip companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft designing their own custom silicon.

Rene Haas, CEO of semiconductor company Arm, told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday that the company has moved beyond its beginnings, where it was primarily known for designing technology used in smartphones. Arm designs graphics chips and licenses them to companies, collecting royalties to earn much of its revenue. Haas said 70% of the world's population touches Arm in some way, with its technology present in many widely-used devices including electric cars, digital TVs and smart locks. On Wednesday, the chip designer released its first quarterly report since its IPO, reporting revenue that beat Wall Street's expectations. "The experience you get on these PCs — great performance, low battery life — again, that's what we're really good at," he said.

Auto Chip Makers Try to Avoid a Pileup

Semiconductor sales to the auto industry jumped 16% in 2022. The industry has been mired in a historic slump for more than a year now. The Semiconductor Industry Association, or SIA, reported last week that global chip sales in September fell 4.5% from the same period last year. That made for the 14th straight month of sales declines—a streak not seen in more than a decade. Much of the downturn has been due to weak sales of PCs, smartphones and other consumer and business electronics that saw a rise in demand earlier in the pandemic.

TOKYO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Japanese chip materials maker JSR Corp (4185.T) on Monday slashed its operating profit forecast for the current financial year by 62%, citing a weak recovery in demand for semiconductors and a slowdown in the biotech market. Investors are debating the recovery path for the chip industry which has been hit by a slowdown in demand for electronics such as smartphones and PCs. "We had projected an upturn in the second half of the year and as we've highlighted here we're no longer expecting that upturn," JSR CEO Eric Johnson told a news conference. Operating profit was 3.4 billion yen in the second quarter, following a loss of 6.1 billion yen three months earlier. A leading maker of photoresists used in chip making, JSR said sales for cutting edge extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography grew 15% year-on-year in the April-September period.

Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 870 shares of DD, increasing its weighting to 2.15% from 1.78%. To be fair, the stock deserved to be dinged because it was a mixed quarter from the chemical and material manufacturer. While Q3 beat estimates on EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), the company lowered its full-year outlook below Street expectations, mostly to reflect some ongoing softness in consumer electronics demand and slower water demand in China. Added to the order were a mishmash of unhelpful notions like “advancing equity” and collective bargaining. Chip Makers’ PC Boost Not Built to Last

PCs have proved to be the saving grace for Intel and Advanced Micro Devices this earnings season. Photo: Alex Kraus/Bloomberg NewsIt’s a testament to how odd the chip market is right now that personal-computer demand is actually a source of strength. PC sales have been in a downspin since early last year, following two years of pandemic-induced growth. The downturn has been such that the 7.6% year-over-year decline in unit sales that market-research firm IDC reported for the third quarter actually counted as a notable improvement, as sales had been falling by double digits for the previous five periods. IDC projects PC shipments will total 252 million units globally this year—down 14% from last year and the lowest annual sales number the firm has reported in more than a decade.

AMD boss Lisa Su said she "expected some growth going into 2024 as we think about sort of the AI PC cycle and some of the (Microsoft) Windows refresh cycles". Still, some investors see the lack of AI apps as a potential hurdle for their adoption.

But we remain optimistic the specialty chemicals company's electronics business will turn next year, leading to revived growth. At the same time, DuPont raised concerns about its water and safety solutions business due to ongoing destocking and a weaker China. The electronics and industrial segment is comprised of three subunits: semiconductor technologies, interconnect solutions and industrial solutions. Guidance DuPont shaved its full-year net sales outlook to about $12.17 billion, from a previous range of $12.45 billion to $12.55 billion. The company cited additional channel inventory destocking and slow industrial demand in China, mostly in its water solutions business, for its revised guidance.

The lack of competition in general search tools, the government argues, deprives consumers of improved quality and choice. In that version, Microsoft planned to build search into its toolbar so that users did not need to download separate extensions to search from that part of the browser. The search engine for that module would be determined by whatever users picked in the previous version of IE. Pichai testified that to his knowledge, "not a single user" used the IE setting in the earlier version of the browser to change the search engine from Microsoft's. Google had "proposed instead that users be prompted to select the default search provider the first time they use the inline search feature," Drummond wrote in the 2005 letter.

Reuters last week reported that Nvidia also plans to jump into the PC market as early as 2025. At Apple, the Mac hit $40.18 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2022, or about 11% of its revenue. While that was up 14% from the previous fiscal year, sales this year have slowed along with the rest of the PC industry, which has suffered a post-pandemic slump. Bajarin said he thinks that supply constraints will lead Apple to focus on higher-end Mac models used by large businesses.
