Logo and flags of Bayer AG are pictured outside a plant of the German pharmaceutical and chemical maker in Wuppertal, Germany. Shares of German life sciences company Bayer fell nearly 7% on Wednesday, after a U.S. court said it would review a case alleging that exposure to products of the company's Monsanto unit harmed individuals. Previously, an appeals court had overturned a $185 million award in the trial after finding flaws in the case in May, according to Reuters. Shares had tumbled more than 30% last year amid challenges including ongoing litigation over the Monsanto unit and high net debt. CNN —A Claude Monet pastel painting stolen by Nazis during World War II, which vanished for decades only to show up with a Louisiana art dealer, was returned Wednesday in New Orleans to the descendants of its original owners. The Monet was then purchased at auction by a Nazi art dealer and disappeared in 1941. A New Orleans-based antiquities dealer purchased it then sold it to a couple in Washington state. Since then, the FBI has been working to return the Monet to the Parlagi’s granddaughters, and the handoff was made Wednesday. The Parlagi family is still searching for several other art pieces stolen by the Nazis, including a signed Paul Signac watercolor from 1903 that was sold to the same Nazi art dealer as the Monet.

BRUNSWICK, Germany — A suspect in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann was acquitted of unrelated sexual abuse charges by a court in the German city of Brunswick on Tuesday. Christian Brueckner has been formally identified as a suspect in the case of “Maddie” McCann, who disappeared from her bedroom in 2007 during a family holiday in Portugal. In the trial in Brunswick, which started in February, Brueckner faced three charges of aggravated rape and two of sexual abuse of children committed between 2000 and 2017. The disappearance sparked a media frenzy in Britain and Portugal as the McCanns sought publicity to help find their daughter. German police said in June 2020 that McCann was assumed dead and that Brueckner, in his 40s, was likely responsible for it, but they have never brought charges against him.

European markets are heading for a mixed open Tuesday as regional sentiment sours further after a shaky start to the week, with investors watching the conflict in the Middle East closely and its potential impact on oil markets, supply chains and the global economy. Elsewhere overnight, U.S. stock futures were little changed following a losing day on Wall Street Monday as rising oil prices and bond yields weighed on markets. In the Asia-Pacific region, an initial rally for Chinese markets lost steam after a briefing from the country's National Development and Reform Commission provided few details on further stimulus. Earlier, mainland China's CSI 300 index had skyrocketed over 10% at the open at its return from the Golden Week holiday, but the index pared gains later in the session. Key releases for markets this week include U.S. Federal Reserve minutes and German trade on Wednesday, U.S. inflation on Thursday and U.K. economic growth on Friday.

China penalizes European brandy in tit-for-tat response
  + stars: | 2024-10-08 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
An investigation has preliminarily determined that dumping of brandy from the EU is threatening China’s own brandy sector with “substantial damage,” the Chinese Commerce Ministry said. It also accounted for 99% of China’s brandy imports last year, with French brandy shipments reaching $1.7 billion. The Chinese commerce ministry gave no details. Ahead of the vote, in late August, China had suspended its planned anti-dumping measures on EU brandy, in an apparent goodwill gesture, despite determining that EU brandy had been sold in China at below-market prices. At the time, the Commerce Ministry said its probe would end before January 5, 2025, but that it could be extended.

A college degree can help you financially get ahead, compared to a high school diploma alone. Bankrate looked at median salaries among workers and job seekers with at least a bachelor's degree, along with unemployment rates and advanced degree rates, to rank the most and least valuable college degrees. Here are the 10 least valuable college degrees in 2024, according to Bankrate:1. People with bachelor's degrees in less-common foreign languages have a slightly lower unemployment rate, but nearly half (45%) of these grads have advanced degrees. That data suggests an advanced degree — and the years of school required to to earn it — may be needed to to fare better financially in those careers.
