One way is through designing buildings and residences using Passive House standards, a green building-certification program focused on energy efficiency. Developers are interested in how Passive House buildings can help save energy, emit fewer greenhouse gasses, and deliver lower utility bills. A Passive House is more akin to a thermos," Ken Levenson, the executive director of the Passive House Network, a nonprofit that educates the real-estate and construction industry on the standards, said. Passive House standards don't require that electricity come from renewable-energy sources, but they do encourage it, Levenson said. He said there weren't any major cost increases due to designing to Passive House standards.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress have pledged tighter oversight of banking regulators following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Some in Congress are concerned that the Federal Reserve's current inspector general is not independent enough to serve as a check on the central bank. Unlike the Pentagon and other big agencies, the Fed's internal IG, currently Mark Bialek, reports directly to the Fed board. Under the Senators' plans, the holder of the role would instead be appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Specifically, they objected to having the IG's salary tied to the compensation of Fed officials who the IG is tasked with investigating.

To end the war, some argue that Ukraine must make difficult territorial concessions to Russia. People in the United States, after all, do not vote for the president of Russia. The Biden administration has already authorized millions of dollars worth of assets from Russian oligarchs to be transferred to Ukraine. But it has refrained from touching Russia's Central Bank foreign currency reserves, which are estimated to be about $38 billion in the United States alone (and $215 billion in the European Union). As Financial Times economic commentator Martin Sandbu wrote last month, seizing state assets for reparations is an unproven legal strategy.

July 21 (Reuters) - Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) on Friday said it is prepared to meet increased electricity demand in California this summer with new energy supply amid an ongoing heat waveThe company said it is bringing online new resources like battery energy storage, including an additional 700 megawatts (MW) than it had last summer. At the time, PG&E said it had just 6.5 MW of battery energy storage connected to the power grid. By September, it expects to have 1,700 MW online, or enough to meet the demand of 1.2 million homes at once, it said. PG&E said it is modifying programs that offer financial incentives for residential and business customers who reduce energy use during peak demand. PG&E also said it expects to have adequate hydropower to help meet peak summer demand periods.

Just 1% of all US homes changed hands so far this year

Washington, DC CNN —Just 1% of all US homes changed hands in the first half of this year, the lowest share in at least a decade, according to data from Redfin. Just 11 of every 1,000 two-and three-bedroom urban homes have changed hands in 2023. Only 6 of every 1,000 homes in San Jose have sold so far in 2023, similar to the low turnover rates in Oakland and San Diego. The turnover rate shrank most from the pre-pandemic years in the suburbs, with 16 of every 1,000 four-bedroom or more suburban houses changing hands so far this year, two-thirds as many as 2019. That’s not happening, because so many of those homeowners have low mortgage rates.”

July 18 (Reuters) - Credit card company Synchrony Financial (SYF.N) beat second-quarter profit estimates on Tuesday, as the U.S. Federal Reserve's rapid rate hikes helped boost interest earned from borrowers, offsetting a hit from bigger rainy-day funds. Lenders have benefited from the Fed's aggressive monetary policy tightening, but also had to earmark bigger provisions for potential defaults as higher borrowing costs squeezed consumers' financial health. Synchrony reported a profit of $1.32 per share in the reported quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.24, according to Refinitiv IBES data. Net interest income (NII) increased 8.4% to $4.1 billion, helping soften the hit from larger credit loss provisions at $1.38 billion, up from $724 million a year earlier. Total deposits for Synchrony Financial increased 1.8% to $75.77 billion from the first quarter and rose 17% from a year earlier.

While the answer isn't simple, Ford is introducing solutions to turn this grid anxiety into grid confidence. The power of V2GWe are working on turning every Ford EV into a virtual power plant that can be part of a collective power-grid solution. This solution could help mitigate energy shortfalls during peak usage hours when the power grid would be strained. Ford's collaborations with Duke Energy and Pacific Gas and Electric are great examples of how V2G technology can revolutionize the way we consume and distribute energy. We're doing our part at Ford to make these solutions realities — for both the power grid and our customers.

Foxconn withdrew from its semiconductor JV with Indian metals-to-oil conglomerate Vedanta on Monday, in a setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's chipmaking plans for India. "Foxconn is working toward submitting an application," the company said in a statement. The Vedanta-Foxconn joint venture was among three applicants last year under the government's incentives plan. Explaining its breakup with Vedanta, Foxconn said on Tuesday "there was recognition from both sides that the project was not moving fast enough" and there were other "challenging gaps we were not able to smoothly overcome", without sharing more details.

That’s why the regulator is allowing the use of RuPay credit cards, the country’s low-cost answer to Mastercard (MA.N) and Visa (V.N), for UPI payments. Earlier, in June 2022, the central bank had allowed lenders to link RuPay credit cards to UPI accounts. HDFC Bank became the first private bank to go live on UPI with RuPay credit cards in February. And during a later pregnancy she lost a role because it required singing an aria standing on a chair in what would have been her second trimester. When Fuchs announced on social media that she was out of the production, her feed lit up with outrage. He was experimenting to refine the production of al-kohl, a traditional form of eyeliner, according to Arak Muaddi, a Palestinian craft distillery. Nader Muaddi, the founder of Arak Muaddi, explained that producing arak starts with creating wine. The Middle East has “a very rich history of making wine and spirits, and it’s about time that we share it with the world,” Muaddi went on.

What BHP is touting is a process it calls credible and cost-effective, and it's these aims that are worth examining. BHP is the world's biggest miner of coking coal, used to make steel, and ranks third in iron ore, the main steel raw material. Diesel accounts for 76% of the emissions at the iron ore operations in Western Australia state, and 45% at the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance coking coal mines in the northeastern state of Queensland. BHP plans to switch its diesel trucks to battery-powered vehicles, but this will take some time and also involves more than just buying new equipment. The overall message from BHP is that it is advancing plans to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

If financial incumbents want to be part of the modernization of financial markets, they need to adopt blockchains, according to Bernstein. Beyond tradeable assets like bitcoin, however, there's an opportunity over the next five years for financial firms in tokenizing real-world assets on blockchains, the firm said in a note this week. "Tokenization, we believe, will transform financial markets over the next decade," analyst Gautam Chhugani said in the Tuesday note. "We forecast ~$5 trillion of real-world financial assets will be tokenized on blockchains over the next 5 years." There is also a big opportunity for new business verticals in custody, trading, trade finance and enterprise consulting, Chhugani said.

RABAT, June 19 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is working on a platform for central bank digital currencies (CDBCs) to enable transactions between countries, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Monday. "For this reason at the IMF, we are working on the concept of a global CBDC platform," she said. The IMF wants central banks to agree on a common regulatory framework for digital currencies that will allow global interoperability. A CBDC is a digital currency controlled by the central bank, while cryptocurrencies are nearly always decentralised. Already 114 central banks are at some stage of CBDC exploration, "with about 10 already crossing the finish line", she said.
