CNN —Archaeologists have identified the cannibalized remains of a senior officer who perished during an ill-fated 19th century Arctic expedition, offering insight into its lost crew’s tragic and grisly final days. The remains identified as Fitzjames’ in the new study, published September 24 in the Journal of Archaeological Science, were among them. The remains of James Fitzjames, a senior officer who took part in Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Northwest Passage, showed signs of having been cannibalized, a new study said. However, unlike Fitzjames’ remains, Gregory’s bones did not display any cut marks suggestive of cannibalism. Canada’s national parks service and the Inuit communities found the final resting place of the HMS Erebus in 2014 and the HMS Terror in 2016.

The commissioners of MLB, MLS, the NBA, NFL, NHL, NWSL and WNBA, as well as the president of NASCAR, are the brainchildren behind a new campaign to curb hate in America. The Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, founded by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, will back the campaign called “Timeout Against Hate.” Kraft met with the commissioners of the aforementioned sports leagues earlier this year to discuss a potential campaign, and they are committing $50 million to spread the message. “Why in sports do you take a timeout?,” Kraft told NBC News. Last year, Kraft met with more than 80 sports figures to discuss how sports could be used to combat hate in America. The commissioners ultimately gathered in the NFL’s “main conference room,” per Kraft.

Dublin-based Field of Vision has produced a handheld, haptic feedback device that it says can help blind and partially sighted fans not just hear, but “feel” the action, enhancing the live experience. “The main feedback we’ve gotten (about the device) has been that it actually makes them feel like they’re part of the game and they’re experiencing it with everyone else,” Field of Vision co-founder David Deneher told CNN. London CNN —Sixty-five more women have come forward with abuse allegations against the late billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, according to the BBC, following the network’s documentary that detailed testimonies of women who said he sexually assaulted and raped them. Among the dozens of women who contacted the BBC with new accounts of abuse, 37 said they had worked at Harrods, the British broadcaster reported. One said she was assaulted when she was 15 and Al Fayed was 79. Harrods acknowledged that Al Fayed was “intent on abusing his power wherever he operated” and apologized to victims in a statement released at the time. “We are utterly appalled by the allegations of abuse perpetrated by Mohamed Al Fayed,” the company said.

CNN —For the first time in its 147-year history, Wimbledon will be removing line judges from all of its courts during the tournament. The All England Club announced on Wednesday that from the 2025 championships onwards, electronic line calling (ELC) will be used after it was successfully tested in 2024. ELC will replace the line judges who call “out” or “fault” during a match and will also be used in Wimbledon qualifying ahead of the tournament. Wimbledon successfully trialed the technology at this year's championships. Wimbledon’s adoption of the technology leaves the clay-court French Open as the only remaining grand slam yet to implement ELC.

London CNN —An auction house in England has withdrawn human remains, including shrunken heads and ancestral skulls, from sale following an outcry. Other withdrawn lots include an ancestral skull from the Solomon Islands, another from the Fon tribe in Benin and a double ancestor skull from Congo. The planned sale of another piece, described as a 19th-century horned Naga human skull, drew criticism from Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Nagaland. CNN has contacted The Swan auction house, the FNR and the Pitt Rivers Museum for comment. Museum staff removed human remains from its collection of more than 500,000 artifacts, following a three-year review of displays and programming “from an ethical perspective.”Overall, 120 objects containing human remains were removed from view, along with an additional 71 non-biological objects that were in the same displays, the museum told CNN at the time.

San Francisco-based AI startup Writer debuted a large artificial intelligence model Wednesday to compete with enterprise offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic and others. The company cuts costs using synthetic data, or data created by AI. Waseem Alshikh, Writer's co-founder and CTO, told CNBC that Writer has been working on its synthetic data pipeline for years. The generative AI market is poised to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade. To date in 2024, investors have pumped $26.8 billion into 498 generative AI deals, according to PitchBook, and companies in the sector raised $25.9 billion in 2023, up more than 200% from 2022.

With 16 games still remaining before the start of the MLS Cup playoffs, the total has already surpassed the previous record of 10,900,804 set in 2023. At just over 17,000, the average crowd for Inter Miami games, home and away, was the second smallest in the league in 2022. Luis Suárez, Messi’s former teammate at Barcelona, was reunited with the Argentine this year and helped Inter Miami to its first ever Supporters’ Shield in early October.
