Storm surge along the western Florida coast began to pick up as daylight dwindled and Hurricane Milton came ashore with its heavy rains and damaging winds, bringing the threat of major flooding. Flood gauges showed rapidly rising water levels on the coast at Fort Myers and Naples Bay shortly after Milton’s center arrived on land near Sarasota. Forecasters warned of the life threatening surge, which was expected to reach up to 13 feet in some areas, like Boca Grande on the far edges of the western coast. The term storm surge describes the dramatic, higher-than-expected rise in water levels brought on by a storm, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline,” forecasters had earlier warned.

Woodward makes the claims in his forthcoming book, “War,” a dramatic account of the White House under President Joe Biden and Trump that details elements of their relationships with foreign leaders. The book details how Trump’s relationship with Putin has continued as he mounts another bid for the White House and amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The aide, who loitered in a hallway outside while the two spoke, told Woodward that Trump and Putin have had “maybe as many as seven” phone calls since Trump left office in 2021. “But that’s not going to happen, ultimately, not going to happen until President Trump wins on November 5th and it’s clear that he’s coming in,” Miller said, according to the author. New York CNN —Gas stations in many areas of Florida are running out of gasoline, as residents prepare for Hurricane Milton. Gas price tracking service GasBuddy reported that as of Tuesday morning, 14.5% of gas stations statewide were without fuel, a dramatic spike from just 3% on Monday. DeSantis said 27 fuel trucks were escorted by the Florida Highway Patrol to deliver fuel to stations in the anticipated impact area of the storm. “We have been dispatching fuel over the past 24 hours as gas stations have run out,” he said at a press conference early Tuesday. And the real fear is that the hurricane and storm surge could cause significant damage to the port.

Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

Spirit Airlines shares tumbled to a record low on Friday after a report that it's exploring Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. A bankruptcy filing would mark a dramatic turn for the carrier with its iconic yellow planes that caters to budget-conscious travelers. After the JetBlue deal fell apart, Spirit said in January that it was looking at options to refinance its debt.
