The logo of Russian technology giant Yandex is on display at the company's headquarters in Moscow, Russia December 9, 2022. Dutch holding company Yandex NV's planned restructuring is aimed at recouping some shareholder funds with the sale of its main revenue-generating Russian businesses, such as its search and ride-hailing operations. 'CONTROL FOR LESS'Yandex NV may sell 100% of a holding company set up in Russia's Kaliningrad region, said one of the people. Nov 13 (Reuters) - Wall Street is bracing for another quarter of weak sales from U.S. home improvement chains Home Depot (HD.N) and Lowe's (LOW.N) as demand remained under pressure from uneven consumer spending and a subdued housing market. Expectations have been revised roughly 17% lower for Home Depot's same-store sales for the third quarter compared to early September, LSEG data showed, while estimates for Lowe's have come down about 19% during the same period. Key demand indicators - such as category sales figures from the U.S. Census Bureau and home sales - pointed to a sequential softening in the home improvement industry in the quarter, analysts said. "Most likely, a recovery won't be in sight until the second half of 2024," UBS analyst Michael Lasser said. U.S. existing home sales dropped to a 13-year low in September, weighed by rising mortgage rates and tight supply.

Hawkish PowellIn a speech that carried broad hawkish overtones, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank is "not confident" monetary policy is "sufficiently restrictive to bring inflation down to 2 percent." Still, Powell acknowledged there's a "risk of overtightening," and said "monetary policy is generally working the way we think it should work." Stock prices fell in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Mumbai and rose in Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai. U.S. futures slipped and oil prices edged higher. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were also toward the front of the market, each gaining more than 2% as oil prices continued to drop and ease the pressure on fuel costs. A recent sharp drop in oil prices has relieved some inflationary pressure, raising the likelihood the Fed might hold rates steady instead of raising them further. The price for a barrel of U.S. crude oil has fallen from above $90 to back to where it was in July, and it dropped another $2.04 to settle at $75.33 on Wednesday.

If the two cross over, it would form the dreaded "death cross," which can indicate that momentum is weakening or sentiment is souring — and more downside could be on the horizon. It would be the first death cross for the average since late 2022. 'Something bad could happen' The threat of a death cross also underscores challenges specific to the Dow this year. Oppenheimer managing director Ari Wald advised investors to stay away from indexes near or at the death cross like the Dow or the Russell 2000 . Ultimately, technical analysts argue the death cross is both an important yet flawed measure.

The "Magnificent Seven" mega-cap tech names that grab all the headlines and rule Wall Street with their outsized influence have been masking a pretty rough year for everything else. However, under the hood, the S & P 500 index that gives all its stocks the same power may be more reflective of these risks than some strategists are giving them credit for. The S&P 500 is up 7.6% year-to-date. Only about 40% of analyst ratings changes for S&P 500 companies are upgrades. While the S&P 500 is up over 7% this year, Edwards cited it as another data point covering up the economy's true health. Their outsized contribution to the index's performance is evidenced by the returns of the S&P 500 equal-weighted index, Edwards said, which is down by 5% this year. The S&P 500 could fall another 5% to test a critical support level, according to Bank of America. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe S&P 500's 10% decline since the end of July is putting the index within striking distance of a critical technical support level, according to Bank of America. The 200-week moving average measures the average price of the S&P 500 over the past four years, and it's been consistently rising ever since 2012. The S&P 500 has had a tendency to test this line during periods of market stress over the past decade. The S & P 500 closed at its lowest level in five months on Wednesday, a move that could signal further weakness lies ahead. Instead, he would see it as a renewal of the bear market. The S & P 500 also closed back below its 200-day moving average on Wednesday. His question now is if the market once again goes into a true bear market. A Wall Street sign is pictured outside the New York Stock Exchange in New York, October 28, 2013. Wall Street’s most closely-watched measure of investor nervousness, the Cboe Volatility Index (.VIX), on Friday hit its highest in nearly seven months, as the S&P 500 slid for the week. That has left investors piling into other traditional safe-haven assets such as the dollar and gold, as well as short-term debt. Rising bond yields have dampened risk appetite, raising the cost of capital for companies and offering investment competition to stocks. Geopolitical uncertainties, climbing bond yields and the risk of more losses in stocks means "investors face fresh uncertainties," they wrote.
