REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit against Alphabet Inc's Google (GOOGL.O) that was brought late last year by the Republican National Committee for allegedly sending its emails to users' spam folders. "Accordingly, the Court will GRANT Defendant's Motion to Dismiss, with partial leave to amend," the judge wrote. Lawyers for Google at law firm Perkins called the allegations a "far-fetched theory" and a "dark conspiracy." Spam filters on email services typically weed out unsolicited "spam" messages and divert them to a separate folder.

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis listens to a question from the audience at a campaign town hall meeting in Newport, New Hampshire, U.S., August 19, 2023. In Trump's absence, candidates are expected to launch a fusillade of attacks on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, as competitors try to displace him as Trump's top challenger, according to strategists and aides to rival campaigns. DeSantis is seen as vulnerable after a summer slide in the polls, which have left him languishing more than 30 points behind Trump in the race. "He's going to be a punching bag," said Brian Darling, a Republican strategist and former senior aide to U.S. Still, Trump's no-show doesn't mean he won't be a major presence in the debate, which kicks off at the Fiserv Forum at 9 p.m.

LONDON, Aug 23 (Reuters) - The United States and China may feel some financial detente is wise at this point - even if goading one another plays well domestically. But elements of the once-feared bind of 'mutally-assured financial destruction' (MAFD) still apply. The former president dominates the field, with his indictments in four separate criminal cases boosting his popularity among Republican voters, and has said there is little political upside for him to debate his rivals. The Art Deco facade of the original Toronto Stock Exchange building is seen on Bay Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada January 23, 2019. The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index (.GSPTSE) ended down 33.52 points, or 0.2%, at 19,784.87, its lowest closing level since June 27. "Interest rates continue to climb, which is something negative for the TSX which is littered with dividend payers," said Barry Schwartz, a portfolio manager at Baskin Financial Services. Stocks paying high dividends dominate the real estate, utilities and financials sectors. Shares of Restaurant Brands International (QSR.TO) gained 0.9% after J.P.Morgan initiated coverage on the stock with an "overweight" rating.

The logo for Goldman Sachs is seen on the trading floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, New York, U.S., November 17, 2021. The purchase was aimed at broadening Goldman's client list beyond the ultra-rich, but the unit has remained a small part of the bank's wealth business. High net worth individuals - who would fall within the business Goldman is considering selling - typically have about $1 million to $10 million to invest. Goldman's wealth business has lagged behind rivals, including Morgan Stanley (MS.N), where CEO James Gorman built the wealth management arm through a series of acquisitions that generate steady income from fees. The bank plans to grow its core wealth business serving ultra-high-net-worth clients, reiterating aspirations from its investor day in late February.

TOKYO, Aug 22 (Reuters) - North Korea has said it will launch a satellite between Aug. 24-31 in the direction of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, the Japanese Coast Guard said on Tuesday. The Coast Guard added that the satellite, if launched, was likely to fall outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone. North Korea launched a satellite on May 31 that ended up plunging into the sea. The new "Chollima-1" satellite launch rocket failed because of instability in the engine and fuel system, state news agency KCNA reported. It prompted emergency alerts and brief evacuation warnings in parts of South Korea and Japan but no danger or damage was reported.

Alcaraz to face Djokovic for Cincinnati title

Hurkacz, who narrowly lost to Alcaraz in the quarters of the Canadian Open, raced out to a 3-0 lead as Alcaraz mixed dazzling shotmaking with some head-scratching errors in the entertaining first set. Hurkacz captured the opener when he broke Alcaraz for a second time and had match point in the second set while returning serve and leading 5-4 but misfired on a forehand. Alcaraz drew Hurkacz to the net with a drop shot and then fired a sensational cross court winner to set up the tiebreak. A perfectly executed volley on his first match point delivered Alcaraz into his eighth final of the year and despite spending more than 10 hours on the court this week, he said he feels fresh. Djokovic, who won the Masters 1000 tournament in 2018 and 2020, has played Alcaraz three times.

Turkey begins rolling back costly FX-protected deposits
  + stars: | 2023-08-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
In a reversal, the central bank now wants lenders to set a new goal of transitioning KKM accounts into regular lira accounts, in part by dissuading companies and individuals from renewing the KKM accounts. According to a separate decree in the Official Gazette, the central bank also raised lenders' reserve requirement ratios for FX deposits, further nudging customers into regular lira accounts. KKM accounts have since ballooned to some $117 billion, or 3.1 trillion lira, around a quarter of total bank deposits. To cover KKM depreciation costs, the central bank paid an estimated 300 billion lira ($11 billion) in June and July, when the lira plunged again. The central bank said the KKM move would "enforce macro financial stability by supporting lira deposits" and pledged more such steps.

Normally, Fed officials would be expected to see that sort of economic strength as a reason inflation might stay high and require further rate increases. "It may take sustained higher 10-year yields to slow the economy and the housing sector in particular to re-attain 2% target inflation," wrote economists from Citi.
