Reactions to the indictment of Donald Trump

June 8 (Reuters) - Here are reactions after former President Donald Trump said he has been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice, apparently for mishandling sensitive government documents. "We are blessed with a legal system that is designed to vindicate the robust rights of all defendants, and just like any other criminal defendant, Donald Trump has long-standing constitutional rights to a trial by jury, to confront his accusers, and to legal counsel." TESLA CEO ELON MUSK: "There does seem to be far higher interest in pursuing Trump compared to other people in politics. VIVEK RAMASWAMY, CANDIDATE FOR REPUBLICAN NOMINATION:"It would be much easier for me to win this election if Trump weren’t in the race, but I stand for principles over politics. I commit to pardon Trump promptly on January 20, 2025, and to restore the rule of law in our country."

For his rivals, though, the campaign has been frozen in place, with Trump again seizing the spotlight and relegating them to supporting roles. So when word of the indictment broke, DeSantis sprinted to Trump’s corner – along with the loyalists he is ultimately hoping will break for him. Look, look at this.”Among the 2024 field, DeSantis and longshot primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy emerged overnight as Trump’s most ardent defenders. Ahead of a new ad launch, its first of the 2024 primary, a senior adviser to the group said the new indictment furthered Christie’s political case against Trump. “While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction,” Hutchinson said.

"The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society," DeSantis, who is running a distant second behind Trump in the polls, wrote on Twitter. Scott, who is polling in the single digits, also criticized what he called the "weaponization" of federal prosecutors. A spokesperson for Special Counsel Jack Smith, the Justice Department official who is handling the investigation, declined to comment. Rivals are wary of angering Trump's base, which is thought to make up 30% of the Republican electorate and is largely unshakeable in support for Trump. If the indictments pile up, Coughlin predicts the other Republican candidates will start to argue that Trump cannot win the general election.

In a video posted on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, he reiterated previous assertions that the Justice Department has been weaponized for political ends. But he has shied away from promoting more aggressive reforms at the Justice Department. If I had to sum up the current debate within the American right, I’d describe it as a contest between liberty and authority. The dispute between liberty and authority has become a subtext of the Republican presidential primary. It also respects the free speech rights of students and the academic freedom of professors, so that the state doesn’t become the final arbiter of truth. The authority side, by contrast, believes that someone’s worldview will control our schools, so it should be theirs. laws and other educational gag orders, which attempt to tightly regulate instruction about race, gender, and sexual orientation in public schools.

Britain's advertising regulator has banned an ad campaign promoting the green initiatives of Shell, saying the marketing of the oil giant's lower emissions energy products was "likely to mislead" consumers. All published in 2022, the ads sought to raise awareness of the range of Shell's energy products under a campaign tagline of "The U.K. is ready for cleaner energy." The Advertising Standards Authority said Tuesday that, following an investigation, it had concluded that the ad campaign may lead people to overestimate the firm's investment in clean energy. "We strongly disagree with the ASA's decision, which could slow the UK's drive towards renewable energy," a company spokesperson said. The ASA ruling noted that Shell believed the ads "accurately represented" the range of lower emissions energy products and services it offers and that any mention of the firm's high-carbon products would have been "counterproductive."

CNN —Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Wednesday he was “wrong” about former President Donald Trump, whom he twice supported and advised ahead of the 2020 election. Christie told Tapper that 2024 is a different atmosphere from 2016, when Christie first ran against Trump and Trump cruised to the nomination by splitting a crowded field. This time, Christie argued, Trump has a political record to run against. Reacting to a Trump video mocking his weight, Christie said, “It just renewed in my own mind what a child he is.

June 22 (Reuters) - At least 10 Republican candidates have announced that they will try to win their party's nomination to take on Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 2024 election. DONALD TRUMPTrump, 77, announced his election campaign last November as he faced criticism from within his Republican Party over his support for far-right candidates who were defeated in the midterm elections. Like Biden, the former president remains unpopular with swaths of the electorate. DOUG BURGUMDoug Burgum, who is serving his second four-year term as North Dakota's governor, launched his campaign earlier this month. CNN —Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie filed to run for president on Tuesday ahead of announcing his second bid for the White House and kicking off another clash with former President Donald Trump, the GOP frontrunner and a former Christie ally. Both would eventually drop out – Christie after he finished sixth in the New Hampshire primary – and endorse Trump. “We keep losing and losing and losing,” Christie said at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership conference late last year. “No way.”Christie was first elected New Jersey governor in 2009, unseating Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine.

CNN —The Republican presidential field is growing almost by the day, but no candidate has yet offered an effective answer to GOP primary voters on the race’s most compelling question – why they should ditch Donald Trump. Nikki Haley has been on the trail for weeks, appearing in a CNN town hall on Sunday in Iowa. No Republican voters will weigh in for at least six months in early state contests. There’s even less evidence that GOP voters believe that Trump’s legal problems disqualify him from serving as their nominee. In an NBC News poll in April, 68% of Republican voters believed that investigations into Trump were politically motivated attempts to stop him.

That would allow the former president to clinch the nomination, just as he did in similar circumstances in 2016. Political analysts estimate that Trump can count on a diehard core of supporters, who make up at least a third of Republican voters, to help him secure his party's nomination. Trump dominates the field among potential Republican primary voters with 49% support and DeSantis next with 19%. Many may have also decided to enter the 2024 race because of the perceived vulnerabilities of the two front runners, Feehery said.

Former Vice President Mike Pence is runnning for president. Pence was loyal to Trump during most of his presidency, but stood up to him on January 6. By entering the race, Pence will officially challenge former President Donald Trump — a man he publicly stood by throughout his presidency, right up until Trump pressured him to subvert Joe Biden's 2020 election win. DeSantis has criticized Trump's response to the pandemic, though Trump handed the reins of the response to Pence during his tenure. Pence was deeply involved in the Trump administration, with his fingerprints especially visible on healthcare policy and on defending religious groups.

This week, two candidates officially joined the Republican presidential field: Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Gov. All told, the Republican presidential field might end up almost as large and divided as the one in 2016. Which is to say that the 2024 Republican primary is, at this stage, shaping up to be a retread of the one that catapulted Trump to the commanding heights of the American political system. Once again, it is clear that many Republican elites would prefer to have someone other than Trump at the top of the ticket. As of Friday, he is far behind Trump in nearly every major poll of the national Republican primary electorate.
