A Philippine supply boat sails near a Chinese Coast Guard ship during a resupply mission for Filipino troops stationed at a grounded warship in the South China Sea, October 4, 2023. REUTERS/Adrian Portugal/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMANILA, Nov 11 (Reuters) - The Philippines' coast guard said on Saturday it would maintain its regular supply missions to troops stationed on a disputed atoll in the South China Sea even though it expects more Chinese vessels to be sent to the area. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal, and has deployed hundreds of vessels to patrol there. "We are still going to carry out these dangerous missions despite our limited number of vessels and despite the increasing number of Chinese vessels they are going to deploy," Philippine coast guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela told a press conference. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has pursued warmer ties with Washington, reversing the pro-China stance of his predecessor and leading to a rise in tension in the South China Sea.

CNN —Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was ejected from Wednesday’s 120-118 win over the Detroit Pistons for “two unsportsmanlike technical fouls,” before the ‘Greek Freak’ gave some fans quite the unique experience. He had received the initial technical foul in the first quarter for using profanity towards the referees. “And he was ejected from the game, per rule, because two unsportsmanlike technical fouls, you are ejected from the game.”The official National Basketball Association (NBA) rulebook says: “If a player blatantly taunts an opponent, a technical foul shall be assessed. The ejection also drew headlines given the NBA’s recent commitment to ensuring its star players are on the court as much as possible. Before his ejection, Antetokounmpo contributed 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Election workers process ballots after polls closed for the U.S. midterm elections at the tabulation center at Cobb County Elections and Registration Center in Marietta, Georgia, U.S., November 8, 2022. WASHINGTON — Physical and cyber threats against election workers are driving people away from the industry, potentially endangering the ability of states to conduct off-year elections like those on Tuesday, and the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Some election experts and secretaries of state said the threats have trended upward since former President Donald Trump and his allies allegedly attempted to undermine, then overthrow, the results of the 2020 presidential election. Witnesses urged senators to invest in protections for election workers ahead of the 2024 presidential election. In recent years, election officials have endured death threats, online harassment and other abusive behavior, according to the Brennan Center.

Dollar extends drop, still vulnerable after Fed

The dollar index was hovering around a 6-1/2 week low of 104.84, after falling around 1.4% last week. "You could still see a somewhat weaker dollar in the short-term, but if the (euro-dollar) rally continues it needs to get some fuel from somewhere." JPMorgan analysts say a sustained dollar sell-off would need signs of improvement in the euro zone, China and other regions, which it says are "still tenuous". The latest growth and inflation data from the euro zone and manufacturing surveys from China bear that out. Euro zone recession fears hardened on Monday after a survey showed a downturn in business activity accelerated last month as demand in the services sector weakened further.

Authorities have not disclosed any of Hale's journals or writings that were collected after the March 27 shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville. Police then reversed course, saying that because of the lawsuits they would await the direction of the court on whether to release Hale’s writings. “I am deeply concerned with the safety, security, and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillians who are grieving," O’Connell said. Attorneys representing families with the Covenant School have repeatedly said they have not seen Hale's writings. Euro zone recession fears harden

LONDON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - The downturn in euro zone business activity accelerated last month as demand in the dominant services industry weakened further, a survey showed on Monday, suggesting there is a growing chance of a recession in the 20-country currency union. The economy contracted 0.1% in the third quarter, official data has shown, and Monday's final Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for October indicated the bloc entered the final quarter of 2023 on the back foot. Services activity in Germany, Europe's largest economy, slipped back into contraction in October amid persistent weakness in demand while in France it shrank again. In another bright spot, investor morale in the euro zone rose more than expected at the start of November, with expectations for the future at their rosiest since early this year, Sentix's index showed on Monday. Policymakers there, who have failed to get inflation to target, will likely take some cheer from easing price pressures shown in the PMI survey, as both the input and output prices indexes fell from their September readings.

CNN —A wave of departures by election officials in key states risks adding new stress to the nation’s election system ahead of next year’s presidential contest, voting rights groups and several state election chiefs warn. The growing alarm over the resignations and retirements comes as officials say election workers continue to face a barrage of threats and harassment and partisan interference in their duties, first ignited by false claims of a stolen White House election in 2020. In King County, Washington – which includes Seattle – Julie Wise, the county election director, recalled receiving a letter over the summer with a rant about elections. Election watchdogs say more action is needed – including boosting federal funding and extending a federal law that criminalizes the release of restricted personal information about federal workers to cover election officials. Brinson Bell began tracking the departures when she became the state’s election chief that year.

Shakespeare’s First Folio Turns 400
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Now known as the First Folio, that volume has become a lodestone of Shakespeare scholarship over the centuries, offering the most definitive versions of his work along with clues to his process and plenty of disputes about authorship and intention. In honor of its 400th anniversary, the British Library and Rizzoli recently released a facsimile version of the First Folio. On this week’s episode, The Times’s critic at large Sarah Lyall talks with Adrian Edwards, head of the library’s Printed Heritage Collections, about Shakespeare’s work, the library’s holdings and the cultural significance of that original volume. “If we didn’t have the First Folio, given that all the manuscript versions of the plays are lost, we wouldn’t have plays such as ‘The Tempest’ or ‘Twelfth Night’ or ‘A Winter’s Tale’ or ‘Julius Caesar’ or ‘Antony Cleopatra’ or ‘Macbeth,’” Edwards says.
