That improvement in the bioprocessing end market is super important because it has been a huge overhang for Danaher shares, and the life sciences space in general. We were concerned about the bioprocessing market after rival Sartorius cut its guidance last week. The management team has effectively navigated the bioprocessing slowdown better than others and kept expectations managed — a big reason we've stuck by the stock during a difficult few quarters. Based on these strong results and the improving bioprocessing market, we are raising our price target to $295 from $280 and reiterating our 1 rating. All three operating segments are expected to post sales decline rates in the low single digits.

Strong numbers in the company's search and cloud businesses more than offset the slight misses in the YouTube and network units. Cloud recorded a couple of big firsts: exceeding $10 billion in revenue, along with $1 billion in operating income. Whereas investors were — and many still are — concerned about what generative AI might mean for Alphabet's search revenue, the opposite appears to be the case, at least for now. Google Cloud revenue grew roughly 28% to more than $10 billion for the first time. Activist Commentary: Starboard is a very successful activist investor and has extensive experience helping companies focus on operational efficiency and margin improvement. On July 15, Starboard sent a letter to Match highlighting various opportunities to improve operations, financial results and capital allocation. Match's EBITDA margin of 36% may be high for an average company, but it's low for a company like Match. Starboard thinks that this is a highly valuable asset that may be well-suited to operate as a private company. Starboard is not the first activist to launch a public campaign at Match.

With so much riding on your credit score, it's important to understand what counts as a good credit score and how to get one. Last month, more than 5.7 million 16- to 19-year-olds participated in the labor market, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows, marking the highest teen employment rate in June since 2007. Economists say more teens have been drawn to the workforce because of a hot labor market with more attractive wages. And as long as the economy stays strong, experts aren't expecting a dip in teen employment on the horizon. Economists say the overall direction teen employment takes depends heavily on where the economy is headed. A perfect storm of a tight labor market, rising wages, high education costs and curbed immigration could result in continued higher youth employment, Nestler said.

United Airlines ' second-quarter profit rose more than 20% from last year as strong demand for international travel boosted the carrier's results, but its third-quarter forecast came in shy of estimates as an oversupply of flights weighs on fares. United and Delta Air Lines , which also disappointed with its third-quarter guidance, have still been standouts in the U.S. airline industry. The company expanded domestic flying by more than 5% in the second quarter over last year, and unit revenues fell more than 1% over last year. On Tuesday, Spirit Airlines cut its second-quarter forecast, citing weaker-than-expected revenue for fees like seating or luggage. Southwest Airlines and American Airlines , which report results on July 25, previously reduced their second-quarter estimates.

After First Horizon posted an earnings miss Wednesday morning, the regional bank's CEO Bryan Jordan told CNBC's Jim Cramer there is stiff competition in the industry that could continue for the rest of the year. It tends to be very aggressive for money market and CD deposit rates," Jordan said. "We see a lot of specials in the marketplace, and what we experienced this quarter was a little bit of a shift in what we'd seen in previous quarters." Jordan continued, saying this competition "drove a little bit of an increase in costs," as First Horizon matched rates for customers, raising the cost of deposits. "I think when those two questions get resolved, the economy ought to star to accelerate, loan demand ought to pick up a little bit," he said.

Yen jumps on suspected intervention, sterling hits one-year high
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The yen rose sharply on Wednesday in what traders suspected was likely the result of yet another intervention from Japanese authorities to prop up the battered currency from multidecade lows. The euro was last down 0.8% at 171.15 yen, while sterling fell 0.76% to 203.75 yen. Combined with the estimated amount spent a day earlier, Japan is suspected to have bought nearly 6 trillion yen via intervention last week. That sent traders paring back bets of a rate cut from the Bank of England in August, providing a small boost to sterling , which was last up 0.43% to $1.3029. But the more important data is the inflation data, and that's telling the market that the Fed is in a position to cut fairly soon."

Sterling rose slightly shortly after the release, trading at $1.2977 by 7:21 a.m. London time. Services inflation — which is closely watched by the BOE, given its dominance within the U.K. economy and its reflection of domestically-generated price rises — remained at 5.7% in June.
