New Delhi CNN —From butter chicken to paneer makhani, Indian cuisine is unthinkable without the ubiquitous tomato. Asha, a homemaker in the capital who asked to be referred to only by her first name, told CNN the increase has hit her seven-member family hard. Some of McDonald’s (MCD) restaurants across the country have temporarily stopped serving tomatoes on their burgers, citing quality issues and shortages of supply. Of the tomatoes that were harvested, over 90% were infected by seed-born viruses, Gadve told CNN, which further exacerbated the supply shortage. Devinder Sharma, an India-based agriculture policy expert, told CNN the current shortage was also caused in part by farmers throwing away their tomatoes because no one was buying them.

Without following the words, it would be nearly impossible to have any idea what was going on in this non-narrative but intensely text-focused work. The attempt to tie together the work’s many thematic strands by enacting onstage what Hearne’s program note called “a new corporation, powered by quasi-religious fervor,” was confusing — though maybe things were clearer in the original, outdoor conception. The central pairing of Penn and Bezos, the two pioneers — their vast differences, their essential similarities — would probably have been a more than sufficient subject here. To what extent are Bezos’s manipulative doublespeak and high-minded invocations of empowerment through selling a break with Penn’s colonial promises? To what degree are they merely a continuation of what were sour lies to begin with?

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuters) - The World Bank on Monday named 15 chief executive officers including financiers and asset managers to a group launched by the lender's president, Ajay Banga, aiming to marshal more private capital to combat climate change and boost investment in developing countries. Banga announced the initiative at a global finance summit in Paris last month alongside Mark Carney, the U.N. special envoy on climate action, and Shriti Vadera, chair of Prudential Plc (PRU.L). The World Bank and the CEOs will work "to develop, test, implement and ultimately scale financing structures that can most effectively mobilize private capital," Carney said in a statement. He said in a statement that the Private Investment Lab CEOs were a "crucial piece of the puzzle" to devise ways to pull more private sector investment into the intertwined challenges of poverty, climate and fragility. The government blames the higher prices of tomatoes on a lean production season when monsoon rains disrupt transport and distribution, but it comes after consumers have battled higher prices of items ranging from milk to spices in recent months. "Despite our best efforts, we are not able to get adequate quantities of tomatoes which pass our stringent quality checks," read notices posted in two McDonald's stores in New Delhi, the capital. The problem was seasonal and forced 10% to 15% of its stores to stop serving tomatoes temporarily, it said. McDonald's Delhi stores still offer sachets of tomato ketchup, however, and a nearby Subway restaurant said there were no issues serving tomatoes. "Tomato prices running high?

It is a new challenge for formerly government-owned Air India, which Tata Group took over last year. The CCI, Air India and Vistara did not immediately respond to requests for comment. To address the CCI's concerns, Air India could make concessions such as giving up certain routes or reducing frequency, the second source said, adding that Air India remains confident the matter can be resolved by recommending certain changes. Vistara and Air India both fly on international routes such as London and Dubai and would need antitrust clearances in other jurisdictions, the first source said. Air India is expecting similar queries from foreign countries once it applies for clearance there, but is waiting for the India process to first close, the source added.

Tengbeh Kamara/Greenpeace/Handout via REUTERSAMSTERDAM, June 24 (Reuters) - Hundreds of environmental activists wearing red jumpsuits marched with flags and banners on Saturday into the grounds of Tata Steel's plant in the Dutch city of Ijmuiden to protest over air and soil pollution in the surrounding area. Led by Greenpeace, the activists were joined by local residents who say the Indian company's facility in the coastal city is responsible for high levels of heavy metals in nearby soils. One group of protesters used boats to hang a banner reading "Tata Steel, You Sicken Us" at the port where the facility receives coal and iron ore. The facility is under scrutiny by environmental agencies and prosecutors are investigating alleged intentional pollution of nearby groundwater, which Tata denies.

June 22 (Reuters) - IT consulting firm Accenture forecast fourth-quarter revenue below Wall Street estimates on Thursday on worries that rising economic uncertainty will keep IT budgets tight and prevent businesses from signing fresh contracts. Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH.O) last month said it faced pressure in signing smaller contracts due to softer discretionary spending. Accenture forecast current-quarter revenue in the range of $15.75 billion to $16.35 billion. Accenture's new bookings, or deals in the pipeline, grew 2% to $17.2 billion in the third quarter. Revenue for the quarter ended May 31 was $16.56 billion, in line with estimates.

Indian citizens are by far the most active users of the U.S. H-1B program and made up 73% of the nearly 442,000 H-1B workers in fiscal year 2022. Plans for a pilot program were first reported by Bloomberg Law in February. Each year, the U.S. government makes 65,000 H-1B visas available to companies seeking skilled foreign workers, along with an additional 20,000 visas for workers with advanced degrees. The pilot program would also include some workers with L-1 visas, which are available to people transferring within a company to a position in the U.S., one of the sources said. India has long had concerns with the difficulty its citizens face in receiving visas to live in the United States, including technology industry workers.

India's TCS signs $1.1 bln contract with UK's Nest
  + stars: | 2023-06-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BENGALURU, June 21 (Reuters) - India's top IT services provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.NS) said on Wednesday that it has signed a new contract worth 840 million pounds ($1.1 billion) with British pension scheme Nest for an initial tenure of 10 years. The contract, to help Nest transform its administration services, if extended to the entirety of its 18-year tenure would be worth 1.5 billion pounds, TCS said in a statement. The deal comes at a time when Indian IT services companies are facing demand challenges in their key markets, the United States and Europe, where clients have cut spends amid worries about recession. TCS and Nest have been working together since 2011. Last week, TCS mutually terminated a $2 billion contract with insurance provider Transamerica, citing reasons that include a challenging macro environment.

But it was surpassed on day one of the Paris show by Indian rival IndiGo's (INGL.NS) order for 500 Airbus narrowbody jets. Air India said it was worth $70 billion at list prices, though airlines typically get discounts on big orders worth at least half the headline price, analysts say. The Airbus part comprises 210 A320neo and A321neo narrowbody jets and 40 A350 widebodies. "Our ambitious fleet renewal and expansion programme will see Air India operate the most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft across our route network within five years," Air India Chief Executive Campbell Wilson said in a statement. The mega-order will also put Air India on a stronger footing to compete with budget rival IndiGo, which has a majority share of the Indian market and a strong position in regional flights.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is scheduled to meet India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in New York during Modi's visit to the United States, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Musk and Modi are expected to discuss Tesla's ambitions in the country, setting up a manufacturing base and possible incentives for battery production. Tesla has discussed operating in India in the past, but so far hasn't reached an agreement there. Tesla's largest manufacturing base outside the U.S. is in China, and it's also working on a major facility outside Berlin. While India is widely seen as a growth market for the broader automotive industry, the International Energy Agency projects electric car sales still represent a small share of the global market.

LONDON, June 19 (Reuters) - JLR said on Monday it has partnered with supply chain mapping and risk analytics firm Everstream Analytics, which will embed artificial intelligence into the British luxury carmaker's system to help avert future global supply issues. The new AI technology, JLR said, will allow it to monitor its supply chain in real-time and protect the production of its current models and next generation of electric vehicles (EVs). JLR, a unit of India's Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) said Everstream's technology has already enabled it to avoid disruption at global freight ports to deliver vehicles to clients. In a post-pandemic world full of supply chain snarls, a growing group of startups and established logistics firms have created a multi-billion dollar industry to apply AI and machine learning to help businesses minimise disruption. JLR was hit particularly hard by a global shortage of semiconductor chips that forced major carmakers to curtail production of certain models.

BENGALURU, June 16 (Reuters) - Indian information technology (IT) company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.NS) said on Friday it has mutually agreed with insurance provider Transamerica to end a $2 billion contract, citing reasons including a challenging macro environment. The 10-year contract, signed in early 2018, involved TCS working with U.S.-based Transameria to enable the digitization of more than 10 million policies into a single integrated platform. Administration of those policies, including life insurance and retirement and investment solutions, will be moved to a new servicing model, which will take about 30 months, TCS said. "It's more of a sentimental negative rather than a big impact on the financials of TCS," said Siddhartha Khemka, head of retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest IT firm, saw more female employees quit the past year. The company said it felt this change was influenced by its decision to scrap remote work. India's largest IT firm faced an unexpected consequence after scrapping its remote working policies: seeing a higher level of female employees quit. There are over 220,000 women at the firm, making up about 35.7% of the company's workforce according to the report. A YouGov poll last year found that 57% of working women in the US said that remote working is important in a job, versus 44% of men.

A series of bold investmentsExperts say much of India’s outbound growth trajectory is being driven by improvements in infrastructure and an expansion in its aviation sector. Morgenshtern says the rise in outbound tourism from India is the result of investment not just by the government but by private airlines as well. Air India, for example, is fully owned by Indian conglomerate Tata Sons. As part of its efforts to expand its offerings, the company announced earlier this year it will be operating flights under both the Air India brand and Air India Express, having previously merged the latter with Tata’s other low-cost airline, AirAsia India. In February, Air India purchased nearly 500 new planes, the most ever bought in one order by a single airline.

There are pockets of optimism elsewhere in the services sector - especially in accounting, where there is a surge in hiring. NLB sees a 20-25% drop in IT employee additions in the first half of the current financial year, while TeamLease Digital expects a 40% decrease for the entire year. Nasscom declined comment on the hiring slowdown. That has "surely left applicants concerned about future prospects", said staffing firm Xpheno's co-founder Kamal Karanth, who highlighted how current hiring activity was "under a third of what was recorded in the buoyant peak".
