[1/8] Golf - The Masters - Augusta National Golf Club - Augusta, Georgia, U.S. - April 3, 2023 Scottie Scheffler of the U.S. in action on the 12th hole during a practice round REUTERS/Brian SnyderAUGUSTA, Georgia, April 3 (Reuters) - Five storylines to follow as the best players in the world descend upon Augusta National Golf Club this week for the April 6-9 Masters. SCHEFFLER SEEKS RARE REPEATWorld number one Scottie Scheffler, who arrived at Augusta National last year as the hottest player on the planet, returns in top form and looking to become only the fourth player to successfully defend a Masters title. No player has won the Masters in consecutive years since Tiger Woods accomplished the feat in 2001-02 and prior to that only Nick Faldo (1989-90) and Jack Nicklaus (1965-66) have pulled off the Augusta double. Among those competing will be a prominent group of LIV Golf players that, in addition to British Open winner Cameron Smith, include former Masters champions Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson and Charl Schwartzel. The hole has played to an historical scoring average of 4.77 that makes it the easiest hole at Augusta National.
After signing up with the Saudi backed LIV circuit, some members delighted in taking shots at the PGA Tour as they left their old work place. "If one wants to stop and ask why I'm picking on them, then I'm all for it," said Couples after his Monday practice round. "I just don't think they should bash the PGA Tour or anybody, just go play golf." Three-times Masters champion Phil Mickelson and 2017 Green Jacket winner Sergio Garcia have both been critical of the PGA Tour and the target of Couples' barbs. Speaking at a Champions Tour breakfast, Couples took a shot at Mickelson and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund that is bankrolling the LIV Tour.
Scottie Scheffler reacts during the final round of the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. The battle for the future of golf between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has also been a clash over how tournaments are played. Now the PGA Tour is adopting a series of changes that happen to include some of the untraditional formats used by its Saudi-backed rival. In a memo sent to players Wednesday and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, commissioner Jay Monahan said the Tour is going forward with a “Designated Event Model” to highlight certain tournaments. Those select events will include a couple of notable features: smaller fields of only 70-80 players and no cut to reduce the field after 36 holes.

[1/3] Feb 19, 2023; Pacific Palisades, California, USA; Jon Rahm reacts following his victory in the final round of The Genesis Invitational golf tournament. Spaniard Rahm, 28, made two late birdies to close with a two-under 69 for a two-shot win over home favourite Homa, finishing at 17-under for his 10th PGA Tour title and a fifth win in his last nine tournaments worldwide. "I don't need a ranking to validate anything," said Rahm, who was last ranked at number one in March 2022. "That was a tough week and a tough Sunday. "My streak continues here," said Woods, who has played at the Riviera course 12 times without winning.
"I don't know what that reaction is going to be," said Woods, who will tee it up at the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational this week. "I know that some of our friendships have certainly taken a different path, but we'll see when all that transpires. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka are among the big names who have left the PGA Tour for the lucrative, Saudi-backed LIV Golf. While banned from PGA Tour events, LIV players have been invited to compete at the Masters. Woods called world number one Rory McIlroy the PGA Tour's "ambassador" and said he had been extraordinary at navigating the new, and at times hostile, terrain.
Feb 13 (Reuters) - Scottie Scheffler knocked Rory McIlroy off the top of the world rankings on Sunday after the Masters champion retained his Phoenix Open title in Arizona. Scheffler carded a final round of six-under-par 65 for a 19 under total to claim his fifth PGA Tour title and regain the number one ranking he had held for 30 weeks until October. Scheffler, who took the $3.6 million top prize, won his first PGA Tour title in Phoenix to kick off a run of four wins in six starts. The American won his first major at Augusta National last April and was voted PGA Tour Player of the Year. Spaniard Jon Rahm, who also had a chance to become number one with a win on Sunday, was third at 14-under after closing with a 68, while McIlroy carded a 70 to finish joint 32nd on four under for the tournament.
But members gathered here at the party’s winter meeting say that once all the votes are counted, the tensions are unlikely to quickly subside. McDaniel and Dhillon supporters who spoke with NBC News acknowledged Dhillon is facing tough odds to unseat McDaniel. For nearly two months, RNC members, particularly those backing McDaniel, have been inundated with emails from Dhillon supporters pleading with them to back the insurgent candidacy. “He’s very well thought of and carries a lot of weight here,” Bill Palatucci, an RNC committeeman from New Jersey who is backing Dhillon, told NBC News. Regardless, he expressed concern that most RNC members were choosing to ignore the grassroots backlash to another McDaniel term.
WASHINGTON — There is a deepening crack in Donald Trump's bond with conservative faith voters that potential rivals for the 2024 GOP nomination see as an opportunity. And Pence is expected to speak to faith voters in the coming weeks in Houston, Miami, Naples, Fla., and New York City. "For all the blocs of [GOP] voters, losing the 2020 election took the shine off of Donald Trump," the adviser said. Those are the types of things that I think lose your credibility with the evangelical community and conservative voters writ large." That should give hopefuls and faith voters a chance to get a better feel for one another.
Surging towards an emphatic victory at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship – the PGA Tour Champions season finale – drinks were already set to flow for the Irishman, but Harrington seemed determined to start the party early. Approaching one fan at the sideline, Harrington handed over a wad of cash – to be spent specifically on beers. In May, Justin Thomas admitted to being blown away by the eye-watering $18 price of beer at the PGA Championship in Tulsa, and it seems similar calculations were on Harrington’s mind in Arizona. In carding 27-under, the Irishman matched the PGA Tour Champions record score in relation to par, equaling Jack Nicklaus’ effort at the Kaulig Companies Championship in 1990. Nov 9 (Reuters) - Former world number one Tiger Woods said on Wednesday he would be returning to play in this year's Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Woods said on Twitter he would be in the field for the annual charity tournament he hosts along with fellow American Kevin Kisner and Briton Tommy Fleetwood. loadingThe 46-year-old Woods has played in three majors this year after sustaining serious injuries in a car crash in February 2021. Woods withdrew in pain from the PGA Championship after the third round and missed the cut at the British Open in July. The field for the Dec. 1-4 Hero World Challenge includes seven top-10 players in the rankings, led by Masters winner and world number two Scottie Scheffler.
CNN —When Rory McIlroy won the 2021 CJ Cup, he insisted he was still capable of being the world’s best golfer. It marks the ninth occasion the 33-year-old McIlroy has held top spot in his career, with only Tiger Woods and Greg Norman – both 11-time No. Then ranked 8th in the world, McIlroy had given a tearful interview following Europe’s historic 19-9 loss at Whistling Straits, arguing he “should have done more”. If victory in his first subsequent outing had been his way of exorcising any Ryder Cup demons, the Northern Irishman has just gone from strength to strength this year. “I had a really rough Ryder Cup … I was outside the top-10 in the world, it’s not a position that I’m used to being in.

Im Sung-jae, Kim Si-woo, Tom Kim and K.H. "Four guys is fantastic, in 2003 it was just me in South Africa, very difficult," Choi told reporters on Wednesday. Im and Tom Kim were among the six automatic qualifiers while Lee and Kim Si-woo were two of Immelman's captain's picks. Adding Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, a record five Asian players are represented on the International squad. "When you look at our team, what we're trying to tap into is the international team represents billions of people all over the world.
Justin Thomas on LIV's rankings gripe: 'It's their fault'
  + stars: | 2022-09-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY SportsJustin Thomas understands why LIV Golf players are fighting hard to receive world rankings points for their events, but he strongly disagrees with their stance. "I don't understand," Thomas said when asked about LIV's petition at the Presidents Cup on Tuesday. But that's their own fault for making the decision they made, and they knew very, very well going into it there's a good chance they won't have World Ranking points, and they took that risk. Billy Horschel will make his Presidents Cup debut this week on the United States team along with Thomas. "To my eye, it seems like they should get World Ranking points," he said.

Sep 21, 2022; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; The International Team poses for a team photo during a practice day for the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Quail Hollow Club. Even the American players have expressed sympathy for the challenge facing Immelman who will send a out record eight debutants into the Presidents Cup at the Quail Hollow Club. "It's never been done before, and I'm not a stats guy, but I'm going to say the percentage of it being done is very low. "We've still got to go out there and compete, and there's still a really good international team over there with a lot of up and coming players. Being installed as the favourite is not a new experience for the U.S. when it comes to the Presidents Cup, but seldom have the predictions of a runaway rout been so sweeping.
Asked on Tuesday if there ever were a PGA Tour v LIV Golf showdown would he play in it, Sam Burns did not hesitate. Horschel acknowledged the appeal of a PGA v LIV contest, but noted that the PGA Tour had nothing to gain from such an event. said Horschel, adding that a PGA Tour v LIV Golf showdown has been discussed. "So it's really a lose-lose for the PGA Tour in that situation, and LIV's got everything to gain from it." "It's a big hypothetical," said world number one Scottie Scheffler of a PGA Tour v LIV Golf faceoff.
The PGA Tour organises the Presidents Cup while LIV Golf, bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, has been busy poaching players, luring away some of golf's biggest names with staggering sums of money. South African Louis Oosthuizen, Chile's Joaquin Niemann and Mexico's Abraham Ancer are also unavailable to International captain Trevor Immelman, who has called up a record eight Presidents Cup debutants. Australian Adam Scott, playing his 10th Presidents Cup and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama his fifth are the only members of the squad to have played in more than one event. Every other Presidents Cup has gone to the United States with the exception of 2003 in South Africa that ended in a draw. "We look forward to the Presidents Cup every time.
Working as a beverage-cart driver is a popular summer job for many young women. Insider spoke with two women who have worked as beverage-cart drivers at golf courses in Texas and California. But for a bunch of my relatives, that was their summer job, and they made a lot of money doing it. So you're driving a golf cart around all summer, getting tan, talking to people, and making money. People don't think about that.
