Web3 music platforms are changing the industry, giving artists better payouts and ways to reach fans. Orin FleurimontThe importance of direct-to-consumer offerings for music artists has never been more evident. ‘El Conde’ Review: His Bite Is Worse
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( Amy Nicholson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pablo Larraín’s black-and-white horror spoof “El Conde” is founded on a ferocious sight gag: the former dictator Augusto Pinochet soaring into the night on a quest for human blood. This Pinochet, played with imperious cruelty by Jaime Vadell, was once a rebel-eating French royalist who sailed to South America in search of fresh meat. It’s a comic premise — what, is this part of the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” extended universe? Larraín’s version of the man did that, too, with just one tweak: He blends his victims into a smoothie. And Larraín has resurrected him to drag him into the light.

The bank sees the business as non-core, having sold part of its operations in 2020, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity. But a transaction may not happen soon because difficult market conditions weigh on the unit's valuation, they said. Societe Generale Equipment Finance provides equipment leasing and financing solutions to manufacturers, dealers and vendors in sectors ranging from transport to industrials. Underdogs Chile make four changes for Samoa game

TOULOUSE, France, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Chile coach Pablo Lemoine resisted the urge to make too many adjustments to the team for their Pool D Rugby World Cup match against Samoa on Saturday with four changes as they bid to bounce back from an opening defeat by Japan. Los Condores bring in Tomas Dussaillant at hooker, try a new second row pairing of Santiago Pedrero and Pablo Huete and give a start to Jose Ignacio Larenas on the left wing. The lowest ranked team at this World Cup and making their debut in the tournament, Chile notched two tries in the 42-12 loss to Japan but also suffered a pair of yellow cards and now look to the Samoa game as their best remaining chance of a win. Among the players to watch in the Chile side are full back Inaki Ayarza, a deft runner who sparked their opening score against Japan, and flyhalf Rodrigo Fernandez who finished it. The accomplished Fernandez has already caught the eye with his all-round game and will have to be at his best for Chile to beat Samoa for an unlikely first-ever win in a World Cup game.

REUTERS/Brittany Hosea-Small/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - This year's bank turmoil showed some boards and senior management failed in their most basic responsibilities and more regulatory guidance may be needed, a global watchdog said. Pablo Hernandez de Cos, chair of the Basel Committee, said on Thursday that the turmoil highlighted many shortcomings. The Basel Committee writes capital rules for banks, determining how much they need to set aside in case they get into difficulty. Most of the banks that failed during the turmoil were not subject to Basel's standards, said de Cos, who is also governor of the Bank of Spain. Basel may also consider how national regulators decide to exempt a bank with cross-border features from the committee's standards, de Cos said.

CNN —Two gold necklaces dating from around 2,500 years ago have been found by chance in northwestern Spain by a worker for a local water company. Sergio Marciandi was working in Cavandi, Asturias, on August 29 when he spotted a gold necklace among some rocks. Archaeologists are excited about what further study of the necklaces could reveal. Museo Arqueológico de Asturias“It’s really impressive,” said Arias, who added that the find could boost our understanding of the Iron Age, the period in which they were made. While other gold necklaces from the Iron Age have been found, most were discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries, when limited archaeological techniques meant much of the information about their provenance was lost, Arias explained.

Arm kicked off its roadshow in Baltimore, where influential asset manager T Rowe Price is headquartered, underscoring the fund manager's significance in big IPOs. Arm disclosed the proposed range would value it at between $48 billion and $52 billion. The valuation that Arm is chasing represents a climb-down from the $64 billion valuation at which SoftBank last month acquired the 25% stake it did not already own in the company from its $100 billion Vision Fund. Jamie Mills O’Brien, portfolio manager at British fund manager Abrdn, said he found SoftBank's valuation ask in the IPO "more palatable than initially discussed." Unlike most loss-making but high-growth tech companies that debut with lofty valuations but later plummet below list price, Arm is profitable.

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers.
