The eggs and overall nest construction closely resemble the eggs and pods of modern grasshopper species. Insect eggs are extremely rare in the fossil record, and intact egg cases are even rarer. This wasn’t just a cluster of eggs — it was a type of subterranean egg pod called an ootheca, with the eggs cradled by a protective layer that had mineralized into a stony rind. So Lee consulted a global insect egg database, containing more than 6,700 living species, to identify the eggs in the fossil pod. Rosenfeld/Getty ImagesNANTUCKET, Mass.—The Thanksgiving week deal between Israel and Hamas to secure a multiday pause in the fighting in Gaza to allow for the release of hostages, including Americans, provides President Biden with a reprieve from the pressure of Democrats urging a full cease-fire. But only a temporary one. Biden was heavily involved in the agreement that came together after weeks of tense negotiations among the U.S., Qatar and Egypt and was approved by the Israeli cabinet following long deliberations. He called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more than a dozen times, including this week, and was also personally in touch with other leaders as the talks progressed.

Because of the remarks on hostages, the traditional family lunch happened later than usual. Finally, the Bidens ended up at Nantucket’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, clapping as the town crier led the countdown and the tree was illuminated with colored lights. Leaning against metal barricades and waving banners that said “Free Palestine,” the protesters chanted: “Biden, Biden, you can’t hide. A local official urged the protesters to stop, noting that the community event was not a political one.
