CNN —The Marquesas are a beautiful, remote stretch of islands in the South Pacific. And, as of last weekend, they are also a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to data from the Institute of Statistics for French Polynesia (ISFP), 10,995 tourists visited the Marquesas in 2023. The Marquesas’ tourism industry is also managed out of Tahiti. Marquesan wood carving, dance and music form part of the islands’ heritage.

It was a precise strike that took out an office in a building and caused little damage outside of that. Months of tit-for-tat attacks between Israel and Hezbollah had largely been confined to areas near the border between Lebanon and Israel. Israel and the US blamed Hezbollah for the strike; the group denied responsibility. Israel had vowed to punish Hezbollah for the Golan strike, raising fears once again that simmering tensions could finally spiral into all-out conflict. Israel said the weekend assault in Golan had crossed a red line.

Beirut CNN —Israel says it has launched a strike in Beirut, Lebanon, targeting a Hezbollah commander that it blamed for a deadly attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. An Israeli official identified the target of the strike as Fu’ad Shukr, also known as al-Hajj Mohsin. Israel wanted to send “a very strong message” with tonight’s strike, according to a senior Israeli official, but hopes to avoid further escalation. Hezbollah denied responsibility for the strike but did say it had fired at Israeli military targets in the area. Tuesday’s attack is of a different caliber, marking the largest Israeli escalation with the powerful Lebanese militant group since October 8.

And now it wants Microsoft and the cybersecurity firm that caused the problem to compensate it for at least some of its losses. Delta has hired high-profile attorney David Boies’ law firm to seek damages from cyber security firm CrowdStrike and Microsoft for the massive service issues it suffered last week following a badly flawed software update caused problems in a key computer program. The hiring of the firm of Boies Schiller Flexner, first reported by CNBC, was confirmed to CNN by a person familiar with the decision. Delta’s costs could total between $325 million to $475 million, according to a note published Tuesday by Savanthi Syth, airline analyst for Raymond James. Boies and his firm won $290 million in 2023 from JPMorgan Chase for Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse victims.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti CNN —Security forces protecting Haiti’s leader provided covering fire as he left a hospital in Port-au-Prince after an interview with CNN, in a stark illustration of the violence that continues to plague the gang-ravaged nation. Conille initially proceeded with the interview and did not remark on the gunfire — which is not an unusual thing to hear in Port-au-Prince. No one was injured and the prime minister was safely returned to his office. In May, Conille was appointed prime minister during the government’s transition period, with the aim to eventually lead Haiti to new elections. CNN —A “biohazard” on a United Airlines flight is the latest midair incident to trigger an unplanned, early landing of a commercial plane. United Airlines says one passenger’s “medical issue” caused flight 2477 to land in Virginia, where the plane had to be “deep cleaned.” FlightAware shows the flight departing Houston on Sunday morning, then diverting to Washington Dulles International Airport about two hours into the trip. Audio posted on X by Thenewarea51 captured a flight crew member describing a “biohazard” on board the flight. Earlier this month, a Delta flight diverted to New York when spoiled food made passengers sick. In April, a United flight had to return to San Francisco when a toilet began overflowing.

Airports and airlines say they can handle both. U.S. airlines expect to transport 271 million passengers worldwide this summer, up 6.3% from last season, the Airlines for America trade group has projected. During extreme heat, the airport urges employees to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and, if they’re working outdoors, to cool off inside every hour. “Passengers are also encouraged to use the airport’s water stations to stay hydrated in the Arizona heat,” he added.

An American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft approaches San Diego International Airport for a landing from Phoenix on June 28, 2024 in San Diego, California. American Airlines is forecasting a drop in unit revenue of as much as 4.5% for the third quarter as high demand failed to make up for an industry-wide glut of flights that have forced airlines to slash fares. The carrier's profit fell 46% during the second quarter even though revenues rose. The carrier has been grappling with an industry-wide oversupply of flights and a direct-to-consumer sales strategy it adopted that backfired. It said in an earnings release Thursday that it has "taken swift and aggressive action to reorient its sales and distribution strategy" after complaints from travel agents and customers.

A CrowdStrike software update that crashed computers globally last week hitting services from aviation to banking and healthcare was caused by a bug in the U.S. cybersecurity firm's quality control mechanism, the company said on Wednesday. "Due to a bug in the Content Validator, one of the two Template Instances passed validation despite containing problematic content data," CrowdStrike said in a statement, referring to the failure of an internal quality control mechanism that allowed the problematic data to slip through the company's own safety checks. CrowdStrike did not say what that content data was, nor why it was problematic. CrowdStrike said it had added a "new check" to its quality control process in a bid to prevent the issue from occurring again. Wednesday's statement was in line with a widely held assessment from cybersecurity experts that something in CrowdStrike's quality control process had gone badly wrong.

Delta Airlines passengers line up for agent assistance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on July 22, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation Consumer Protection is investigating Delta Air Lines over chaos sparked by last week's global IT outage, according to a statement. The DOT cited widespread flight disruptions and customer service failures in which Delta did not uphold commitments to its passengers, it said. On Tuesday, 12% of Delta flights were canceled and 13% were delayed as of mid-morning, according to FlightAware, with some passengers still stranded in airports even days after the outage. The DOT penalized the airline $140 million, a sum 30 times larger than any previous consumer protection violations penalty from the department.

Tolls have long been the curse of rental car drivers, who often find their final bills inflated by per-day charges for access to automated toll payment devices provided by rental car companies. Now one toll authority in Florida aims to eliminate rental car sticker shock. The program — which the toll authority says is the first of its kind in the nation — aims to ensure that a traveler’s last memory of a trip to Orlando is not being gouged by fees for a rental car transponder. Usage fees often go to third-party contractors that handle toll payments for rental car companies. “Our governing board is made up of local elected officials and they were getting calls and emails.
