SMALL WORLDS, by Caleb Azumah NelsonCaleb Azumah Nelson’s debut novel, “Open Water” (2021), was rightly praised for its poetic take on young Black love in contemporary England. It also refreshed this weary reader by bucking the trend among young writers for affectless prose reflecting a passive narrator. Azumah Nelson’s second novel, “Small Worlds,” is longer, looser and less successful. The narrator, Stephen, a young Black Englishman whose parents came to London from Ghana, is not passive, but not exactly an action man either. There’s a languid quality to his life as he ambles around Peckham, a South London neighborhood that was once down at heel and is now up-and-coming.

Fast-forward to the upcoming Women’s World Cup, which starts on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand, and a host of the game’s best players will also be absent because of an injury which appears to be endemic in the women’s game. But why are so many female soccer players suffering from the same injury? “At elite clubs in the men’s game, players have access to exceptional academies and training facilities from a very young age. Beth Mead starred for England in its Euro 2022 victory but will be missing the Women's World Cup. According to the findings, 34% of women players reported discomfort specifically in their heel and the majority use specialized insoles.

Lowe will leave on Sept. 17, marking the end of his 43-year career at the bank. The decision comes as Lowe is due to accompany Chalmers to a Group of 20 meeting in India next week. "Michele Bullock will become the first woman to ever lead the Reserve Bank in this country." His two predecessors, again both career central bankers, were reappointed to second terms and each served 10 years in total. "The Reserve Bank is in very good hands as it deals with the current inflation challenge and implementing the recommendations of the Review of the RBA," Lowe said in a statement on Friday.

SYDNEY, July 14 (Reuters) - Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Friday said he would not reappoint the country's central bank chief to another term, instead replacing him with his deputy Michele Bullock. Chalmers and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Philip Lowe would leave the bank after finishing his current seven-year term on Sept. 17, marking the end of his 43-year career. "Michele Bullock will become the first woman to ever lead the Reserve Bank in this country." The central bank has since lifted rates 12 times to a decade-high of 4.1%, adding hundreds of dollars to monthly mortgage repayments at a time when a cost of living crisis is already stretching household budgets. His two predecessors, again both career central bankers, were reappointed to second terms and each served 10 years in total.

Opinion | A Climate Hawk’s Issues With Electric Vehicles
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I get why the Biden administration is pushing electric vehicles so hard. To stop the planet from overheating, we’ll eventually need motor vehicles to produce zero greenhouse gas emissions, and only fully electric vehicles can do that. Hybrids, which have combustion engines along with electric motors, will always puff some carbon dioxide (and other bad stuff) out of their tailpipes. By Toyota’s calculation, the amount of rocks needed for one long-range electric vehicle would be enough for either six plug-in hybrids or 90 of the type of hybrid that can’t be plugged in for a recharge. “The overall carbon reduction of those 90 hybrids over their lifetimes is 37 times as much as a single battery electric vehicle,” Toyota argues.

There's a big problem with Shopify's calculator for the true cost of meetings. Shopify's COO says the salary indicator on each meeting just reflects the average salary for the role. That means the meeting's cost won't be accurate in the first place: It's just an estimate. And Shopify has swooped in with what it says is a solution: airing the cost of meetings to scare bosses into scheduling fewer of them. If there's an hour-long meeting, everyone's hourly salary will be factored into a Google calendar invite.

RBA's Lowe says it remains to be seen if more tightening needed
  + stars: | 2023-07-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Speaking in Brisbane, Lowe said there has been a "significant and rapid" tightening and the rate-setting policy board is very conscious that policy operates with a lag, with the full effects yet to be felt. "It takes time for households and businesses to adjust their spending and investment plans, and there are still significant resets of low fixed-rate loans to come," said Lowe. Markets expect that the central bank may have to hike two more times to tame inflation. "Whether or not this (further tightening) is required will depend on how the economy and inflation evolve," Lowe said. From 2024, the RBA will meet eight times a year, compared with 11 times currently, with meetings set to last longer than currently, Lowe said.

Clothing repairs are favored by sustainability advocates, but they can be expensive. Beginning in October, the country's government will give a 7 euros, or about $7.79, discount for heel repairs and between €10 and €25 for clothing repairs, Le Monde first reported. Sustainability advocates favor clothing repairs as one way to slow the climate crisis and create a circular economy, in which we reuse existing resources and reduce waste. The organization found that the repairs can be expensive — stains cost an average of $17.34 to remove and other repairs cost up to $34. In April, the government doubled-down on discounts for citizens who repaired their home appliances instead of throwing them away.

Wolfgang Kaehler | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesIndia is poised to become the world's second-largest economy by 2075, leapfrogging not just Japan and Germany, but the U.S. too, says Goldman Sachs. "Over the next two decades, the dependency ratio of India will be one of the lowest among regional economies," said Goldman Sachs Research's India economist, Santanu Sengupta. Sengupta added that the key to drawing out the potential of India's rapidly growing population is to boost the participation of its labor force. The Achilles heel to the bank's projection is the labor force participation rate — and whether it increases at the rate which Goldman projects. "The labor force participation rate in India has declined over the last 15 years," the report noted, underlining that women's participation rate in the labor force is "significantly lower" than men's.

I AM just crazy about Milan’s Pirelli Tower. The stylish but severe 1950s skyscraper, once headquarters of the Italian tire company, was the brainchild of Giovanni “Gio” Ponti (1891–1979), the colossus of 20th-century Milanese design. A polymath architect-designer whose output ranged from ocean liners to cutlery sets, Ponti went on to complement this high-modernist office building, still his best-known work, with a late, imaginative masterpiece—1970’s La Concattedrale Gran Madre di Dio, a church in Taranto, a remote harbor town in Puglia in the heel of Italy’s boot.

"Given the events, their relationship with the Syrian defence ministry is now over." Mali authorities did not respond to a request for comment on the flights and whether any Wagner fighters had been redeployed from Syria to Mali. Wagner fighters secured Syrian oilfields and Western officials say Wagner is linked to Evro Polis, a company that profits from those assets. Reuters was unable to determine the fate of those commercial interests in the wake of the Russian defence ministry's moves against Wagner in Syria and Russia. The greenback was down 0.18% at 1104 GMT to 144.44 yen , after rising 0.27% on Monday. However, the yen remained close to last week's almost eight-month low of 145.07 per dollar, which prompted Japan's Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki to warn against excessive yen selling. Market activity was relatively subdued with U.S. markets closed for the July 4 public holiday. SYDNEY, July 4 (Reuters) - Australia's central bank on Tuesday held interest rates steady saying it wanted more time to assess the impact of past hikes, but reiterated its warning that further tightening might be needed to bring inflation to heel. Reuters GraphicsIn Tuesday's policy statement, RBA Governor Philip Lowe said that higher interest rates are working to establish a more sustainable balance between supply and demand in the economy. "In light of this and the uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook, the Board decided to hold interest rates steady this month." Global policymakers are still grappling with relatively high inflation despite sweeping rate increases for more than a year. Both the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank are almost certain to hike by a quarter-point this month, which could pressure an already soft Australian dollar.

June 30 (Reuters) - Artificial intelligence chips from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) are about 80% as fast as those from Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), with a future path to matching their performance, according a Friday report by an AI software firm. Nvidia dominates the market for the powerful chips that are used to create ChatGPT and other AI services that have swept through the technology industry in recent months. That prompted MosaicML, an AI startup acquired for $1.3 billion earlier this week, to conduct a test comparing between AI chips from AMD and Nvidia. Tang said that MosaicML used its tools, the PyTorch and AMD software to train a large language model without having to make any changes to its code base. If developers can find AMD's chips at the right price, "you can already switch to these today they're essentially interchangeable" with Nvidia chips, Tang said.

How Short Is Too Short for Men’s Pants?

I’ve been recently experimenting with shorter pants, something I can wear with a blazer, or simply a T-shirt or a sweater. I want to stay away from Capri pants/clown pants territory. — Pavel, AthensThe male ankle! Once a subject of derision popularly mocked as “flood pants,” shorter male pants became a thing again when Mr. Browne introduced them back in 2001, in part as a reaction to the big, billowing suits of the 1990s (see Michael Jordan). Mr. Browne shrank the silhouette, narrowing the pants and slimming and shortening the jacket, making it seem like the hipster version of the 1950s company man crossed with Buster Brown.
