Co-hostsThis year will be the first time the Women’s World Cup will be hosted by two federations, New Zealand and Australia. But this year’s event will mirror the format used in the men’s World Cup for the first time. New Zealand's Eden Park will host the opening game of the Women's World Cup. “The future is women – and thanks to the fans for supporting what will be the greatest FIFA Women’s World Cup ever,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino told reporters last month. Zambia is one of the teams making its debut at the Women's World Cup this year.

At least two people were killed and several others injured after a gunman stormed a building under construction with a shotgun in the New Zealand city of Auckland early Thursday, hours before the first soccer match of the Women’s World Cup was scheduled to begin in the city. The gunman was also killed, the police said in a post on Twitter. Armed police officers and vehicles swarmed the area, and the authorities shut down parts of the city. The episode occurred as teams from New Zealand and Norway were set to play at Eden Park Stadium, about three miles from the site of the shooting. Several World Cup teams and many fans are staying in Auckland’s central business district, and the shooting occurred very close to Norway’s team hotel and near a fan festival set up for the tournament.

Host city Auckland prepares for World Cup spotlight

AUCKLAND, July 19 (Reuters) - Excitement was building across Auckland as the city prepared to kick off the Women's World Cup on Wednesday, the culmination of years of effort to bring the largest ever standalone women's sporting event to its shores. Auckland will host nine matches at Eden Park across the tournament, including one semi-final. While Australia's Matildas are genuine title contenders, the Football Ferns have never won a match at a Women's World Cup. With digital billboards popping up around Auckland featuring the women's home team, Chance said she is already seeing signs of change. The ninth Women's World Cup runs until Aug. 20 when the final takes place in Sydney.

MELBOURNE, July 18 (Reuters) - Bigger, bolder and breaking new ground, the Women's World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand on Thursday with the United States bidding to extend their golden era by winning an unprecedented third straight title. Four years on from dominating in France, the top-ranked Americans remain favourites to secure a record-extending fifth World Cup triumph with a new generation of players. However, the landscape has changed irrevocably through the World Cup cycle, with money, talent and professionalism shifting to the sport's traditional European heartlands. Olympic champions Canada, who upset the U.S. in the Tokyo Games semi-finals, also cannot be discounted as they look to give 40-year-old Christine Sinclair a first title at her sixth World Cup. Other players say the money is not nearly enough, given the $440 million prize pool for the men's World Cup.

Opinion | The Nature of Joy
  + stars: | 2023-06-26 | by ( Margaret Renkl | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Joy is not a given in the natural world. The baby rabbit I watched cavorting in the pollinator garden was almost certainly born in the nest next to our backyard brush pile. I have seen no other survivor from that litter, and their mother is still the lone adult rabbit in the yard. I think the ever-present threat my wild neighbors live with must tell us something about the nature of joy. Follow The New York Times Opinion section on Facebook, Twitter (@NYTopinion) and Instagram.

June 22 (Reuters) - Midfielder Annalie Longo is in a race to recover from a serious knee injury and make New Zealand's Women's World Cup squad, but will gladly endure pain to play in front of home fans if selectors back her. The 31-year-old tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial ligaments in her left knee against Mexico last September but has returned to training with Jitka Klimkova's Football Ferns to push for a fourth World Cup appearance. "For me it's kind of a do-or-die, risk-reward thing," she told Reuters from training. "I think just the nature of the time-frame there is going to be a bit of uncomfortable pain in the knee but it's all to play at a home World Cup. Drawn in Group A, New Zealand will also play Philippines and Switzerland in the preliminaries, looking for their first ever win at a World Cup and to fulfil their goal of making the knock-out phase.

Unless, that is, you recognize this opening as a summary of “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel about the innocence of the mountebank and his martyrdom at the hands of the wealthy married couple he tries to come between. This reversal is part of what makes “Gatsby” such an essential American text. In “Gatsby,” money is clearly corrupting once you have it, because the having imbues you with the “vast carelessness” of Tom and Daisy Buchanan or the cold-eyed manipulative spirit of the men who use Gatsby as their front. “If he’d of lived he’d of been a great man,” Gatsby’s father says before the funeral. But in dying young, Gatsby achieved the secret goal of all Americans: to get rich while remaining citizens of Eden, innocents till the last.

Sodexo, which is benefiting from the cost-of-living crisis as employers look for ways to support staff without hiking wages, announced in April a plan to spin off and list its voucher unit on the stock exchange in 2024, betting on the good performance of the business. Smaller French rival Edenred (EDEN.PA), which joined France's blue-chip index CAC 40 (.FCHI) on Monday, posted in April first-quarter operating revenue growth as employers used its meal tickets and fuel cards to help staff cope with inflation. Pluxee, which employs 5,000 in 31 countries, targets full-year organic revenue growth of close to 20% and an underlying operating profit margin of around 32%. The first, CALLING THE MOON: 16 Period Stories From BIPOC Authors (Candlewick, 368 pp., $22.99, ages 10 and up), is an anthology of short stories and prose poems. The title “Calling the Moon” is a reference to menstruation, which usually happens once a month and which some of the anthology’s characters call a moon or luna. Many of the young characters are quick-thinking, improvising ways to handle an unexpected emergence of blood, including the wadding up of pieces of toilet paper as a method of absorption. But I blanched at her use of the word “menstruators” to encompass people who have periods but don’t identify as female. I have to think that we can come up with something else, maybe simply “people who have periods.”

The amfAR Gala in Cannes, France, may be the only social event to rival the Met Gala. Held at the sprawling Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc during the Cannes Film Festival, the event raises money for AIDS research. So many models and actors showed up that the red carpet (this one was actually blue) lasted for more than three hours. Orlando Bloom was spotted in the bathroom line (yes, even celebrities have to wait in line). Lucien Laviscount (Alfie in “Emily in Paris”) showed up at his table after starters, accompanied by the actor Aidan Walsh, a close friend .

Read Your Way Through Los Angeles
  + stars: | 2023-05-17 | by ( Héctor Tobar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Outsiders often think of Los Angeles as an anti-intellectual place, all Hollywood glitz and no substance, but writers have always been drawn to my hometown. In David L. Ulin’s “Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology,” I read about Simone de Beauvoir’s 1947 journey to L.A.’s Eastside, where she learned about the city’s anti-Mexican prejudice and admired Dia de los Muertos skulls. It’s no accident that two very different, canonical works of L.A. literature climax with riots, even though they were written more than a half century apart: Nathanael West’s 1939 novel “The Day of the Locust,” and Anna Deavere Smith’s play “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992.”Is there a book, or a writer, who captures the essence of Los Angeles? With her iconic 1960s and ‘70s essays about Los Angeles and the West, in collections such as “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” Didion helped invent New Journalism.

Dowe said negotiations fell apart when Bowlero countered the EEOC's $60 million settlement proposal with a proposal of $500,000.
