New York CNN —Kohl’s announced its CEO Tom Kingsbury will step down on January 15, 2025, and will be replaced by the CEO of arts and crafts retailer Michaels. Ashley Buchanan, the next Kohl’s CEO, has been CEO of Michaels since 2020 and was a senior executive at Walmart and Walmart-owned Sam’s Club for 13 years. He took over after former Kohl’s chief executive Michelle Gass announced she was leaving the company to become the CEO at Levi’s (LEVI). Kingsbury will stay on as an advisor to Buchanan and on the Kohl’s Board of Directors until he retires in May 2025. Shares of Kohl’s dropped 5% in after-hours trading Monday.

And his administration may also be forced to choose whether to pursue other changes, such as how the abortion drug mifepristone is regulated. “Back in April, President Trump made clear that he thinks abortion policy should be left to the states,” Kniffin said. If the Trump administration seeks to undo those and other agency measures, it could make those lawsuits moot. He says he won’t sign a federal bill on abortion,” said one prominent anti-abortion activist, who asked for anonymity to speak candidly.

Gabbard and another contentious Trump pick — Pete Hegseth, who has been tapped to lead the Defense Department — came under sharpened scrutiny Sunday as the spotlight shifted from Matt Gaetz, Trump’s toppled choice to be attorney general. Trump’s pick of Hegseth is also facing uncertainty after the release last week of a 2017 police report detailing an alleged sexual assault in California. Cassava Sciences, a small biotechnology company based in Austin, Texas, announced it would stop the advanced clinical trial for an experimental Alzheimer’s drug, ending a long-contested bid for regulatory approval. The company announced on Monday that the drug, simufilam, did not significantly reduce cognitive decline in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease in the trial, which enrolled more than 1,900 patients. “The results are disappointing for patients and their families who are living with this disease and physicians who have been looking for novel treatment options,” the company’s chief executive, Richard J. Barry, said in a statement. These results were unsurprising to many dementia researchers, who had questioned why the trial had been allowed to proceed in the first place, since much of the drug’s underlying science had been called into question.

Many families have been effectively cutting a second rent check to send their kids to day care, according to new data from the Department of Labor. On average, families spent anywhere from $6,552 to as much as $15,600 on full-day care per child in 2022, the latest year with available data. While incomes also range widely throughout the country, households typically funnel between about 9% and 16% of their annual income on day care per child. But while child care costs help explain Americans’ economic dissatisfaction, an NBC News analysis of the Labor Department and election result data also hints at the limits of the issue politically. The most forbidding child care markets in 2022 voted two years later for Trump by higher margins than the nation overall, but so did many of the areas where child care was more affordable.

Some of the nation’s leading civil rights groups told NBC News that they are gearing up for a flood of legal battles to protect the protesters. Under Rubinstein, America First Legal has in the past year filed four lawsuits that provide a glimpse into how the Trump administration could differ from its predecessor. America First Legal alleges in the suits that the State Department, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education have protected pro-Hamas extremists. Rubinstein in an interview brought up an additional law he expects a second Trump administration could enforce. The Knight Institute said although it expects the new Trump administration to aggressively police speech, it is prepared to fight back.

The Philippines’ security council will verify an alleged assassination threat by Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., a top official said on Sunday, describing it as a “matter of national security”. National Security Adviser Eduardo Ano said the government considers all threats to the president as “serious”, vowing to closely work with law enforcement and intelligence communities to investigate the threat and possible perpetrators. “Any and all threats against the life of the president shall be validated and considered a matter of national security,” Ano said in a statement. So why did so many decent, caring people vote for a man riddled with so many personal flaws? Why were they inspired by his “fight, fight, fight” war cry? Disadvantaged because their material situation has lost ground compared with those they believe claim to be their betters. Nearly all Donald Trump’s cabinet picks come loaded with gasoline and matches, to follow the will of the arsonist in chief.
