Sydney, Australia CNN —A long, emotional day for Australian soccer fans turned into an even longer trip home when severe delays stranded thousands on train platforms at Stadium Australia after the nation’s disappointing 3-1 loss to England in the World Cup semifinal. After the match, a downcast Sam Kerr – Australia’s talismanic superstar and captain – told reporters she was lost for words. I can’t blame it all on myself, but it’s hard not to feel bad right now,” she said. “I think they played incredibly,” Skye Marshall told CNN, as she stood outside Stadium Australia with her family after the match. The day before, the Matildas will look to salve the pain somewhat and take on Sweden for third place.

During another busy week of earnings and stock market swings, we picked our spots and made six trades, including calling up a Bullpen name. We also changed two Club price targets. Shortly after the opening bell, we trimmed some Caterpillar and booked some profits after the industrial giant's blowout earnings last week. Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust — the holdings we use for the Club — owns 315 shares of Caterpillar. As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade.

In a jam-packed week of earnings, the Club executed multiple trades and elevated price targets for some of our biggest stocks. Following AMD's better-than-feared Q2 release late Tuesday, we raised our price target on the stock to $135 per share from $120. Wednesday On this relatively calm day, we reiterated our 1 rating and $110 price target on shares of Emerson Electric (EMR). Against this bullish backdrop, we raised our price target on Amazon to $160 per share, up from $140. Our previous price target was $185.

Emerson also saw better-than-expected profit margin performance and robust cash flow. Topping it all off, management raised their earnings outlook and sales growth forecast to ranges above what analysts had been expecting. As for cash flow, management offered up a slight increase to their full-year forecast, at the midpoint. Operating cash flow is now expected to be in the range of $2.5 billion to $2.6 billion (versus $2.63 billion expected) while free cash flow is expected to come in between $2.2 billion and $2.3 billion (versus $2.21 billion expected). This compares to prior operating cash flow and free cash flow targets of about $2.5 billion and roughly $2.2 billion, respectively.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index has gained 3.2% this month, outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. The Dow’s gains suggest that investors are starting to buy more economically sensitive stocks as recent data show inflation slowing. That, in turn, indicates they’re becoming increasingly optimistic that the economy could avoid a recession. Conventional Wall Street wisdom says gains in the blue-chip index tend to precede rallies across the broader market. The Dow Jones Transport Average Index, an index of 20 stocks including railroad, trucker, airline and freight companies, has gained 24% this year.

On Wednesday, the GOP position on Hunter Biden received vindication from US District Judge Maryellen Noreika, who rejected an “unusual” plea bargain the Department of Justice had offered him. Noreika had been asked to approve to a plea deal that would have spared the president’s son prison. Hunter Biden is one reason Trump is able to survive, even thrive, under circumstances that would have felled almost any other candidate. But the voters who will decide the next GOP presidential nominee are not wrong in thinking that something about Hunter Biden’s treatment doesn’t sit right. Republican voters believe Hunter Biden is getting off with a slap on the wrist while their favored candidate is the one being hunted.

"The strike is not something we wanted," said Sarandos, whose company is negotiating jointly with competing movie studios like Disney and Paramount whose parent companies also own streaming services. Some big-media companies that own streaming services, like Paramount and Disney, have seen their shares drop even in the renewed bull market of the past year. LightShed Partners analyst Rich Greenfield says Netflix made $6.5 billion last year excluding interest, taxes, and non-cash charges, while rival streaming services at Paramount, Disney and NBC lost more than $8 billion. That's a relatively small number for an industry with revenues topping $70 billion, $31.6 billion of it last year at Netflix. Paramount Global's Paramount+ service lost $1.8 billion last year, but saw losses shrink in the first quarter.

All of this turmoil will be on investors' minds as the media industry kicks off its earnings season this week, with Netflix up first on Wednesday. Netflix, with a new advertising model and push to stop password sharing, looks the best positioned compared with legacy media giants. At the top of the list is contending with Disney's TV networks, as that part of the business appears to be in a worse state than Iger had imagined. The labor fight blew up just as the industry has moved away from streaming growth at all costs. Last week's ruling from a federal judge that Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of game publisher Activision Blizzard should move forward serves as a rare piece of good news for the media industry.

Hollywood actors are officially headed to the picket line. Unable to reach a deal with producers, members of The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists will join up with more than 11,000 already striking film and television writers starting at midnight. The failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers means film and television productions featuring actors will immediately halt, essentially shutting down Hollywood. "We are the victims here," said Fran Drescher, president of the actors union, during a press conference Thursday. During the strike actors will not be permitted to promote past projects through conventions, interviews or panels.

Firefighters and other responders had been working to suppress the fire since Wednesday night, pumping water from Newark Bay onto the towering ship and its load of 1,200 vehicles. The persistence of the fire led to speculation that some of the cars on board were electric vehicles with lithium ion batteries. But Beth Rooney, the port director, said that the ship’s manifest indicated that there were no electric vehicles on it. She said that the ship had carried new electric vehicles to Baltimore before arriving in Newark, where it took on a load of “previously owned vehicles” bound for West Africa. Two Newark firefighters, Augusto Acabou, 45, and Wayne Brooks Jr., 49, died trying to knock the blaze down.

CNN —Mass shootings, like the ones that occurred Monday in Philadelphia and Fort Worth, Texas – and over the weekend in Baltimore — are not uncommon around the Fourth of July. The holiday has accounted for the most mass shootings of any other days of the year in nearly a decade, according to a CNN analysis of the Gun Violence Archive’s mass shooting data since 2014. So far, there have been at least 10 mass shootings on July 4 and 5, according to GVA. Summer days overall have higher numbers of mass shootings than other times of the year, according to CNN’s analysis. Of the top 10 calendar days with the highest number of mass shootings since 2014, all but one — New Year’s Day — was in June, July or August.

A warning from UnitedHealth Group executives Wednesday that demand for medical services was rising sent insurance stocks tumbling and, in turn, hit investors who bet on health care. The biggest health-care exchange-traded fund, the $41 billion Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) , lost 1% Wednesday. The $17 billion Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also fell about 1%. Amazon shares deepened losses after a Wall Street Journal report said the online retailer and video streamer is planning an advertising-supported tier for its Prime Video streaming service and that it is in talks with Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount about including ad-based tiers of their streaming services through Amazon Prime Video Channels. Forrest said the move would suggest that "the Prime service isn't enough" to keep customers. Along with streaming video, Prime subscriptions also include free shipping for eligible products, which helps boost Amazon's online sales. For anyone who has dropped the Prime service, Forrest said they would "buy from somewhere else because nobody wants to pay for shipping and pretty much everybody is offering free shipping now." The S&P's consumer discretionary sector, which includes Amazon, was down 0.9%.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, will take questions from New Hampshire Republicans and undeclared voters in a CNN town hall Wednesday as myriad legal issues loom over his 2024 White House bid. New Hampshire, home to the first-in-the-nation GOP primary, is also home to many swing voters. That’s a view many GOP voters share, according to recent surveys. Ron DeSantis, has not yet officially launched a bid – Trump has maintained a healthy lead in early GOP primary polling. Wednesday’s live town hall audience will be made up of Republicans and undeclared voters who plan to vote in the GOP primary.
The Georgia investigation could potentially result in another state-level criminal indictment of Mr. Trump, following his indictment in New York in early April. Ms. Willis indicated late last month that any indictments, initially anticipated in May, would not come until mid-July at the earliest. Ms. Willis also said at the time that Ms. Debrow was representing people who were making accusations against another one of her clients, amounting to an untenable conflict. He was, for a time, Ms. Debrow and Ms. Pierson’s client, but is now represented by Ms. Pierson and another lawyer. Both Ms. Pierson and Ms. Debrow have been paid by the state Republican Party.
PHOENIX — Rebecca Sutton has no love for her patch of “the Zone,” a sprawling homeless camp on the edge of downtown Phoenix. There are overdoses and shootings, the sidewalk where she sleeps reeks of urine, and someone once burned down her tent. But now, moving day was looming, and Ms. Sutton did not know where else to go. In March, a judge declared the Zone a “public nuisance” and ordered Phoenix to clear out the area by mid-July. The city is planning to do so block by block, carrying out what it calls an “enhanced cleaning,” starting with Ms. Sutton’s corner at Ninth Avenue and Washington.
