The hedge fund responded by choosing to invest heavily in semiconductors manufactured in regions not affected by the war. "Our interests are aligned with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in ensuring consumer protection and product safety, and we will cooperate fully with any investigation," the Temu spokesperson said. CPSC officials have asked for more funding to hire staffers to monitor emerging e-commerce platforms such as Temu and Shein over safety practices, according to The Information. Last April, a congressional commission released a report detailing issues with Shein, Temu and other "Chinese 'fast fashion' platforms.'" They alleged the sites have numerous product safety hazards, are connected to the use of forced labor and are exploiting trade loopholes, among other concerns.

Opinion | The Risks of Experimenting With the Sun
  + stars: | 2024-08-13 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Claims that solar radiation modification, or S.R.M., could control the sun’s warming effects ignore the immense risks and the reality of sudden temperature spikes if deployment is stopped. This technology could never “restore” the climate but would further destabilize an already disturbed climate system, leading to unforeseen and irreversible ecological disasters, and severely affecting current and future generations. Almost 500 leading scientists and more than 2,000 civil society organizations worldwide are calling for a solar geoengineering non-use agreement. Both African ministers and the European Parliament have called for such a mechanism, reflecting a growing consensus against these dangerous experiments. It’s alarming that the key lesson learned from the Harvard solar geoengineering research project’s failure appears to be to proceed with less transparency, denying the public’s right to know about future experiments — while ignoring a global de facto moratorium of the United Nations on all geoengineering.

Russian banks are running low on yuan, Bloomberg reported. AdvertisementAn intensifying supply crunch in the Chinese yuan has pressured Russians to embrace a costlier method of securing the needed currency, Bloomberg reported. With the yuan liquidity shortfall doubling, Russian firms have grown increasingly dependent on yuan swaps provided by the Bank of Russia, Bloomberg said, but borrowing the yuan this way comes at a higher rate. This hasn't stopped yuan swap activity from ballooning. But even before the fresh sanctions package took effect this summer, Chinese banks were already halting yuan payments with Russia over fears of Western repercussions.
