If you’ve spent time exploring the skin care side of TikTok, you know that dermatologists love to tout the benefits of vitamin C serums and creams. “All of its various benefits make it a top recommendation for most dermatologists,” said Dr. Fatima Fahs, a dermatologist in Michigan. Yet if you dig into the research on how vitamin C actually affects the skin, a different picture emerges. In one 2021 review published in The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, for instance, Dr. Fahs and her colleagues evaluated how effective various vitamin C formulations were at improving skin health. A Huge Threat to the U.S. Budget Has Receded. For decades, runaway Medicare spending was the story of the federal budget. Budget news often sounds apocalyptic, but the Medicare trend has been unexpectedly good for federal spending, saving taxpayers a huge amount relative to projections. It’s been about a decade since Brown’s research popularized the term “gray divorce” to describe this phenomenon – something that used to be a rarity, but now has become much more common. They dubbed it “the gray divorce revolution.”And it’s still going strong, both for celebrities and everyday people. Rather than “gray divorce,” Myres says she prefers the term “silver splitters,” because it also alludes to the silver lining of starting fresh, no matter how old you are. Financial difficulties after “gray divorce” are a problem Brown says she and other researchers have been studying, too. In the first couple of years after a “gray divorce,” Brown says, about 50% of people end up living alone.

In recent weeks, floods in the Northeast have led to dozens of beach closures. Heavy rainfall and flooding increase the risk that water will be contaminated with disease-causing pathogens that people can accidentally ingest while swimming. One recent study estimated that 57 million illnesses each year are the direct result of people swimming in contaminated oceans, lakes, rivers and ponds in the United States. This doesn’t mean we should all stop swimming, though — it just means that there are certain situations and warnings to look out for. “I have a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old, and we go swimming all the time,” Ms. Hlavsa said.

The main way the body sheds heat is through the evaporation of sweat, which cools the surface of the skin, Dr. Kavouras explained. This happens more easily in dry heat than in humidity, but in dry heat, sweat can evaporate so quickly that you may not notice it. “You don’t even see it and you don’t even know that you’re getting so dehydrated,” Dr. Kavouras said.
