LOS ANGELES—To win the U.S. Open, Wyndham Clark would have to topple fan favorites and a pair of the best players in the world. In a tournament that had boiled down to a four-person race entering its final day, Clark was the one with little name recognition who had quietly been playing elite golf.

Wyndham Clark of the United States reacts to his winning putt on the 18th green during the final round of the 123rd U.S. Open Championship at The Los Angeles Country Club on June 18, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. "I just felt like my mom was watching over me today," Clark said after hoisting the silver U.S. Open trophy. McIlroy played a final round that typically wins a U.S. Open — 16 pars, one bogey. "I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship." Scheffler missed too many putts early on the back nine and needed help from Clark and McIlroy that never arrived.

[1/3] Jun 18, 2023; Los Angeles, California, USA; Rory McIlroy leaves the twelfth green during the final round of the U.S. Open golf tournament at Los Angeles Country Club. "It is, but at the same time when I do finally win this next major it's going to be really, really sweet," McIlroy said after finishing one shot back of Wyndham Clark. "You don't want to wish bad on anyone, but you're really hoping for a three-putt. You're hoping to somehow get into a playoff to keep giving yourself a chance," said McIlroy, whose sole birdie of the final round came on the first hole. I obviously never give up," said McIlroy, who will get his next shot at an elusive fifth major at the July 20-23 British Open in Hoylake.

CNN —Wyndham Clark won the 2023 US Open to claim his first major title on Sunday, edging Rory McIlroy in a nail-biting finale at Los Angeles Country Club. Ross Kinnaird/Getty ImagesFor McIlroy, US Open champion in 2011, a nine year wait for a fifth major title continues. The 34-year-old has now finished inside the top-five at 10 major tournaments since winning The Open and PGA Championship in 2014. Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesUnfortunately for Clark however, up ahead McIlroy was showing the sort of final round composure befitting of his glittering résumé. Heading into the week, McIlroy had twice as many major titles as Clark had made major cuts – yet the world No.

CNN —Rickie Fowler led the US Open by two shots heading into the last hole of his third round. Scheffler started the day five shots back of halfway leader Fowler and fell out of the picture after navigating the first 16 holes in one over par. Scheffler, who secured his lone major title at the 2022 Masters, where he took a three-shot lead into the final round, said he did not feel any different being the hunter or the hunted on the Sunday of a major. It might have been fitting if someone from Holywood won this year’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. But Rory McIlroy, born in the Northern Ireland town by that name, is not having that kind of year. On Sunday, McIlroy was chasing his first major championship title in nine years, a drought that continues to shadow a luminous career that began with four major titles from 2011 to 2014. McIlroy, like almost all of the PGA Tour’s players, felt blindsided. But on Sunday, a buoyant, smiling McIlroy, 34, was again enthusiastically chasing another major title, in the final round of the 123rd U.S. Open.

Clark’s time on top ended swiftly, when he bogeyed the second hole for the second time this week. The sixth hole had unnerved players for days, a par-4 concoction with a blind tee shot and demanding terrain. Clark had managed a birdie there on Thursday, before making par on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday afternoon, seeking a slightly larger gap between himself and everyone else, Clark stood at the tee and sent his shot soaring 266 yards. The ball crashed onto the green, rolling past the cup but setting up a short putt for birdie and a two-stroke lead.

"Sort of felt somewhat stress-free out there, if you can ever call golf at a U.S. Open stress-free." This week marks the fifth time McIlroy has opened a major championship with three rounds in the 60s. "Overall, yeah, pretty pleased with how today went, and feel like I'm in a good spot heading into tomorrow," said McIlroy. While plenty confident in his ability, McIlroy admitted he was unsure what sort of boost he could take from his past major triumphs into Sunday's final round. "I'm going out there to try to execute a game plan, and I feel like over the last three days I've executed that game plan really, really well, and I just need to do that for one more day."

Fowler has not won a PGA Tour title since 2019 and sank to a career-low 185th in the rankings last September. It's been a while since I've felt this good in a tournament, let alone a major," said Fowler. "Being in the lead is nice, but it really means nothing right now," said Fowler, who also had a share of the first-round lead. From there, Fowler closed with a routine par and walked off the course having set a U.S. Open record with 18 birdies through 36 holes. Fowler was asked to describe his emotions now that he has emerged from a lengthy period of struggle.

Fowler, who also held a share of the first-round lead with Schauffele, will have his work cut out with a leaderboard that features plenty of top-tier talent. World number three McIlroy, who has gone nearly nine years since winning his fourth major title, will set off in the penultimate group alongside Schauffele two strokes off the lead. World number one Scottie Scheffler, trailing Fowler by five, and British Open champion Cameron Smith, six back, were scheduled to go off at 2:56 PT.

June 15 (Reuters) - LIV Golf plans to go through with its schedule for the remainder of the year and 2024 despite the agreement to merge with the PGA Tour, former world number one Dustin Johnson said. The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and rival Saudi-backed LIV circuit announced the shock agreement to form one unified commercial entity last week, bringing an end to a bitter fight that had split the sport. There is uncertainly about how the golf calendar will look next year under the framework of the merger, with some doubts being raised about whether the LIV Golf League team-based competition would even exist after its 2023 season. However Johnson, one of the star recruits of the breakaway circuit, said he learned from Yasir Al-Rumayyan that the circuit would continue next year. June 14 (Reuters) - World number three Rory McIlroy said he has made "big steps of progress" in his game before he begins the U.S. Open with renewed focus and tries to end a nine-year barren run in majors. "I'm certainly feeling a lot better coming into this major championship than I was going to Oak Hill. McIlroy won the U.S. Open in 2011 at Congressional Country Club, storming to victory while setting the mark for lowest 72-hole score in the tournament's history at 16-under-par 268. "I've had my ups and downs in this tournament but I've started to figure out how to handle U.S. Open conditions and tests," McIlroy said. London CNN —Swiss luxury watchmaker Omega says it has been the victim of “organized criminal activity,” alleging three of its former staff members admitted working with intermediaries to sell a fake Speedmaster watch for some $3.4 million dollars. The watch was bought by Omega itself for 3.115 million Swiss francs—25 times the auctioneer’s upper estimated price—at a Phillips auction in in Geneva in November 2021. “OMEGA and Phillips were the joint victims of organized criminal activity involving the selling of this specific watch by auction,” the statement added. “This timepiece is currently a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation that must also bring to light the seller of the watch. “The watch was bought by OMEGA for the OMEGA Museum and we understand from OMEGA that it has discovered that the watch is composed of unrelated parts from various sources, and that OMEGA employees may have been involved in assembling the watch.

June 9 (Reuters) - The PGA Tour faces a delicate balancing act in welcoming back LIV Golf players while also ensuring those who stayed loyal to the U.S.-based circuit "feel good" about their decision, PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne said.
