Citi maintained its buy rating on Nvidia but lowered its price target to $575 from $630. The bank's lowered outlook comes after the U.S. Department of Commerce announced new export restrictions Tuesday that would curb the sale of more advanced artificial intelligence chips to China. The move will restrict the export of Nvidia's A800 and H800 chips as the federal government attempts to further tighten last year's restrictions on AI chip exports. Malik lowered his full-year 2025 earnings per share by 0.3% to reflect lowered China exposure with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards. Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore lowered his target by $30 to $600 on the back of the new export controls.

Advanced Micro Devices announced Tuesday it will acquire Nod.AI, an open-source artificial intelligence software startup, to expand the chipmaker's AI software operations. Nod.AI, or Nod Labs, builds open-source technologies "for future AI systems," according to the startup, and it mainly specializes in reinforcement learning, a type of system that "learns" via trial and error. During the same period, AMD reported a revenue decline of 18% but still beat analysts' estimates for sales and profit. Prior to founding Nod in 2013, Anush Elangovan, the startup's CEO, was part of the first Chromebooks team at Google and a lead engineer at Cisco. AMD and Nod.AI did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.

Intel said it will treat its programmable chip unit as as a standalone business, with an aim to spin it out through an IPO in the next two to three years. Intel's Programmable Solutions Group will have its own balance sheet as it heads toward independence. The move also highlights the strong demand in the semiconductor industry for field programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs. Intel's FPGAs are sold under the Agilex brand. Intel doesn't break out PSG sales yet, but said in July that the unit had three record quarters in a row, offsetting a slump in server chip sales.

Shares of AMD rose almost 5% Thursday, a day after Microsoft's technology chief said the chipmaker is bolstering its position in artificial intelligence, where Nvidia dominates. For years, Microsoft has offered some AMD GPUs to its Azure cloud customers, in addition to powering some of its computers and its Xbox consoles with AMD chips. In May, AMD said Microsoft had started offering a cloud networking service to clients, drawing on the chipmaker's Pensando products. Bloomberg reported in May that AMD was working with Microsoft on a custom AI chip, but Scott declined to say if that's actually happening. Retail investor interest in artificial intelligence is cooling — but not every stock is feeling the pressure, according to Vanda Research. It also arrives amid a broader pullback among retail investors, he noted. "Retail investors' net buying of US securities remains low relative to previous years - particularly within the realm of AI stocks, which are witnessing diminishing retail interest as the initial fervor surrounding the sector wanes," Iachini said. But that resilience in the face of rapidly growing short interest can be a "cautionary flag" of a future slide in retail trader interest. Short interest in Nvidia has declined, coinciding with a jump in the stock price, Iachini said.

BEIJING, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Chinese auto chipmaker GTA Semiconductor recently completed a largely state-funded financing round worth over $1.8 billion, state-backed Securities Times reported on Wednesday, with the move described as a clear signal to the domestic chip manufacturing industry that Beijing is still willing to invest in it. With this injection of capital Shanghai-based GTA Semiconductor, one of China's largest auto chipmakers manufacturers by production, has in less than two years racked up over $2.7 billion of mostly state funds, according to the Securities Times. Reuters could not determine whether the auto chipmaker's latest fund-raising was tied to this new fund or not. GTA Semiconductor has been backed by state-owned venture capital firms like Shanghai-based Spinnotec, which first announced the $1.8 billion fund-raising round on Monday, without specifying the entities involved. The large sum GTA Semiconductor raised highlights Beijing's commitment to prop up domestic manufacturers amid an ongoing push to wean off its chipmaking capabilities from foreign dependence, according to the Securities Times.
