HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — A man visiting the Florida Everglades is recovering after being bitten by a crocodile after falling off a boat, officials said. The attack occurred Sunday afternoon at the Flamingo Marina in Everglades National Park, according to a National Park Service news release. The 68-year-old ma capsized his sailboat in the marina basin and was attempting to swim to shore with his boat when witnesses saw him go under the water, officials said. Rangers and park biologists were investigating and monitoring the suspected crocodile. A federally threatened species, crocodiles are less common than alligators in Florida although their habitats do overlap.

Coterra CEO Tom Jordan told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday how the oil and gas company deals with unpredictable commodity pricing, emphasizing the "flexibility" of its assets. The price of natural gas has been volatile over the past few months, and in February it hit its lowest level since 2020. But Jordan said Coterra is able to project stable revenue and cash flow because of its "asset quality" and "organization." Coterra announced during its most recent earnings report it would cut back its natural gas production and instead invest more heavily in oil. However, Jordan said the company is "well-positioned" and has plans in place to increase natural gas production if necessary.

Now, those arid ranch lands are offering a new moneymaking opportunity: data centers. Lancium, an energy and data center management firm setting up shop in Fort Stockton and Abilene, is one of many companies around the country betting that building data centers close to generating sites will allow them to tap into underused clean power. In the past, companies built data centers close to internet users, to better meet consumer requests, like streaming a show on Netflix or playing a video game hosted in the cloud. But the growth of artificial intelligence requires huge data centers to train the evolving large-language models, making proximity to users less necessary. But as more of these sites start to pop up across the United States, there are new questions on whether they can meet the demand while still operating sustainably.

Coterra Energy slightly missed earnings expectations on Thursday, but the oil and natural gas producer delivered where it matters most: free cash flow. This new era rewards the energy players that focus on dividends and buybacks, both of which depend on strong, consistent cash flow production. And Coterra delivered, with beats on discretionary and free cash flow. Though the discretionary cash flow guide is disappointing, the ultimate impact is mitigated by this flexibility because it allows for the most efficient use of cash. Crude oil demand is expected to grow by 1.2 million barrels per day this year, down nearly 50% from growth of 2.3 million bpd in 2023, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency. "The expansive post-pandemic growth phase in global oil demand has largely run its course," the IEA wrote in its February oil market report Thursday. Supply, meanwhile, is expected to exceed demand and grow by 1.7 million bpd this year driven primarily by higher production in the U.S., Brazil, Canada and Guyana. "Given heightened geopolitical risks and low global oil inventories, a modest surplus may help contain market volatility," the IEA said. OPEC, on the other hand, is forecasting a much tighter oil market this year, with demand growing by 2.2 million bpd, outpacing production growth of 1.2 million bpd outside the cartel.

Diamondback Energy took one of the last major, privately held operators in the Permian off the table this week when it agreed to buy Endeavor Energy Resources for $26 billion. The deal is poised to catapult Diamondback into the top tier in the Permian, the most prolific oil patch in the U.S. that stretches from western Texas into southeastern New Mexico. The top six companies in the Permian are set to own 62% of the basin's remaining oil reserves, according to Rystad Energy. “Our findings revealed how the Amazon forest system could enter a phase of self-reinforced collapse sooner than previously thought.”Previous studies had not predicted a collapse of this scale could happen in the 21st century. “The Amazon forest is a major pump of moisture into the atmosphere, contributing to circulation processes that transfer moisture across the globe,” Flores said. Douglas Magno/AFP/Getty ImagesThe authors of the study noted that water stress was a common factor in the disturbances to the Amazon. Water stress occurs when there is not enough water to meet human or ecological needs. Global warming is intensifying the effects of water stress by causing the Amazonian climate to become drier and warmer.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Texas company has reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the federal government and the state of New Mexico to address air pollution concerns in the largest oil and gas producing region in the United States. New Mexico Environment Secretary James Kenney said he's concerned about the compliance rate for companies operating in New Mexico, describing it as terrible. The civil complaint targeting Apache comes nearly a year after federal and state officials announced a similar agreement with another producer in the Permian Basin over violations. In 2022, an investigation by The Associated Press showed 533 oil and gas facilities in the region were emitting excessive amounts of methane. In all, state officials said the recent consent decrees with energy companies cover about 15% of oil and gas production in New Mexico and about 9% of the wells.

In Seattle, where I grew up in the 1950s and ’60s, it was common wisdom that in the event of nuclear war, we were No. 2 on the target list because Seattle was the home of Boeing, maker of B-52 bombers and Minuteman missiles. In school we had various drills for various catastrophes, and we had to remember which was which. “The 40-year-long East-West nuclear arms race has ended.”A year ago, after Russia invaded Ukraine and brandished the threat of using nuclear weapons, the clock was set to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has yet come to The End. The threat of nuclear weapons in Ukraine has diminished since then, but the clock remains poised at 90 seconds before zero.
