More consequential, however, was the stagnant or shrinking turnout in these cities, which — coupled with turnout growth in Republican counties across the blue wall — drove Trump’s victory. While the number of voters throughout the rest of Michigan grew by 2.6%, the number in Detroit fell by 4%. NBC News Decision DeskThe third large blue wall city is Milwaukee, which makes up about 60% of Milwaukee County’s population. Even though turnout grew slightly overall in the city, just over half of precincts (58%) experienced a turnout decrease. Comparing Milwaukee’s sluggish turnout to Dane County — which is Wisconsin’s other large Democratic county, where turnout increased by over 6% — helps to show how different demographics may explain turnout changes.

Senate Democrats who pulled off victories even as President-elect Donald Trump won their states believe the Democratic Party can learn some lessons from their races as it grapples with losing control of Washington. Democrats still lost the Senate majority despite those victories, with Republicans flipping seats in Montana, Ohio and West Virginia. Democrats acknowledged Harris faced some headwinds in running a protracted campaign after taking over the ticket in late July. And while his party lost the White House, the House and the Senate, Schumer touted the Senate victories as more evidence that the party should be focused on the economy. Sometimes Democrats may be a little too solution-oriented, and people want to, first before you get to the solutions, hear empathy.

The arrests were the first time in the investigation that federal police have mentioned a plot to kill Lula and Geraldo Alckmin, his choice as vice-president, and stage a coup to stop him returning to power. He was in possession of the plan to kill Lula, one of the sources said. Lula won the presidential election in October 2022, defeating rightist incumbent Bolsonaro, and took office in January 2023. They also planned to seize and kill a Supreme Court justice if they succeeded, police said, without naming the judge. Nebraska’s Dan Osborn is returning to work Tuesday as a steamfitter after his unsuccessful Senate run, but his political career isn’t over. Osborn, who ran as an independent, is launching a political action committee, called the Working Class Heroes Fund, to support working-class candidates of all parties. And he isn’t ruling out another run for office after his loss to GOP Sen. Deb Fischer. Osborn said his PAC will support candidates of any party, and he said he didn’t expect to have many policy litmus tests, apart from supporting campaign finance overhaul and rejecting corporate donations. His Senate campaign raised $7.9 million through mid-October, according to the latest campaign finance reports, and he said it ultimately raised more than $14 million.

U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein landed in Beirut on Tuesday for talks with officials on a truce between armed group Hezbollah and Israel, Lebanon’s state news agency said, hours after a proposal drafted by Washington won a nod from the Iran-backed group. The visit indicates progress in U.S.-led diplomacy aimed at ending a conflict which spiralled into all-out war in late September, when Israel launched a major offensive against Iran-backed Hezbollah. Hezbollah endorsed its long-time ally Berri to negotiate over a cease-fire, but both it and Israel have escalated the fight as the political efforts carried on. A diplomat familiar with the talks cautioned that details still needed to be ironed out and these could still hold up a final agreement. Khalil said Israel was trying to negotiate “under fire”, a reference to an escalation of its bombardment of Beirut and the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution Monday that would ban transgender women from using female bathrooms in the Capitol just weeks before Democratic Rep.-elect Sarah McBride of Delaware is set to become the first out transgender member of Congress. McBride, who won the race for Delaware’s lone House seat this month, slammed the measure Monday. Mace said Monday that she plans to reintroduce the measure in the next Congress, when Republicans will retain control of the House. In the days following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, some Democrats blamed their party’s position on transgender rights as contributing to Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat. Those Democratic lawmakers said the party went too far and pandered to what they called "the far left" while trying not to offend anyone.

Many drivers told BI that the gig has become less profitable recently due to increased competition. As the adoption of driverless taxis spreads across the US, ride-hailing experts told Business Insider that Uber and Lyft drivers could see their earning opportunities slowly deteriorate. Garin said that many ride-hailing drivers work part-time and don't rely on the gig as their primary source of income. The airline announced a “first-of-its-kind partnership” with Shake Shack to serve the chain’s cheeseburgers in first class on long-distance domestic flights beginning December 1 on flights out of Delta’s hub in Boston and expanding to other cities throughout 2025. For example, Alaska Airlines created a hot coffee that tastes better in the skies, while United Airlines added cold brew coffee from Illy. Delta has served a generic cheeseburger in first class over the past few years to mostly positive reviews online. And it’s not the first airline to partner with a burger chain — United Airlines once served McDonald’s Happy Meals in the 1990s. The partnership between Delta and Shake Shack marks an expansion of the airline’s relationship with celebrated chef Danny Meyer, who founded the burger brand in 2004.

The narrative from Silicon Valley is that the AI train has left the station and any smart investor had better hop on before these products become “superintelligent” and start solving all the world’s problems. Now, some of the leading language models appear to be hitting a wall, according to at least three reports last week. But if we have indeed hit a scaling wall, “it may mean that the the mega-cap technology companies have over-invested” and it’s possible that they could scale back in the near future. That’s the AI optimist/pragmatist view. For a less rosy outlook, I turned to Gary Marcus, NYU professor emeritus and outspoken critic of AI hype.

There is a need for more construction workers, as well: There were 282,000 construction jobs open as of September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Immigrant labor is really important for our ability to continue to build homes affordably,” said Tobin.
