Multiple insurance firms have balked at Trump’s attempt to finance the bond based on the value of his real estate assets. As always with Trump, there is a legal front and a political one. His claims are inaccurate but appear to be politically effective among his supporters who revile political and legal elites in Washington. Therefore, there are good reasons why James – a Democrat – may seek other legal remedies to secure the judgment. Although his case is historic, Navarro is far from the only ex-Trump associate to serve time in jail.

Pop art: Explaining it’s enduring appeal

CNN —As accidental adverts for art shows go, a giant pooch made of flowers is a crowd pleaser. Outside the Guggenheim Bilbao in northern Spain, Jeff Koons’ much-loved flower 1992 sculpture “Puppy,” shows how Pop art — that high kick of counter-intuitive artistic expression so often equated with the 1960s — never really went away. The Pop baton has been handed over numerous times in art history. The Guggenheim Museum was pivotal to the development of the movement, both in terms of its fame and its art historical importance. The show features works by many American Pop art A-listers like Roy Lichtenstein (above).

Harris was nearby in Minnesota, making what is believed to be the first visit of a sitting president or vice president to a clinic that provides abortion services. “Big crowds in Fort Pierce, Florida, for the Biden induced Witch Hunt against his political opponent, ME!,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform. The president has been barnstorming key swing states since delivering a combative State of the Union address a week ago. The vice president, the first woman in her position, spoke frankly about the medical care provided at clinics like the one she visited. “I will never do anything that will jeopardize or hurt Social Security or Medicare,” Trump told the right-wing news outlet during a sitdown at Mar-a-Lago.

CNN —Hunter Biden won’t be returning to the spotlight next week as the House Oversight Committee had hoped. The problem with the Hunter Biden investigation, though, is not its potential reliance on the word of a compromised informant. And in that sense, Hunter Biden shares something in common with an unlikely person: Trump, at least with respect to his criminal case in New York. Much like the gun charge against Hunter Biden, the tax indictment has left many former federal white-collar prosecutors like me scratching their heads. That doesn’t mean that Trump or Hunter Biden are innocent; indeed, the former has more serious cases to contend with.

Read previewA former Mar-a-Lago employee who is cooperating with federal investigators in Donald Trump's classified documents case says the charges against the former president don't constitute a "witch hunt." Butler told the outlet that he unwittingly helped Trump staffers move 10-15 boxes of sensitive records in June 2022. "I think the American people have the right to know the facts, that this is not a witch hunt," Butler said. Trump has characterized the case — as well as his myriad other legal troubles — as a politically-motivated witch hunt, and has made several ongoing efforts to have the case tossed. "This is so much bigger than me," Butler told CNN.

CNN —A new glimpse inside Donald Trump’s inner circle shows how the ex-president’s men and women often confront a fateful dilemma under huge personal pressure. Butler’s comments are important because they foretell how he might testify in the federal classified documents trial that could be hugely damaging to Trump but that is increasingly unlikely to happen before Americans vote in the fall. Why ‘Trump Employee 5’ broke his silenceIt is too early to say whether Butler’s testimony would be decisive in the federal trial in the classified documents case. Walt Nauta, a Trump personal aide, and De Oliveira, who have not broken with the ex-president, have also denied wrongdoing. Cohen will be a key witness when Trump becomes the first ex-president to go on trial over a hush money case in New York later this month.

That was happening at the same time, Butler says, that federal investigators were visiting Trump to discuss returning the classified material in the former president’s possession. ‘Hi, Brian.’ ‘Hi Mr. Trump,’ or ‘President Trump.’ And then he went in and talked to them, but I had no clue who those people were.”‘We’re all dirty. Prosecutors allege that De Oliveira lied to the FBI about whether he knew of the boxes of documents at Mar-a-Lago. Less than 30 minutes later, Butler recalled, De Oliveira received a call from Trump, who told him he would get an attorney. “You know, even the voicemail by the attorney that called me, you know, he says, “I’m representing former President Trump.’ Well, that does me no good.

A New York judge on Thursday rejected a bid by Donald Trump to delay a $83.3 million civil defamation judgment in favor of writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump had asked Manhattan federal court Judge Lewis Kaplan to pause the latest Carroll case judgment until after he rules on post-trial motions. He later posted $5.6 million in cash as collateral while he appealed the jury verdict ordering him to pay her $5 million in that case. Trump last month was ordered by a state court judge to pay a $454 million judgment in a civil business fraud lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James. But that soon could change if an appeals court declines to stay the judgment.

Enough already: It is time to unleash Dark Brandon on this soul-sucking downer of a presidential race. And the most obvious place to begin is to invite him to the State of the Union address. This is a big moment for Mr. Biden. When he steps behind the lectern, the president needs to slap on those aviators and start throwing some strategic punches. No one wants the man to start a fistfight on the House floor wearing sunglasses.

"I would expect Trump to try to act up," former White House attorney Ty Cobb, who worked under Trump, told the Times. He and his criminal defense attorneys, Susan R. CNN —Donald Trump’s leadership PAC paid out more than $2.9 million to law firms last month as his legal troubles mounted and racked up an additional $1.9 million in unpaid legal bills at the end of January, according to a filing Tuesday night with federal regulators. Save America, a political action committee seeded with money Trump raised after his 2020 loss, has been the primary vehicle for underwriting legal bills for Trump and some witnesses in the cases surrounding him. Last year alone, Save America spent more than $55 million on legal bills, accounting for nearly 85% of its spending. Trump’s political operation has directed 10% of the money it raises online from his political supporters to Save America. “It is a form of Navalny, it is a form of communism or fascism,” Trump said.

Former President Donald Trump prepares to testify during his trial in New York State Supreme Court on November 06, 2023 in New York City. The ruling from Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron is expected to be announced Friday afternoon. A judge could deliver a hammer blow to Donald Trump and his company when he issues a decision in the New York civil trial accusing the former president of years of business fraud. But Trump and the other defendants were found liable for fraud by Engoron before the trial even began. In a bombshell pre-trial ruling, Engoron granted summary judgment on James' main cause of action — that the defendants committed fraud in violation of New York law.

The ruling comes just weeks after a jury, in a defamation case brought by the writer E. Jean Carroll, ordered Mr. Trump to pay $83.3 million — also for lying. That’s on top of two previous jury findings: Mr. Trump’s company was found guilty of 17 felonies, including fraud, and an earlier Carroll civil jury ordered him to pay $5 million for sexual assault and another act of defamation. Mr. Trump is appealing all the verdicts. But even more so is the continuity between how, in the past months, Mr. Trump has practiced exactly what he’s on trial for right in front of us, in the courtrooms, in a way that once again has benefited his brand. Shortly after Engoron’s ruling hit the docket, one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, Alina Habba, said he would appeal.

“The optics are horrific,” Fulton County Judge Robert McBurney said about the fundraiser before disqualifying Willis and her staff from pursuing charges against Jones in July 2022. More recently, Willis admitted to having a “personal relationship” with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor she hired to help with Trump’s prosecution. Wade hasn’t just billed Fulton County over $650,000 under Willis’ supervision; he’s done so in irregular fashion. Combined with his personal relationship with Willis, they raise significant questions, including whether any of his outsized earnings have benefited Willis. If Willis and Wade step aside, other competent lawyers can make the case that Trump violated the law.
