Companies Tesla Inc FollowApple Inc FollowNEW YORK, April 19 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) short sellers have $2.16 billion in mark-to-market profits for April so far, but shorts remain down $5.52 billion for the year so far in mark-to-market losses, S3 Partners wrote in a research note on Wednesday ahead of the automaker's quarterly results due after the closing bell. The electric car company's shares were down about 1% on Wednesday ahead of its quarterly results. Investors are focused on margins after Tesla cut U.S. prices on its electric cars for the sixth time this year. "Recent TSLA short covering may be an indication that some short sellers think that TSLA's profit margins will stay in the 20% range, and trimmed their exposure to lock in some of April's mark-to-market profits in the anticipation of a stock price rally," S3 Partners analysts wrote in the note. 2 spot in the U.S. most-shorted list, behind Apple Inc (AAPL.O), with Tesla's short interest at $15.42 billion, and 83.65 million shares shorted.
That brings us to today's main story — economists say the official data coming out of Russia isn't painting an accurate picture of Putin's wartime economy. "These are the things that businesses deliver and consumers purchase in an economy, and they have been absorbing the impact. Our tracker shows a contraction of the Russian economy ahead of the official figures release precisely because we use high-frequency indicators from the private economy." Vehicle sales, imports, credit growth, home prices, and other measures all point to a much less robust regime since Vladimir Putin's war on Ukraine began. These four charts tell the story of how war has reshaped Russia over the last year.
How much short sellers contributed to the downward spiral reprises the debate about whether so-called shorts are market watchdogs or opportunistic investors who profit from others’ misery. In the case of the banking crisis, a review of data and interviews with short sellers and their critics show, the answer may be both. Some high profile short sellers were later celebrated as making prophetic calls about the U.S. housing market. Even so, interviews and public postings show at least some short sellers had placed bets against regional banks well before the crisis hit. SHORT POSITIONSSuch early short sellers, however, were in the small minority.
The move makes sense, given Russia's growing status as a pariah state, but it also highlights a push to unseat the dollar as a dominant force in global trade. But to strategists at the Carson Group, a scenario where the dollar isn't the world's primary reserve currency simply isn't in the cards in the near future. Are you convinced that the dollar won't lose its status as a dominant global reserve currency? Some companies in this batch of oil stocks have upsides of up to 180%, according to strategists at Bank of America. An expert from the World Gold Council pointed out that history says gold performs well in a recession.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 15: Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange during morning trading on March 15, 2023 in New York City. Short sellers were sitting on more than $7 billion in profit from the mass sell-off of bank shares by the end of March, their largest windfall since the global financial crisis in 2008, according to data firm Ortex. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and the emergency rescue of Credit Suisse by domestic rival UBS headlined a chaotic month for the global banking sector. Hedge funds shorting bank stocks were sitting on a total of $7.25 billion in unrealized gains over the course of the month, according to Ortex. "ORTEX data shows that March was the single most profitable month for short sellers in the banking sector since the 2008 financial crash," company co-founder Peter Hillerberg said Thursday.
But before we get too intergalactic, this morning we're stopping off in the commercial real estate space. In the wake of March's bank tumult, commercial real estate has frequently been noted as the next domino to fall — and one corner of the market is already showing signs of stress. A few things to remember:Higher interest rates have made it more expensive for both American households and large commercial real estate owners to buy or refinance property. Small and medium-sized banks hold 80% of US commercial real estate debt outstanding. What are the biggest risks, in your view, facing the commercial real estate market for the second quarter of 2023?
April 4 (Reuters) - Short sellers made a whopping $848 million in paper profit by betting against beleaguered First Republic Bank (FRC.N) in March, financial data company Ortex said on Tuesday, making it the most profitable short trade last month. The lender's shares slumped 88.6% in March, its worst monthly performance, as the U.S. banking crisis fueled fears that the San Francisco-based bank could also fall prey to the issues that hit Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Silvergate Capital Corp wound down operations on March 8 and days later Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank were seized by regulators amid liquidity crises, denting investor confidence in the U.S. banking sector. April 3 (Reuters) - AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC.N) shares tumbled 24% in extended trade on Monday, while its preferred shares jumped 21% after the movie theater chain said it agreed to settle litigation and proceed with converting its preferred stock into common shares. The preferred shares have lost over 70% since they were issued in August as part of a plan to pay down the company's debt. AMC said that as part of the settlement, it has agreed to pay the plaintiffs one share for every 7.5 shares they own. Shareholders voted last month in favor of increasing the total number of authorized shares and carrying out a one-for-10 reverse stock split as part of a plan to convert its preferred shares into common shares. AMC listed the preferred shares under the symbol "APE" in a nod to Reddit's wallstreetbets stock trading forum, where participants often describe themselves as apes.

Redburn research said the size of the latest cut was probably overdone unless OPEC feared a major global recession. March 31 (Reuters) - U.S. short seller Hindenburg Research said on Friday Block Inc's (SQ.N) response to its allegations confirmed it had reported inflated user counts on its Cash App to investors for years. The payments firm led by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey said on Thursday that 44 million of its more than 51 million monthly active customers on Cash App were verified through its identity program as of Dec. 31. "Block's newly reported internal estimates also show that its previously reported 51 million monthly transacting actives as of December 2022 represented a 16%-31% inflation of its actual estimated internal user counts," Hindenburg said in a note published on its website. After taking a short position in Block, Hindenburg alleged in the report that the payments firm overstated its Cash App user numbers and understated its customer acquisition costs. Short sellers typically sell borrowed securities and aim to buy these back at a lower price.
Those rate forecasts have bolstered tech names, and mega-caps like Apple and Microsoft have pulled the Nasdaq higher. "While it sounds like Twilight Zone comment to many investors, tech stocks have become the new safety trade with Big Tech names a major beneficiary of this dynamic," Ives, a managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush, wrote in a note. "And these tech stocks have been under owned and still remain in that camp in our opinion." Short sellers generated paper profit of $14 billion betting against bank stocks over the last month. Shorting bank names in March produced a "wide swath of profitable trades that returned +17.2% in less than a month," S3 Partners said.
Short sellers betting against bank stocks logged $14.3 billion in paper profit in March, said S3 Partners. Chaos around SVB, Signature Bank and Credit Suisse spurred a 11.4% rise in new short selling in global bank stocks. But short sellers are also facing a squeeze as prices in bank stocks come off lower levels hit this month. Stripping out SVB Financial Group and Signature Bank, those selling bank stocks short were down 4.5% since March 23, handing back $587 million of their profit made this month. "If this upward price trend continues in the rest of the regional banks, we should see short covering as short sellers rush to realize some of their mark-to-market profits," said Dusaniwsky.
Jeremy Grantham warned the S&P 500 could tank by up to 50% as the "everything bubble" bursts. Grantham advised against holding US stocks for now, and slammed the Fed for inflating asset bubbles. Grantham blasted the Federal Reserve for inflating asset bubbles time and again, and warned investors against holding US stocks in the short run. And yet, the Nasdaq went down 82%, Amazon went down 92%, and the S&P went down 50%. (Grantham was discussing how the the biggest asset bubbles form.)
The goal of a money market fund is to provide investors with a relatively stable investment option that offers higher returns than traditional savings. What’s happening: Since the Fed began to raise interest rates a year ago, the amount of money in money market funds has increased by roughly $400 billion. Goldman Sachs economists wrote in a note on Thursday that Americans could sell as much as $1.1 trillion in stocks this year and put that money into credit and money market assets instead. Money market funds are deeply interconnected with the wider financial system, and often face the same risks as banks. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, a US government agency that insures deposits in banks and savings associations, does not insure cash invested in money market funds.

March 23 (Reuters) - Kerrisdale Capital said on Thursday that it had built a short position in Uranium Energy Corp (UEC.A), sending the miner's shares down more than 10%. The short seller said in a report that the company had failed to exploit a spike in uranium prices during the last two bull markets. Uranium Energy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kerrisdale said that of the company's stated 140 million pounds of estimated uranium resources in the United States, none can be mined profitably at current prices. "Only about a quarter of the resources will be economically viable even at the much higher uranium prices."
Hindenburg Research on Thursday released a scathing report about Block, saying it inflated metrics. The short-seller financial research firm led by Nathan Anderson said it has taken a short position on Block shares after its two-year probe. The firm also said it ordered and "promptly received Our Donald J. Trump Visa Cash App card in the mail." It saw multiple Cash App accounts bearing the name "Jack Dorsey" as well as dozens of "Elon Musk"' and "Donald Trump'" fake accounts as well. "The only payment provider mentioned in the indictment was Cash App, which was used to facilitate the fraudulent COVID relief payments," wrote Hindenburg.

Among other highly shorted meme stocks, Koss Corp (KOSS.O) climbed 9.5%, Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY.O) reversed course to slip 1.3%, while the Roundhill MEME ETF (MEME.P) rose 4.2%. "Luckily, this go around is not due to meme investors, but an actual tangible fundamental event," said David Wagner, portfolio manager at Aptus Capital Advisors.
